Rotarians:

In this third month of isolation, I find comfort in chatting with so many of you each week. Our next Lincoln East Rotary meeting will be next Wednesday, May 20th. We will be on-line before noon and try to start the meeting right at noon. Again, download the Zoom app and look for the ID and password in the Spoke. This meeting will fall between two military recognition dates.  May 16th is Armed Forces Day and May 25th is Memorial Day. So, our meeting will be about some of our own takes on military service. I would like each of us to talk, for about ONE MINUTE or so, about our own service, spouses service, parents, children, other relatives who have served. I know that we will be astonished by what we learn about each other and our families!

On that military recognition note - a service project! Lincoln East Rotary will again be erecting flag poles and raising flags at the Veterans Memorial Garden. We will meet there on May 22nd, at 10:00 AM to help with this. We will also meet on May 26th, at 10:00 AM to lower and fold flags and take down the flag poles. If you can help with this, ( appropriate social distance) please let Duane Tappe know,  (402-686-0310) as he will be coordinating for us.

Our Rotary Board met this week, and we are now just six weeks away from Sue Schuerman moving from President-Elect to President. She and Dick Cumming have been working hard on developing the budget for this next Rotary year. Please remember to send your 2020 - 2021 dues and membership form to Dick. (Family membership is only $125.) Also, remember that the Give to Lincoln Day is May 28th, but anytime now, you can donate to many good causes, including the Lincoln East Rotary Foundation! We have also met our goal for Polio Plus for the year and Dick has sent to Rotary International a check for $1800. If you would like to contribute further for “Happy Dollars” send him a check for that also.

Hacking a Solution to COVID

Rotarians in Lithuania and the United States promote the use of bubble helmets to help patients avoid mechanical ventilators

Rotarians in Lithuania and Chicago, Illinois, USA, are using their influence to promote the use of “bubble helmets” and potentially lessen the need for mechanical ventilators for COVID-19 patients who struggle to breathe on their own.

Bubble helmets come in various designs and are noninvasive, supplying oxygen without the need for intubation.

Al Burdick - Al has been in and out of hospitals since January, with the most recent being last Saturday night regarding a MRI for his leg pain; surgery was done Monday of this week and his leg no longer has pain; also he went home the same day, March 16th. They have moved into a ranch home, which is much easier for them. He was on our Board Meeting Zoom call this past Wednesday and doing well.

Mike Carr -- Greg called and left a voice mail and have not heard back from Mike. This is the second time in a row, so Greg needs to do some further checking. Greg will keep us updated with any changes.

Dale Lloyd -- Greg called and Dale's wife, Marilyn answered the phone and said Dale was having a rough day and asked me to call back another time. Greg will try him first of next week and update us when he is able to speak with him.

Lyle Schoen -- Greg said that Lyle was on his new list of members to call. He is doing fine and was on our Rotary Zoom meeting on Wednesday. He is anxious to get back to in person meetings.

Gene Roth - Gene spends most of his time sitting and not walking. When he tries to walk, his legs are so weak and he is unable to stand alone. His blood pressure has gotten stabilized, which is good. He uses a walker when he does walk and has someone walk with him. His son, Tom and daughter, Gina, continue to help him and Barb. Barb quit taking chemo a couple weeks ago, but is doing fairly well.

We should continue to keep all of our EMT's and first responders, hospital doctors and nurses, supermarket clerks, restaurant workers laid off or furloughed and waiting for unemployment, all those who are currently unemployed, human service organizations who still are open to serve those poor/homeless/hungry, funeral home workers, churches, airline employees, hotel employees, gas station and convenience store workers.
