There will be meeting on July 1, 2020. On July 8th we will have a Board meeting at 10:30 am and our regular meeting at 11:45 am. Speaker for July 8th will be Dr. Darrin Good, President of Nebraska Wesleyan. Dr. Good's topic will be: "The Status of Wesleyan and What the Vision for Wesleyan in the Future." These meetings will be done virtually. Information will be in next week's SPOKE.
Thank you for allowing me to be the Bell Cow for the club these past 12 months. I found this year to be enjoyable, but also, so very challenging. We tried some new deviations from meeting only at Valentino’s, we implemented fifth Wednesday social time, and adjusted from face to face to on-line Zoom meetings. We set many goals and the club responded, we met almost all of our goals, and put in tremendous effort on those where we came close to reaching the goals.
I wanted to get to 50 members, by adding eight new members. We added seven, but could not get over the hump. Barry was a workhorse on this, and he put in a lot of effort, and implemented new ideas. Kudos to him for this. Of particular note is that we added members in their 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s, we added spouses, and added three women to the club. I like the direction that we are moving. We are now known as the club that supports our veterans, and thanks to Duane, we have a lot of physical proof of that, some great service projects with flag raising, and the Hands of Service Sculpture.
Minnie was a great administrator, who made sure we had programs, greeters, cashiers, and took over publishing the Spoke. Wayne needed to cut back on some of his many club duties, yet when the pandemic hit, he was the person who right away got us up and running on Zoom. A debt of gratitude to both of them for their tireless efforts!
Dick and Jerry get too little recognition for their work as treasurer and secretary of the club. Until you are in a position to work closely with them, one has no idea of the commitment it takes for them to take care of so many behind the scenes tasks. They are a blessing to have in our club and on the board. We wanted to complete 15 service projects, we went way past that in helping our community, and our world. Chris and Chuck, thank you for time and talents. We are lucky to have Gordon leading our foundation, which allows us to do so many projects, and Lillie, Dave, and Dennis handling the scholarships. Again, these are behind the scene activities that take a lot of time to complete.
Greg kept us up on the welfare of everyone, and Gene made sure our room was set up each week. I appreciate their work and dedication to these tasks! Finally, thanks to Paul as the Past President, and his advice, and to Sue, as our incoming President, who both participated in so many activities. Whatever your comfort level of involvement is, I imposed on many of you to do the little things that made my job so much easier. I thank every one of you.
So, now it is time for this Bell Cow to moooove on, best of luck to Sue, we will be there for her and for each other.
Jim Davidsaver is the Director of the Lincoln Lancaster County Emergency Management Center (EMC). The Center has a Mission which makes them responsible for facilitating the continuation of government operations in times of disaster or major emergency. It coordinates county, city, private sector and volunteer services to facilitate and enable continuity of operations countywide.
As we rapidly approach the end of this Rotary Year, I want to thank ALL of you for your support this past year. I could not have had a better year as your President, without the support of SO MANY ROTARIANS. You made this journey possible, and I appreciate so many of you pitching in to help.
I would like to thank the Rotarians who are not returning to our club in this next year. Your involvement, over the past years, has helped our club into what we are now, has helped our community with so many service projects, and helped the world in eradicating polio and providing water and nutrition to people in other continents. We will miss you, but know that we will think of you, and hope that one day, you will stop in to a meeting and say hello to us.
The flags at the Veterans Memorial Gardens will be raised prior to September 11th, which is Patriots Day. More information on time, day putting up the flags and taking them down will be forthcoming in the SPOKE. Thanks to all those who in past have helped raise and lower those flags at the Veterans Memorial Garden.
Lincoln East Rotary Club is asking for help from it's members to seek out a new venue for our meetings in case Valentino's does not let us back. Sue Schuerman, President-elect, has checked with Cornhusker Bank, they are not letting anyone use their rooms in June or July due to the virus. Andrea is looking into two rooms associated with Union College. If any of you have any ideas where we might meet, please let Sue know either by calling 1+702-524-7199 or email sunshine5254824@twc.com.
It is time for you, as members of Lincoln East Rotary Club, to start thinking about your monthly service to the Club for 2020-2021. When we return to in-person meetings we will be needing Greeters, Assistant Sargent-in-Arms, Cashiers, and Program Chairs. These will be done on a monthly basis. As we are currently doing virtual/outdoor meetings, we need someone to step up for Program Chair starting in July. We want to send our sympathy to the Gene Roth family of the passing of Barbara Roth. Her service was held on Wednesday, June 24th at 11:30 am at the North American Martyrs Church. Barbara was always there helping us with the Sum Fun Picnic and it was a joy to have her join us. She will be missed. Memorials are to Lincoln East Rotary Foundation. Mike Carr has been in and out of the hospital and has asked that we keep him in our prayers.
Barry Stelk will soon be having surgery, please keep him our prayers.
Gene Frederick has been having tests, continue to keep him in our prayers.
We should continue to keep all of our EMT's and first responders, hospital doctors and nurses, supermarket clerks, restaurant workers laid off or furloughed and waiting for unemployment, all those who are currently unemployed, human service organizations who still are open to serve those poor/homeless/hungry, funeral home workers, churches, airline employees, hotel employees, gas station and convenience store workers.
