As you may know, Pleasanton North Rotary is helping Santa Cruz Rotary and other 5170 Clubs make a remarkable difference in the lives of 160 Mayan families in Sanik Ya and Chitalul, Mayan villages in the highlands near Lake Atitlán, Guatemala.

The goal has been to realize a water purification project in Guatemala.

The process not been without challenges, however. Our fellow Rotarians from the Santa Cruz club informed us at our Oct. 2nd meeting that the project, planned for this month (January 2016), had been delayed due to political uncertainties.

In the latest--and very encouraging--update, we’ve learned that construction is now underway.

In a fantastic show of multi-Club collaboration, the project will be to install a water system complete with pump, storage tank and SunSpring water purification for the villages.

The pictures below reflect the incredible progress on the 150,000 liter water storage tank near the villages. The Rotary team will be installing the water purification system and working with village leadership on health and hygiene, financial sustainability and water purification training.

Another example of how Rotarians are actively engaged within their communities and those in need, both here at home and farther afield.

Stay tuned for updates on the project as we have them!
