Stories
Ewan Shortess - Rotarian and Speaker of the Day
Ewan was born and raised in Port Townsend, Washington on the northeast tip of the Olympic Peninsula. His lifelong passion for railroads and transportation led him to study at Iowa State University and major in Supply Chain Management. Ewan’s ultimate goal after college was to work in the railroad industry and he was fortunate to start his career with BNSF Railway. His career with BNSF led him to Kansas City and he currently works at Argentine Yard (BNSF’s Largest) in Kansas City, Kansas.

Outside of railroading, Ewan enjoys hiking and camping in the Pacific Northwest, Mountain West, or Desert Southwest. He is planning on backpacking in the Grand Canyon in May. Ewan also enjoys exploring rural America and has recently developed a fascination with rural Kansas. He is currently trying to visit all 105 counties in Kansas (although there are quite a few left to go!).
Ewan and his father, John, taking a break from hiking in the Three Sisters Wilderness, Willamette National Forest in Central Oregon in September. The large white patch in the upper left is a glacier!
No Board Today
Board Meeting has been rescheduled for Jan 15.
Thank you!

What's a Rotarian of the Day?
The Board has restored a practice of many years in the Shawnee Mission Rotary Club. Each member will select a day to be highlighted and to provide a speaker for the day.  The diverse professions within the group allow us to secure varied and interesting speakers.

When you sign up as Rotarian of the Day, plan to: find a speaker, write a description of the speaker and the topic, find/provide a picture, and be sure to update us about YOUR work or interests.  Submit to Wayne London. Emily will use the information for the website and Barb will use it for Spinning Wheel.  As you will be the speaker's host on that given day, you might not want to be a greeter and/or to give the invocation that day.

Remember: sign up to Greet!

Thank You from Early Futures
Our hearts are full this season, and YOU are the reason why!

These past two days, we have had the honor and privilege of handing out the amazingly generous Winter Break Bags YOU put together with love and care for the families and children served by Growing Futures.

Our families were so happy, and they wanted YOU to know just how much your generosity means to them. Each family took the time to write their messages of thanks as they picked up their bag.

Here are just some of the lovely things they wanted YOU to know:

“Thank you for the bag. My family and I can’t thank you enough for the love and care for our kids and for the support. Thank you all and God bless you.”

“We are so blessed for your amazing and so generous gifts. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!! We are going to see Frozen 2!!”

"Thank you so much. I'm literally sitting here crying like a baby. I'm so grateful for you and I appreciate you guys. It's a lot being young and having three kids, but we try and I just really appreciate it. Thank you so much!"

“We as parents want the best people around our children and the people at Growing Futures are the best. Thank you to all the people who put in the effort to our child’s life. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.”

“Thank you very much for your act of kindness. Happy Holidays and God bless you!”

“We are grateful for the lovely gift bag we have received. Thank you so much for all the thought you’ve put into it. It made our day so much brighter. You’re the best.”

“This will help my family have some things to do as a family and not make us all cooped up. Thank you so much!!”

On behalf of everyone here at Growing Futures, THANK YOU for helping our families make new memories! We hope you have a wonderful holiday season. We truly appreciate the kindness and cheer you brought to our families!
With Deep Appreciation,

Shout out that the Shawnee Mission Rotary Club was named in a Letter to the Editor in Sunday's Kansas City Star.
In 2018 we gave $150 to the Starlight Quilters Guild. This group provides quilts to kids going into the DCF foster care system.
It's a great Letter to the Editor, January 5, 2020.
