District Governor's Visit - October 14, 2020
Lincoln East Rotary club welcomed our District Governor Roxy Orr to our club.  Roxy said it is nice that we can have some human connection, because some clubs cannot have a human connection, but at least can have a virtual meeting.  Roxy presented our awards that our club received during the virtual District Rotary Convention for 2019-2020.  Dennis Duckworth, past President accepted these awards on behalf of the club.

President's Message

Lincoln East Rotary Club

As part of our celebration for World Polio Day on 10/24/20, several members of the Lincoln East Rotary Club went to the home of long time member, Steve Grosserode, on the morning of 10/16/20.  Steve has been a member of our Club since 1977.  He reports that he has enjoyed his membership.  His first major position with the Club was to Chair the Polio Plus Committee the year it was established in about 1978.  He recalls that the Committee raised $22,000 by cash and pledges.  Steve has remained devoted to Polio Plus over the years.  He also served as Club President in about 1987-88.

Steve served in the U.S. Military as a Lieutenant in the South Pacific during WWII.  He received the Bronze Medal for Valor and a Purple Heart for his service there.
Club members presented Steve with a newspaper picture of him in uniform at the time of his service.  We enjoyed coffee and donuts with Steve and his wife Pat (socially distanced of course) on his patio on a lovely (though a bit cool) autumn morning.

Thank you, Steve for your service to our Country and to our Club.

CHUCK’S CORNER #27

IS THE WORLD GETTING WORSE?

I think I have asked this question previously, but I was listening to a Podcast entitled Beyond Doom-scrolling which reminded me of the subject.  The speaker was a psychologist by the name of Steven Pinker.  He points out if we look out, it appears the world is on a downhill spiral: divided nation, hostile countries, wild fires, hurricanes, hunger and a virus that won’t go away.  WOW, it looks grim.  Unless, you look at hard data.  Pinker and others have the data to contradict the dismal outlook. Throughout the world people are living longer, fewer are experiencing hunger, fewer children are dying, more folks have electricity and clean water, etc.  I will share two examples that contradict the belief this is the worst of all times.
