Things our mothers taught us A few of us were visiting after Rotary on March 11 and the topic of the Coronavirus came up. One asked was it being overhyped. Although I’m not an expert, I expressed the opinion that although we shouldn’t panic, we should take it seriously and I now note that multiple events are being modified or canceled including my church service next Sunday. So the folks in Lincoln are taking it seriously to avoid more rapid spread, because if we can slow the spread, the medical system is more likely to be able to care for those most ill. Of course, our governments need to deal with the problem, but we need to do our part to protect ourselves and others. Our mothers taught us many things that if we followed their advice, we would probably be better off. First eat your vegetables, second wash your hands. With the onslaught of the Coronavirus, these admonitions are very relevant. By eating a balanced diet, we furnish our bodies with the nutrients to maintain our immune systems. By washing our hands we avoid the germs that can infect us. She also taught us to cover our mouth and nose when we coughed. She told us to go to bed at a reasonable time, because sleep is important in staying healthy. In summary, these are things we should have been doing all of our lives, but the current pandemic reminds us to listen to Mom. |
