Lincoln East was introduced to two new members who told us a little bit about themselves and why they came to the University of Nebraska. They also told us why they wanted to belong to Rotary. Members of Lincoln East heard from a current member, Azariah Lawal about his journey from Nigeria to America. Azariah said that he attended the District Conference and asked the question – why is there so many jobs, but few applicants? Azariah said it is difficult to function here in America because someone like him, who has come from another country cannot get a job in his/her profession. Even if they are well trained in that profession, no job is available in the U.S. because they need a “green card.” You need a job before applying a green card. In Nigeria the people hard working people, very industrious and most have jobs in their professions. In Nigeria there are about 4 million people and one of the challenges this year is it is election year. At least they are not at war like Sudan. When Azariah came to America is was a challenge. He likes doing research. Our Federal and immigration laws make it very difficult to get work in their profession. Azariah is a student and most international students cannot get work. He feels that the immigration laws in America are not being fair to international students. They are too restrictive. Some one from Mexico can easily come to the U.S. and get a job. There are too many loopholes in our immigration system. One of our members has been able to help Azariah to some extent and he is glad for this person’s help. He became a member last fall in Lincoln East Rotary. He and his family feel very blessed that they did come to America. |
