President's Message

“It Takes a Village”

Hillary Clinton has written in one of her books that “it takes a village” to raise a child.  She is, of course, referring to the supervisory support, financial support, physical support, moral support, and love required to support a growing child.  As Rotarians know, this level of support is required for projects to help individuals and groups throughout the world to achieve their goals.  Recently, I got to see this level of support on a local and personal level.  I was walking my dogs at the dog park this past Thursday AM when I became really dizzy and short of breath (SOB).  I tried to make it back to the car but couldn’t so gave up and sank to my knees and laid down on the grass.   Sure enough, a woman I didn’t know soon came over to check on me.  She thought it was odd to see a person lying on the grass when she arrived at the dog park with her dog.  She checked me out, decided I was in trouble, and called 911.  She gave the paramedics a report on me and then she got her dog in the park so it was OK, got mine in the car with the AC so they were OK, called my Uncle and Aunt to come to the dog park to get the dogs, and stayed to help my Uncle get the dogs home and get my Uncle back to the park for his car.  She continued to check in with my Uncle and Aunt on my progress at the hospital.  Wow, she did all this not knowing if I had the corona virus or what.  It turns out that I didn’t but she took a real chance.  After a catheterization for TPA to a blood clot next to my heart in each lung, I started to recover.  My Uncle brought me home this afternoon.  My niece and my high school classmate (who is a cat person) fed my dogs while I was gone.  I’m certainly grateful for this “village” of support and couldn’t have gotten along without it just now.  Many of you have had similar experiences which help us understand the critical importance of the work of Rotary both locally and in the world.  I hope we can all continue to be a “village” of support for those in need here and abroad both personally and through our work in Rotary.
Chuck's Corner #25

Are you a good listener?

Sometime back, I discussed those individuals that are incessant talkers.  However, there is the other side to this issue, and that is do we listen to others.  I don’t mean during a talk or a lecture, but when we are in a conversation with someone.  Do we learn from other’s observations and opinions?  How attentive are we?

I have a friend who not infrequently during a conversation will say emphatically, “I didn’t know that.”   I find few folks that comment in that fashion.  It’s as if it is a sign of weakness to learn of something new from someone else.

My brother is a great conversationalist.  He’s very well read, but makes comments like “tell me more, or teach me about that.”  That makes for a good conversation, because most of us like to share our knowledge.

I like to ask people that I am meeting for the first time: Tell me Your Story, something that everyone has.

Another feature to being a good listener, is eye contact.  That is a weakness of mine, as I tend to lose eye contact, I have to remind myself to at least periodically return to looking directly at the person I am visiting with.

Here again, this is one way of adopting the 4-Way Test i.e.  “Will it build good will and better friendships”.   This is something to keep in mind when a prospective member shows up.

Let’s each of us resolve to be a good listener, at least once this week.

Chuck
