Stories
Rita Bennett
Rita has enjoyed a 30-year career as a Nebraska public school teacher and teacher leader.  Rita taught high school Business and English for 21 years at Lincoln Southeast High School and for four years at the LPS Entrepreneurship Focus Program.  In addition, Rita worked with Lincoln Public Schools' eLearning program, first as an instructor and then serving for many years as the district's eLearning Coordinator, supporting and training other teachers and building administrators around the district.  During her final six years in LPS, Rita was elected to serve as President of the Lincoln Education Association, where she represented over 2,300 certificated educators throughout Lincoln Public Schools. In this role, she worked closely with teachers from all grade levels and maintained regular communications and coordination of programs with LPS district office personnel and with the LPS executive team.  Rita is also a product of Lincoln Public Schools and a proud graduate of Lincoln High School.  Both of her children also received their education in Lincoln Public Schools, graduating from Lincoln Southeast High School.

After completing the maximum of two terms as LEA President, Rita retired from Lincoln Public Schools.  She is now active as a member of the Board of Directors of LEA-Retired, in addition to volunteering in the ID Unit of the Lincoln Police Department where she provides fingerprinting services to citizens who are required to be fingerprinted as part of employment or other licensing or permits.  Rita is looking forward to the birth of her first grandchild in early 2023, and plans to enjoy being "grandma day care" for the little one.

Rotary Reflections
Dr. Henry A. Smith wrote down the speech given by Chief Seattle before an assemblage, which included the territorial Governor, Native Americans, and white settlers, in December, 1854 on the site of the city that would bear the tribal leaders name.  Chief Seattle accepted the U.S. governments terms for buying tribal lands and establishing reservations but spoke sadly of two distinct races with separate origins and separate destinies.  He made several statements of significant meaning in that speech.  They are worthy of our consideration.
