Jerry Christensen Orchard

The Jerry Christensen Orchard was handed over this week on behalf of Lincoln East Rotary Club by Ndola Central Rotary Club in Zambia.

 

In honor of the late IPP Jerry Christensen and of course, with his family's permission, our club earlier this Rotary year funded the establishment of an environmental club and the Jerry Christensen Orchard at a public school in Zambia. The goal of Lincoln East Rotary Club was to plant a variety of 100 fruit trees and an additional 100 orchard boundary trees. I am happy to report that with the help of our local Rotary club partner and the forestry department who facilitated buying trees at subsidized costs, we have planted an estimated total of 350 trees in two public schools. Added to honoring Jerry, the trees planted are our club's commitment to climate change mitigation. Because we have not only planted trees, but fruit trees, the orchard will provide nutrition for children in public schools.

 

One of Lincoln East Rotary Club’s areas of focus for this Rotary year is leading our district with climate stewardship initiatives both in or district and beyond. I believe that it is not only a fun adventure to identify with, but also, that it is our moral obligation to sustain the earth for generations to come.

 

Our tree planting goal for this year is 500 trees. So far, we are at 390; 110 to go!

Dick Cumming and Mercy Mwape are organizing another tree planting event in May at one of the public parks here in Lincoln. Look out for that announcement!
