There is a lot to celebrate this month, May Day, Cinco de Mayo, Mothers’ Day, Armed Forces Day, Police Officers Day, Memorial Day. Those are the major ones, research shows so many more, like Frog Jumping Day, Hamburger Day, Beverage Day, etc. We should celebrate that the weather is warmer, we are now 3+ months into this pandemic, and it appears some progress is being made on a vaccine.
We need to celebrate together on May 6th, as our club will hold a virtual meeting via Zoom. Wayne and Sue, thanks for setting this up! Prior to the meeting time, you should download Zoom on your computer, iPad, or iPhone so you can attend. We will start around 11:45 and plan to be together for about an hour. I look forward to seeing you all next week.
A few notices, the Wheelchair Project is on hold until the fall, so don’t forward checks to Wayne for now. The Salute to Business committee is meeting next week, it is likely that this event will be cancelled for 2020, I will let you know. Sue has been given her President-Elect pin, and in just two months will be taking over the helm of the club. She has been working hard to get up to speed on all of her responsibilities, thanks to her for her work!
If you go to the Give to Lincoln Day website, you can find the Lincoln East Rotary Foundation as an organization to which you can donate. The actual day is May 28th, however the Lincoln Foundation has already put up the website, so feel free to donate at any time! We also need to remember our Happy Dollar donations to Polio Plus and to the Rotary International Foundation.
Finally, the Rotary motto for this year is "Rotary Connects the World,.” With the need for service, for procedures for developing and delivering vaccines, NOW MORE THAN EVER, ROTARY CONNECTS THE WORLD.
Can Rotarian values help us deal with the current pandemic? Maybe. Let’s take a look at the 4-Way Test.
1. Is it the truth? For me this is easy. As I’ve said previously, I’m a science guy and I look to science for truth. However, sometimes it doesn’t have the immediate answers, and therefore we need sound judgement to make decisions.
2. Is it fair to all concerned? This is tougher because what may be fair to a worker out of a job because of a quarantine, may be fair to a high risk or older individual. Many folks in poverty may live in crowed quarters and could be infected if the worker contracts the disease. No good answer.
3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships? It is hard for me to imagine that the good deeds that Rotarians do, such as packing food at the Food Bank or delivering Meals on wheels, as promoted by President Dennis won’t promote recognition and good will. I made certain to wear my Rotary cap, this week when I delivered meals to let folks know about us.
4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned? Certainly, if we practice distancing and wear facial masks it should be beneficial by reducing the disease transmission.
Finally, what about our Motto: Service Above Self. As mentioned above, by packing food and delivering meals, we may subjecting ourselves to minor risk, but nevertheless, we are thinking of others. This reminds me. If President Dennis hadn’t suggested the service activities noted, I doubt if I would have volunteered. The point is that Rotary is the trigger that gets us off our duffs to go out and serve others. Thank God for Rotary! Maybe, God should be thankful for Rotary. Oops, that is not in his/her job description.
They say everything happens for a reason. It was difficult to determine what that reason was after damage was discovered to the Serving Hands public art exhibit that graced the Veterans Administration grounds in southeast Lincoln.
Last Wednesday Greg contacted Dale Lloyd and Gene Roth and had nice visits with both of them. He had to leave a voicemail with Mike Carr and he has not returned a call back.
Dale Lloyd received his CT on his spinal cancerous tumor and it has spread on his spine and into his ribs, since his last MRI and CT scan. He continues his chemo, but amazingly is in good spirits. He continues to have much trouble with his legs, arms and hands regarding usage. He said to tell everyone HELLO in the SPOKE. Greg will contact him again in 10 days.
Gene and Barbara Roth are about the same. Gene is at home, receiving regular exercise workouts from his son Tom and a lot of help from daughter, Gina. He uses a walker to get around the house, however, still cannot do stairs without help. The Doctor's continue to try to get his blood pressure regulated, so he is not so dizzy when he stands up/walking. Barb is doing okay and is done with her chemo. He also said to say HI to everyone in the SPOKE. Greg will contact him within 10 days.
We should continue to keep all of our EMT's and first responders, hospital doctors and nurses, supermarket clerks, restaurant workers laid off or furloughed and waiting for unemployment, all those who are currently unemployed, human service organizations who still are open to serve thoe poor/homeless/hungry, funeral home workers, churches, airline employees, hotel employees, gas station and convenience store workers.
