The middle of the 19^th century was a period when the United States’ rifts led to civil war and where causes and ideals found expression in vigorous popular movements.  Within  this climate, a number of women achieved high profiles.  Massachusetts-born Susan Brownell Anthony was one such, and in1872 her deliberate provocation in casting an “illegal” vote created a landmark movement in the campaign for female suffrage.
