Happy Valentines Day! Hope your day is filled with love  This week our guest will be Jules Rudigier and Dancer with Canine Companions  Founded in 1975, Canine Companions is a national, non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained service dogs at no charge leading to greater recipient independence and confidence. They have provided over 7,000 service dogs to people with disabilities from six regional training centers and serve people throughout the U.S. Canine Companions provides service dogs for: - Adults with physical or auditory disabilities.
- Children with physical or cognitive disabilities aged five or older or adults with physical or cognitive disabilities who require the assistance of a facilitator such as a parent, caregiver, or spouse.
- Veterans with a physical or auditory disability or post-traumatic stress disorder* (PTSD).
- Professionals working in a health care, visitation, criminal justice, or education setting.
Assistance dogs aren’t just born, they’re raised. Volunteer puppy raisers will raise a puppy from 8 months of age until 16 months. They will provide specially bred puppies a safe home, teach them over 40 cues (commands), take them to obedience classes, serve up a healthy diet, provide socialization opportunities and give lots of love. Each hour spent caring for a Canine Companions puppy is vital to its development as a future assistance dog. The puppy raising program provides a unique opportunity for volunteers to assist with our very important mission. |
