Nahla P7 Students Perform Best in Sub-County!
We were so excited when we got the exam results for our first graduating class of Primary 7 students, and found out that they all passed in the top two divisions! We had 16 total candidates taking their final exams to graduate to secondary school. Two of those students scored in Division 1 and 14 scored in Division 2.
In Uganda, passing grades are in Division 1-4. This means all of our students scored the rough equivalent of A’s and B’s in their final exams. The hard work of our teachers and students definitely paid off. Our school was the highest performing by far in Agweng Sub-County.
Our Third School Year Begins at Nahla
When word got out about the high performance at Nahla, we had an increase in the number of families wanting to enroll their children at our school. We started the year with almost 500 children registered and had to turn many children away that came from neighboring areas.We have our sights set even higher for 2020. Our dream is to be the best school in the District. So this year we are designing programming focused on professional development for our teachers, parent engagement, and skills development for our students so we can have even more Division 1 students. Like our colleague recently said: “The sky isn’t the limit for us, it’s only the beginning!”
Finalizing Construction of Hayden School
We are in the final stages of construction of our second school. All of the teachers are hired and the families are ready for their kids to start studying. We just have to finish up the roof and floors, and then the school can open.
The area is even more remote than Nahla, and the roads are impassable when it rains. This has made it very challenging for us to get building materials to the site, and caused delays that is making construction take longer than we expected. For example, this past week or so we couldn’t buy timber because there wasn’t any in town. The trucks that transport it to town were all stuck because of the bad weather and couldn’t make it.
We don’t expect these delays to impact the school year, and we are excited about the interest parents are showing in getting their kids to start school with us.We have Solar Power!
Thanks to a generous donation from the Men’s Bible Study at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Lincoln, NE, Nahla Primary School now has solar power. Now all our classrooms have lights, plus we have exterior lights for security. This is a huge deal in an area that doesn’t have any electricity and we are so proud to be able to provide this for the community for many years to come.
Thanks to Lincoln East Rotary Club who donated more than $2,000.00 to the Nahla Primary School to help provide materials for these young people.
