Tyler Stewart, as head coach and the Shawnee Mission Northwest Lady Cougars basketball team just completed a 23-0 campaign, the first in program history. The Kansas state champions also earned Tyler the distinction of being the 2021 Topeka Capital-Journal girls coach of the year.

 

Stewart has led Northwest to the state tournament six times in his seven years and earned a record of 129-35. This was the second time to play in the championship game and 2021 earned the ultimate prize.

 

Tyler has a rich history in the game of basketball.  Earning a championship at Burlington high school as a player in 2004, jumped to the next level for McPherson College as a player, then moving on to coach  Silver Lake  high school- where he also won a state title in 2012. Finally moving up to the state's highest classification at Shawnee Mission Northwest-6A. 

 

When Tyler and Silver Lake won the 3a championship in 2012, it came at the expense of his father-Doug and sister-Madison. Breaking the hearts of family, Tyler beat his dad as coach of Burlington and sister-Madison as a player.
