Thank you to everyone who help raise additional funds for the vision screening device for Growing Futures Early Education Center! Total Cost: $6,470 Funds Raised: $5,312 Our club funds and the District Grant match raised $4,230, we raised an additional $1,080! This includes personal contributions from club members as well as outside donations from other friends and neighbors as a result of us promoting our project to our wider networks and spreading the word about our club and what Rotary can accomplish. Growing Futures Early Education Center, serves more than 200 children and their families with Early Head Start and Head Start programs in Johnson County. The services they offer include comprehensive support services including health and nutrition services, onsite play therapy, parent education, mental health, medical and dental health, family support and engagement opportunities. Onsite Vision Screenings The Federal Government requires Growing Futures to perform a mandatory vision screening for each child served. Normally, an onsite screening day required an outside provider to come to the center. If a family missed a school on a screening day, they would have to work to schedule an outside appointment. Having a screening machine onsite means greater flexibility and the possibility of screening during home visits. Anything to lessen the impacts of hassle in families' lives can translate to better growing and learning. Contribute by Venmo to Club Treasurer Jim Anderson: @James-Anderson-459 Memo note: Vision Screening Contribute by Check: Mail checks made payable to Shawnee Mission Rotary Club. Today, April 1, is our first SMKS Rotary Club Board Meeting using ZOOM. We are praticing so that next week we are ready to kick off our Club's first online meeting. You've probably been using this platform for video conference if you are working remotely at home, or have children/grandchildren who are fluid in most things virtual. Here's how it works: 1) Prepare for the meeting by finding a quiet spot in your house with a "safe" background as all of us will be making "home visits" through our backgrounds! 2) Use a phone, tablet or computer, but make sure it is charged up, and double check that it has a camera and microphone accessible. 3) Get online and be sure you have a good network signal. 4) Wayne will send an invitation to join his meeting by email. Hang onto that email so you don't loose it! 5) Wayne's email has a link that will take you directly to the meeting site. It will instruct you on how to join the meeting. a) You can download the app prior to the meeting if you like.If you use Windows, click the Zoom Logo at the opening of this article, if you use iOS app store for iphone or iPad. Use the Google Play store if you are using android. b) If you want to join, you may. It is not necessary to participate in the meeting. 6) At noon, Wayne will be in the virtual conference room. All you need to do is click "Join". 7) As members join, the room will be populated with each of our camera views, Probably fewer than in this picture. There will be two views, this gallery, and a speaker view, which is just that: the speaker will fill the screen with your image at the bottom corner. See you online next week!

Have you caught your breath from the wild ride we've been on since March 11? Life has certainly changed! What have you been doing instead of March Madness? Or Spring Training for Major League Baseball? Or attending concerts? Or going out to dinner? Or attending school events with children. Or their sports events? Amazing the pace we are used to, isn't it? Some of our club members are essential workers, most are working from home, many are home-schooling children, a few are home alone, and all of us need as much encouragement as possible. While we all navigate through the challenges in our respective worlds, find ways to broaden your horizons and enjoy the satisfaction of service above self. Remember too, that you are surrounded by the family of Rotary.

"Miracle Man" proven innocent after 24 years in prison “Miracle Man” Darryl Burton was wrongly convicted of a St. Louis, Missouri, murder in 1984. He was proven innocent and exonerated August 29, 2008, after serving over 24 years in prison as an innocent man. He emerged with little hope and assistance to pick up the pieces of his shattered life. Darryl's miracle story of how he rose out of this pit to become a pastor at the largest United Methodist Church in the US, is the catalyst that founded Miracle of Innocence (MOI), a 501(c)(3) organization "seeking justice and comprehensive care for the innocent." Not satisfied to simply be grateful, Darryl is giving back to help those still behind bars by raising funds and awareness, bringing about change, hope, and forgiveness. reStart is a transitional shelter and services for clients moving from homelessness to stable housing, families between housing situation, and working or disabled individuals who are establishing residency requirements to move into stable housing. Emily Randel acquainted the club with ReStart's programs and an opportunity for service. The facility has an institutional kitchen with a cook who handles shopping, preparation, serving and cleanup on her own. Tyler can always use help! She is a young mother who is dedicated to the program, clients and staff at ReStart. She helped at ReStart in High School for her National Honor Society volunteer hours and fell in love with the service/program/outreach. This past Sunday Joe Bast, Sandy Russell and Barb Jones volunteered. They helped with preparation, serving and cleanup. The following is a snapshot BEFORE their shift (5-7) started. By the time they were done, more than 60 people had been served fresh salad, home made chicken enchiladas, fresh fruit, and dessert. You may have heard that ReStart is slated to shut down. Federal, state and city funds have been redirected to other programs. If they found funding for this year's budget and beyond they could continue. Read about their services!

Shawnee Mission, like many other missions, was established as a manual training school attended by boys and girls from Shawnee, Delaware, and other Indian nations from 1839 to 1862. The mission is a National Historic Landmark and sits on a 12-acre site. We will be given a brief history of the site, talk about some of their programs and Master Plan and then members look around exhibits on their own. A light lunch will be provided.

The Board has restored a practice of many years in the Shawnee Mission Rotary Club. Each member will select a day to be highlighted and to provide a speaker for the day. The diverse professions within the group allow us to secure varied and interesting speakers. When you sign up as Rotarian of the Day, plan to: find a speaker, write a description of the speaker and the topic, find/provide a picture, and be sure to update us about YOUR work or interests. Submit to Wayne London. Emily will use the information for the website and Barb will use it for Spinning Wheel. As you will be the speaker's host on that given day, you might not want to be a greeter and/or to give the invocation that day.

Our hearts are full this season, and YOU are the reason why! These past two days, we have had the honor and privilege of handing out the amazingly generous Winter Break Bags YOU put together with love and care for the families and children served by Growing Futures. Our families were so happy, and they wanted YOU to know just how much your generosity means to them. Each family took the time to write their messages of thanks as they picked up their bag. Here are just some of the lovely things they wanted YOU to know: “Thank you for the bag. My family and I can’t thank you enough for the love and care for our kids and for the support. Thank you all and God bless you.” “We are so blessed for your amazing and so generous gifts. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!! We are going to see Frozen 2!!” "Thank you so much. I'm literally sitting here crying like a baby. I'm so grateful for you and I appreciate you guys. It's a lot being young and having three kids, but we try and I just really appreciate it. Thank you so much!" “We as parents want the best people around our children and the people at Growing Futures are the best. Thank you to all the people who put in the effort to our child’s life. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.” “Thank you very much for your act of kindness. Happy Holidays and God bless you!” “We are grateful for the lovely gift bag we have received. Thank you so much for all the thought you’ve put into it. It made our day so much brighter. You’re the best.” “This will help my family have some things to do as a family and not make us all cooped up. Thank you so much!!” On behalf of everyone here at Growing Futures, THANK YOU for helping our families make new memories! We hope you have a wonderful holiday season. We truly appreciate the kindness and cheer you brought to our families! With Deep Appreciation, Kathy McLellan Volunteer and Development Associate Growing Futures Early Education Center

I was born in Salina, KS and have never LEFT the State of Kansas. My father worked for Lipton Tea for 42 years starting as a salesman on the road in the 40’s and received promotions along the way. Well… we were “Movin’ On UP”. First to Topeka, KS and then to Overland Park, KS. At age 12 and having a brand-new Jr. High to attend in Johnson County, this middle-income boy thought he was super rich. I was the first born with 3 other siblings in my family. I am married to a wonderful wife, Sharon for the last 35 years. We have 3 children, 7 grandchildren and 2 cats named Abbey Cat and Callie Girl. I retired 4 years ago after 40 years managing physician offices and hospitals my entire career. My undergraduate degree was a Fine Arts degree in Theatre and Voice from KU. To legitimize my business career in medicine, I needed a couple of Master Degrees in business and healthcare administration. I received my residential real estate license in 2016 and am having the most fun I’ve ever had working with Reece Nichols. I don’t have many hobbies other than singing for weddings, funerals and church choir. My favorite place to vacation is on the beach or cruising. My favorite TV shows are Chicago PD, FIRE, MED and Bluebloods. My favorite food would be a big ol’ Ribeye from Longhorn Steak House. How about some karaoke Christmas Tunes?

You know a service project is going to be a success when you bring in outside help from out of state! Honorary club member Dwight Teeter planned to join us at the Sylvester Powell Center during his Kansas City visit from his current home in North Carolina. Instead, he rolled with the plans for Rotary on the Road and joined for a pizza picnic and work day at Growing Futures! As we did last year, we cleaned out the containers to tidy up for winter. There are some plans brewing for "adopting" these planters going forward, so that Rotary can help with the planting as well as the cleaning next time! If you're interested in helping with this project, please contact Jeff Jennings. Thanks to everyone who came out today!

We are excited to welcome Mr. Dennis Patton, Horticulture Agent with the Johnson County K-State Research and Extension to our club. He will talk about how he arrived in his current position, being *the* go-to guy for questions about lawn and garden care for the metro area. Mr. Patton is a frequent columnist in the Kansas City Star. How does he choose his column topics? Does he ever give advice he regrets? How have questions asked of him changed over time? We will make time for your own lawn and garden questions as well!

Jeff was born at the Independence Sanitarium and grew up in Independence, Missouri. Jeff is an IT Scrummaster and is raising two grandsons, Elijah and Jacob. His favorite hobbies include hunting, fishing, and camping. Jeff's chosen super-hero power would be the ability to fly so that he could dash off to this favorite vacation spot, the mountains. His favorite movie is It's a Wonderful Life. At Karaoke Night, Jeff would sing Aerosmith's I Don't Want to Miss a Thing. His favorite meal is steak and potatoes with creme bruelee for dessert. Jean Phillips will visit us on Wednesday, May 29 to discuss her work with Project for Innocence ( http://law.ku.edu/project-innocence). Jean is the director of the Paul E. Wilson Project for Innocence at the University of Kansas Law School as well as a Clinical Professor of Law. The Project for Innocence was founded at KU in 1965 to "help prisoners who otherwise might not receive legal representation. Students represent state and federal prisoners in appellate and post-conviction litigation in state and federal courts. Since 2009, students in the Project have won at least 28 conviction reversals. The project gets more than 200 letters a year from inmates seeking assistance." Studies estimate that between 2% and 7% of all prisoners in the U.S. are innocent and that 1 in 25 death row inmates is innocent. For context, if just 1% of all prisoners are innocent, that would mean that more than 20,000 innocent people are in prison. Some of the goals of The Innocence Project are to exonerate the innocent through DNA testing and to reform the criminal justice system to prevent future injustice.

Join us Friday, May 17 at the Mission HyVee, 6655 Martway St. The Shaween Mission Rotary Club is presenting the HyVee store with an AED to use in case a staff member or customer has a heart event in the store. Members of Consolidated Fire District No. 2 will be there to talk about how to use an AED. The Mission Police Department will also be there for their regular "Coffee with a Cop" event. It's a great chance to talk with our first responders and learn something at the same time!
Meet in the cafe area at 8 a.m.
Free coffee and donuts, too! The purchase of the AED was made with Rotary District Grant Funds - money that is made available to local Rotary clubs by the Rotary district in proportion to the donations made by individual members of a particular club. The purchase was inspired by the heart event our own club member Brian Smith (photo above left) experienced in June 2018. We are happy to report that Brian's life was saved and that he is still with us today. A testament to the good training of those around him and medical care he received. We would like everyone to be that well trained! Please join us!

Last week, our club's meeting and service day at Growing Futures Early Education Center was pretty much perfect. A beautiful fall day, cute kids, (and a bonus fire drill!), quick and visible work, and plenty of pizza! The Rotarians met with Kathy McLellan, Growing Futures' Volunteer and Development Associate, who spoke briefly about the programs offered to Johnson County children and families. Then we headed outside. We cleared the raised garden beds and the decorative planters along the parking lot. Special thanks to Jeff for taking the bulk of the yard waste bags in his truck, to Dennis for picking up the pizza, and to everyone for coming out! If you'd like to see a video from our day, click here.

Rotarian Wayne London provided a little extra service last week. Coach Dre at Shawnee Mission North High School made an emergency request for six dozen doughnuts for their staff meeting. Wayne jumped to it, and made sure that the doughnuts were labeled with Shawnee Mission Rotary (Public Image never stops!) and delivered the doughnuts at 7:30 a.m. last Friday. Safe to say they were well-appreciated! It's great to have these relationships where the help can come in many forms!

Shawnee Mission Rotary was well represented on Saturday at the District T.E.A.M. training in Lawrence. There was great information shared, Wayne and Joe completed district grant training, and the fun, food and drink was in good supply! We'll be working on a lot of what was discussed this Rotary year. Consider attending next year - it is a great boost for your Rotary membership.

This Thursday, August 16, Shawnee Mission Rotary will be out and about at the Mission Market! The market, at 5635 Johnson Drive, is open each Thursday from 4:30-8:00 p.m. The Rotary club will have a tent this week - sharing information about the club, Rotary International, and about the pancake breakfast at the Sunflower Festival on Saturday, August 25. Please stop by, even if you haven't signed up for a shift to help. It will be a fun evening. The pancake trailer and grill will be making a test run at the market on August 16 as a warm-up for the Sunflower Festival. New this year as a test: pancakes and sausage on a stick! We're going to see how they go over, and if they're a hit, offer them at the festival as well. The Sign-up for the Sunflower Festival on August 25 still has some openings. Check it out and sign up here.

Dear Rotarians: District 5710 Rotarians are awesome! In March 2018, we announced a fundraiser in the celebration of “30 Years of Women in Rotary” as part of the 2018 Rotary District Conference/Assembly. Our goal was to raise $5710 for District 5710 to provide hygiene kits to women in disaster and under-served areas. Contributions were to made to Heart to Heart International. Thanks to Rotarians in District 5710, we surpassed our goal and successfully raised $7941.10. This is huge!! Thank you to everyone who contributed to the fundraising drive. Your generosity is appreciated! Our kits will be sent to Malawi, SE Africa. At the District Conference/Assembly, we were honored to have Jim Mitchum, CEO, and two founders from Heart to Heart accept a symbolic check for our district contributions. The final campaign results would not have been possible without the support of all Rotarians in the entire district. Together we can do great things!! In honor and in celebration of the 30 Years of Women in Rotary fundraising campaign, all contributions are greatly appreciated. The following clubs sent in “group” contributions of $50 or more from fundraisers and “pass the hat” events. While surfing the web, I found a description of Rotary that is something I could use to describe Rotary International. Also, directing people to the international website is easy: www.rotary.org. The following is the text from rotary.org/about-rotary/ (I'd embed it except that mobile versions cant read it): Rotary is a global network of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves. Solving real problems takes real commitment and vision. For more than 110 years, Rotary's people of action have used their passion, energy, and intelligence to take action on sustainable projects. From literacy and peace to water and health, we are always working to better our world, and we stay committed to the end. Learn more about our structure and our foundation and our strategic vision. What we do Rotary members believe that we have a shared responsibility to take action on our world’s most persistent issues. Our 35,000+ clubs work together to: Promote peace Fight disease Provide clean water, sanitation, and hygiene Save mothers and children Support education Grow local economies

New Club Text Message Reminders In an effort to stay more connected with our members, we'll be starting a new text message service. Club members will receive a text message reminder about the club meeting each week, along with any special information. Members can opt out of the service, and those without texting capabilities can receive a voice call. The hope is that this will be an easy way to reach everyone using a method of communication that is increasingly viewed as the most convenient - texting! The Spinning Wheel and other email communication will still be sent, as usual. We'll test it for the first time on Wednesday and then can discuss at the club meeting. Please let me know if you have any questions in the meantime.

You see it every week, but when was the last time you really looked? It's our club's welcome sign, faithfully greeting club members and visitors week in and week out. The sign was showing its age, and last week, Wayne London took it upon himself to put his skills to work and show the sign a little T.L.C. Thank you, Wayne! Now we're all spruced up for the years ahead! Someone proving once again that Rotarians are People of Action!

This week's program is a panel consisting of Adrian Eszter, Wayne London and Mark Lieb (alpha order). As architects, they each have several experiences in common and yet practice in an overarching profession with unique contributions. Adrian Eszter Mark Lieb Wayne London Service above self a value they share through Rotary and in each of their life experiences. Most recently Mark served as our Club President, Wayne leads the way with the One Stop Shop, and Adrian was a GSE participant in Missouri which led to a pivotal job from a KC Rotarian. All have been or continue to serve the club and district. International expertise is another value they share. Adrian studied architecture in Buenos Aires, worked in a small firm there and participated in GSE which brought him to Kansas City as a professional. Though he oversees work in Canada and Puerto Rico, he has had extensive design and project oversight for international projects for BRR. Mark works with standardization and reciprocity through the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. As one who focuses on the big picture and team building with relationships between clients, governance boards and regulatory criteria, his international focus comes through soccer. A lifelong fan and athlete, he has coached all three of his children's soccer teams and enjoys the growing culture of soccer in Kansas City. Wayne has had the most diverse international experience of building sporting facilities in many locations around the world. However, he was in charge of placing the roof on the Rozzelle Courtyard at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art and also renovated the Atkins auditorium and two galleries. Adrian has worked on schools, parks, fountains, large retailers and infrastructure. Mark has worked with residences and real estate, project management, and guiding the political process of professionals from various perspectives achieving common goals. Wayne has worked with multi-family housing, art gallery projects, sporting arenas and the Church of the Resurrection sanctuary. Between them, people are protected, interact with the arts, sports, worship, education and commerce. Click here for more details on each. Thanks, Adrian, Mark, and Wayne for your many contributions!

Did you receive your February copy of the Rotarian? Jimmy Carter is on the front, which caught my eye. Recently I listened to two of his books as I drove, via Audible.com. The feature story of The Rotarian is a conversation with our former President about peace, free elections and lessons learned from a life devoted to service. I have had an affinity to Mr. Carter since my days at Emory, where he occasionally dropped in as a lecturer in our classes on Social Ethics, Professional Ethics, and the role of persons of faith within politics. That was 40 years ago... and I've taken groups to Plains, GA, to visit Habitat for Humanity where we've had personal exchanges with him. Other articles in this month's magazine are Waging Peace, Service above Selfies and the Peace Dividend. Looks like a well done issue, as usual!

We enjoyed our first week at the Down Syndrome Guild building last week! It is our new meeting location, and it is located at 5960 Dearborn Street. This is just one block east of the Sylvester Powell, Jr. Community Center on Dearborn, between Johnson Drive and Martway. Parking: Please park in the overflow lot off of Beverly if you are able. For those who prefer closer parking, there are spaces available adjacent to the building, and street parking on Dearborn as well. We will have greeters in the lobby the building to help you know you've come to the right place. The change of location allows us to pay a lower weekly room charge than we were paying at the Sylvester Powell, Jr. Community Center, and that payment will support the programs of the Down Syndrome Guild. Amy Allison, the Executive Director of the Down Syndrome Guild of Greater Kansas City, is our program speaker on Wednesday, and we are looking forward to building a stronger relationship with this local organization. https://goo.gl/maps/6h6UBwENS5z

Saturday was a great work day - clearing vines and volunteer shoots from around the trees along Shawnee Mission Parkway. Two big piles of brush and done by 11! A little poison ivy, but it was quick work, in the shade and great fellowship as always! Thanks to everyone who participated!

This week at Rotary, we'll hear from one of our very favorite visiting Rotarians, Wayne Byrd, and Vicki Lilly from the Arts & Recreation Foundation. They will be talking about plans to grow the Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. Founded to keep the city at the forefront of environmental and ecological issues, The Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens is a year-round destination with a wide variety of experiences, seasonal programs and events for all ages. The “Growing to Inspire” campaign is underway to help the city grow the Arboretum. Also, we'll have two special presentations - we will hold a pinning ceremony for Dahnika Short, our newest club member, and members from the Shawnee Mission North High School Class of 1962 will join us to present their check supporting the One Stop Shop renovation project. Good things are going on at Rotary. See you Wednesday!

Following Hurricane Harvey, our Rotary district leadership put out a call to the clubs to raise $5 per Rotarian, which the district would match up to $11,725. The Shawnee Mission Rotary club raised $642 in just two days, which is more than $14 per member. The Lenexa Rotary Club also organized a volunteer event at Heart to Heart International, preparing hygiene kits for those displaced by the hurricane. Working together with Rotarians and friends from around the district gave us a chance to feel useful while the very first phases of response to the disaster were still unfolding in Texas. Thanks to everyone to contributed to this quick and impressive response!

Barb Jones submitted an article on our club's activities with Shawnee Mission North to the District newsletter. Thank you for spreading the news about our good work, Barb!
Rotary International has six areas of focus for global service, and the Shawnee Mission Rotary Club accomplishes several through their partnership with Shawnee Mission North High School (SMN), located near Club’s meeting space. A number of club members attended “Shawnee Mission High School” prior to the rapid growth of NE Johnson County evolving into a district with 6 high schools, renaming it to Shawnee Mission North High School. SME, SMW, SMS, SMNW and the Heritage school followed. Club members attended other SMSD high schools, but teenage rivalries mean nothing when it comes to serving the needs of students! Every other week Wayne London take supplies to fill the stock Coach Dre` maintains and Wayne provides a viable witness to serving the at-risk students attending SMN. Coach Andre` Carnegie is the District’s Student Success Liaison, touching base with all feeder schools for SMN, learning the needs behind the scenes of a usual school day. SM Rotary Club has worked over the past two years to support the One Stop Shop that Coach Dre` created; first from a closet and now in a room dedicated to its purpose. Groceries were provided as a donation from ticket sales for the “Grocery Store Grab” fundraiser in cooperation with Hy-Vee on Martway. Coach Dre` created the “One Stop Shop” at SMN to be a safe place to provide what a student might need to have a good day. With no questions asked, a student can stop by to get a snack from the refrigerator, a bottle of water to drink or an encouraging word. If clothes or hygiene cause ridicule, or a student not prepared for the day can stop in and find something else to change into and keep on going through with higher self-esteem.
Ed Coulter masterminded the “Grocery Grab” which was a great success. The weekend before school opened, club members met to paint, lay carpet, and provide furniture arranged to make it a friendly, safe place for anyone to drop by during the day for a bit of motivation. Corky Nason made a generous donation toward the project’s expenses and club members donated 4-6 hours each.
Shawnee Mission North was the elite public school of NE Johnson County 50+ years ago, and is now one of 6 SMSD high schools serving a very different set of demographic realities. More than forty-five % of the students at SMN receive free or reduced lunch. The school embraces the creativity and diversity of its student population while maintaining an excellent educational experience. Another program Shawnee Mission Rotary provides is the ROTC Scholarship, awarded to an outstanding member of the group. As Coach Dre` encourages and advocates for students all day, usually behind the scenes, Shawnee Mission Rotary club encourages him through their dedication and volunteer efforts.

Saturday, great things were happening at Shawnee Mission North! The transformation of the One Stop Shop is nearly complete! Special thanks to Wayne London for his careful planning and organization of the project, and to Corky Nason for his generous contribution to the project's expenses. And, thanks to the volunteers for your great, quick work on Saturday! All that's left now is the installation of the new furniture, and the students will be coming back to a welcoming and functional space!

Dave Boone has invited all club members to participate in bowling this year as team members or as substitutes. If you cannot commit to a team, you can most likely substitute every time you come. They play at Ward Parkway Lanes, at 4:30 pm on Wednesdays. $15.00 a week pays the fee for games, shoes and ball rental.

Club member Wayne London shared plans with the club last week for a service project at Shawnee Mission North High School's One Stop Shop. The club is continuing its support of the food pantry at the One Stop Shop, but we, along with Coach Dre, the Student Success Liaison at SMN, have identified the need for some improvements in the physical space. The club is proposing a work day or two to paint the walls, replace the carpet and some of the furniture, and to add a small meeting area to make the space more functional and inviting. At last week's meeting, Corky Nason kicked off fundraising for the estimated $1,800 project costs with an incredible pledge of $1,000, and the club hopes to collaborate with Elaine Copp's graduating class from North for an additional contribution. If anyone has questions about the project, please contact Wayne London.

It's a new Rotary year at the district level, too! District Governor Adam Ehlert hosted the District 5710 Leadership Team at the CommunityAmerica Ballpark for some extra fun along with the first business meeting of the year. We'd like to make sure our directory is updated for the new year! You should have received an email from me, asking for you to review, and update if necessary, your online member profile. I used the preformatted request form, so I hope it makes sense! If it left you unclear, go to www.smksrotary.org, and on the top right corner check "Login". If you have forgotten your information, follow the instructions and Tom Talkington will send it to you. Once you log in, click "member area" in the top right, then click "edit profile" to make changes. If you don't recognize your picture, I "snagged it" from a photo taken at a Rotary meeting last year. Feel free to update it! Something we just learned was how to use the JOINED ROTARY field and the JOINED THIS CLUB field. You might want to check those dates. Thanks for your help! ~Barb

The pancake breakfast is coming up! After you've signed up for a volunteer shift, make sure to spread the word about the event to your friends, family and colleagues. An event page has been created on the club's Facebook account here, which makes it easy to share. Share the event post to your own personal page along with a note letting people know they can purchase tickets in advance. You can just suggest that they direct message you, or leave a comment on your post, and you'll coordinate getting the tickets to them. Sell! Sell! Flip! (the pancakes, that is.)

Did you know?
by Russ Erickson
At the 1928 Rotary Convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the Rotary Foundation was named and a Board of Trustees created. (Before that the RI Board of Directors had oversight of the funds.)
In 1930, the Foundation awarded $500 to the International Society of Crippled Children, which later became known as Easter Seals. (The International Society of Crippled Children was founded by Rotarian Edgar Allen, who worked closely with Paul Harris and other Rotarians to aid children with disabilities.)
In 1936, Institutes for International Understanding were formed to illuminate global issues and to inform communities of global issues of the day.
In 1947, Rotary members contributed 1.3 million dollars in memory of Paul Harris.
In 1957, Paul Harris Fellow recognition began – the first form of donor recognition, expressing appreciation of eligible contributions of $1000. (In 2006, the number of Paul Harris Fellows reached 1 million.)
