A Volunteer Archeologist Shares His Experience

Lyle Schoen shared with Lincoln East Rotary Club about his experiences as a volunteer archeologist in an Ancient Roman City which was located near the Sea of Galilee.

The Roman city was Susita which is located on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee near Tiberias.  The city is connected to the other hills by a thin ridge.  Today Susita is called the Golan Heights.  Lyle shared   pictures that he had taken with us of the dig.  The area where the “dig” took place had lots of weeds and rocks which needed to be cleared.  Lyle told us that it was a long way down and a long way up when they finished their archeology dig.

Lyle actually did this on his own and filling out to get a scholarship to help with expenses and getting all the necessary paperwork in so he could volunteer and share some history of the Holy Land.

Lyle’s favorite place is the Sea of Galilee and it is understandable because it is a beautiful, and peaceful spot to visit.  Thank you, Lyle for sharing with us.
President Dennis Message
Lincoln East Rotarians:

This Sunday is Father’s Day.  May we all remember our fathers, the father figures in our lives, and our children who are fathers to our grandchildren.  They are all important guides for the future.

I want to thank Lyle Schoen on his most wonderful program last week on the archeological dig at the Sea of Galilee.  Our meeting this week will also be a Zoom meeting, where we will hear about the Lincoln-Lancaster County Emergency Management Department.

Wayne Casper has been doing a great job for us on getting us up and running on Zoom - his work is keeping us all in touch, and is much appreciated.  Minnie Stephens is also doing a wonderful job on the Spoke and getting information out to us.  Be sure to thank them both for their help during this pandemic.  It sounds like we may be able to meet again at Valentino’s.  We are not sure when this may occur, but will keep all of you advised when this will happen.  Hopefully sometime in July.

Rotary connects the world,

Dennis
Rotary Year 2020-2021 Participation
It is time for you, as members of Lincoln East Rotary Club, to start thinking about your monthly service to the Club for 2020-2021.  When we return to in-person meetings we will be needing Greeters, Assistant Sargent-in-Arms, Cashiers, and Program Chairs.  These will be done on a monthly basis.  As we are currently doing virtual/outdoor meetings, we need someone to step up for Program Chair starting in July.  If you are interested, please contact Minnie Stephens, Club Administer, at 402-466-1545 or minniemouse1041@windstream.net, or Sue Schuerman, incoming President, at 702-524-7199 or sunshine5254824@twc.com.
Rotary Foundation Support
Supporting the Rotary Foundation through your contributions, either via sending in donations, or by Rotary Direct, you are helping change lives around the world.

Did you know that the Rotary Foundation funded more than 1,400 global grants totaling over $86 million last year?  Or that, together with our partners, we've immunized more than 2.5 billion children against polio since 1988?  As we continue to make our contributions to the Rotary Foundation via check or by Rotary Direct we are "Doing Good in the World."

Our gifts are helping us address some of the most challenging needs in communities close to home and around the world.  Most recently, Rotary has been responding to the COVID-19 pandemic with members working together to provide health professionals with protective equipment, feed essential workers, and care for others affected by the coronavirus.

If you have not thought about using Rotary Direct, please contact your Rotary International Foundation Chair, and they will see that you get the proper paperwork to make a monthly contribution to the Rotary Foundation.
