President Dennis Message
Rotarians:

In my opinion, this week’s meeting on Zoom, was needed, and very much a success.  It was good to see and hear from so many of our members, and in these strange and frustrating times, comforting to hear us stumble through the Four Way Test.  We will continue with club meetings on the first and third Wednesdays of the month.  On the 13th, we will have a Zoom board meeting at 10:30, then meet, socially as a club, on a Noon to 1:00 Zoom meeting.  Look for the links in the Spoke, and Wayne and I will try to forward you the links again, next week in an e-mail.

There continue to be Rotary event changes.  In a meeting with the District Governor he indicated that the Rotary International convention will now be virtual, the District Training will be virtual, the July 25 and 26 District Annual Conference is virtual (at no cost), and the January Rotary International Assembly likely will be virtual.  As much as possible events continue, just in a new way.

In addition, the Salute to Business has been moved to April of 2021.  I also have been in contact with the Lincoln Parks and Recreation Department.  I am sad to report that they are still undecided on having summer programs, however they will NOT have the Sum Fun Picnic.  This, for all we do, is personally the most meaningful for Marcia and me, and we will miss seeing the kids.

A shout out to Wayne, Minnie, and Sue, keeping us going on these meetings and keeping us in touch with each other.  Finally, a big Thank You to Barry Stelk on his continued efforts to solicit members.  He sent us all an e-mail this week that we can all forward to friends, past speakers, co-workers, as potential members.  Please continue to reach out to others as we will continue our service to our community, and to the world.

Remember to renew your membership, we need you more than ever, Rotary Connects the World.

Special Hymn used for Prayer
On May 6, Lyle Schoen opened our virtual meeting with a poem that was written by Carolyn Winfrey Gillette.  This poem can be sung to a traditional Dutch melody entitled, There's a Wideness in God's Mercy).  The Poem is entitled, "God Whose Will is Health and Wholeness" which quite appropriate during this time with the COVID-19 virus.  You can read the poem if you click on Read More.  Thanks Lyle for sharing with us today.

Chuck's Corner #23

He is an article that Chuck's daughter,  Cynthia Erickson, talks about virtual fatigue and how you combat it.  Chuck says, "The structure of our day has changed for the most part.  Many of us aren't commuting, we're maybe not spending as much time getting ready for work.  We're just waking up and jumping in, which doesn't leave much time for ourselves."

Scientific explanation behind virtual fatigue and ways to combat it

Video conferencing is a way to stay connected to our coworkers, family and friends, but have you found you’re more exhausted after video chatting all day? There's actually a scientific explanation behind this virtual fatigue.

"We’re all a little bit stressed. What that means is our bodies are producing more cortisol. That’s the stress hormone," explained Cynthia Erickson, Metropolitan State University of Denver assistant professor of psychology.

Erickson says while we’re in these video conferences, most of us are trying to multitask.

"Instead of doing two things at once, what we’re actually doing is we’re task switching. So, we’re switching from one task to another. Every time we switch tasks, it takes a minute to get oriented, and that’s also exhausting," said Erickson.

It’s not just the work calls that are affecting us. Erickson says even the calls with our loved ones can have two consequences.

"One, they’re not the same as an interpersonal conversation where we might reach out and touch someone. But, also, they remind us of what we don’t have," said Erickson.
And by not touching our loved ones, we’re not getting as much oxytocin, or the feel-good hormone.

"For the most part, many of these things are reversible, so as long as you get a good night’s sleep, that’s something that’s reversible for many things. Some of them are temporary," said Erickson.

The structure of our day has changed for the most part. Many of us aren’t commuting, we’re maybe not spending as much time getting ready for work. We’re just waking up and jumping in, which doesn't leave much time for ourselves.

"I think it’s really important to think, ‘Okay, what can I do to get fresh air? What can I do to connect with other people? What can I do to get exercise?'," Erickson said. "But we know that we do need sunlight. We do need other people. These things are all really critical for our normal well-being."

And while we’re in the Zoom or video calls, she says to focus on one thing at a time.

"Even though it’s really tempting to multitask, because we have all these computers and all these screens, we have all this information, try to uni-task. So, instead of being a good multitasker, be a good uni-tasker," suggested Erickson.

She says the blue lights from our screens turn off the production of melatonin, or the sleep hormone, in the brain, making it more difficult to fall asleep. So, if you have to use them close to bedtime, Erickson suggests adjusting the settings to a more yellow light.
