Meet Suzi Gibbs with the Mission Community Food Pantry

I am the wife of Jack Gibbs, mother of two sons – Mitch Barnhart – Lexington, KY and Eric Barnhart – Norman Oklahoma- making us football and basketball fans of University of KY and Oklahoma University. I am the proud grandmother of 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. I grew up in Kansas City – am a “dot” graduating from Wyandotte High School – completing my degree from Ottawa University in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree.

I served on the City Council for the City of Mission for 24 years and as the City Clerk for 6 years.  As a city council member, I took on the tasks of the BBQ contest, An Evening with the Arts, The Mission Parade, etc..Mission Magazine, Family Adopted Program. I co-owned and operated a business in Mission Mart – Wee Wonderland children’s shop for 6 years before moving to Lake of the Ozarks to retire in 1994.

Moving back to Mission in 2000 I not only decided to get my degree, but I also ran again for city council after moving into Milhaven. I am out of retirement.

Two years ago, I received a phone call from Rhonda (Trinity Lutheran Church) asking if I was interested in forming a Food Pantry -  hence the beginning of the Mission Community Food Pantry which I am proud to say today is thriving with lots of volunteers and donors.

Plan Ahead for Your Summer with Rotary
First Wednesday of the Month:  Rotary on the Road

Second Wednesday of the Month:  In person planning session + board meeting @ Milburn. Until we are back up and running, we will use this meeting for fellowship and planning.  We’d like to encourage everyone to attend and participate as we make plans to move forward post Covid.   We will also introduce “Stoney’s Corner”.  Stoney will provide an update on business happenings in the northeast corridor.

Third Wednesday of the Month:  Service project. We are setting aside time each month for a community service project in lieu of a regular meeting. These projects may fall on an evening or weekend.  We plan to announce these as soon as they are scheduled to allow as many as possible to help.

Fourth Wednesday Month:  Guest speaker + lunch in person @ Milburn

Fifth Wednesday if applicable:  Gather for lunch somewhere in Mission or social gathering after work
Because of the holiday in July and some events already on our calendar, we won’t follow the new plan exactly for the first month.

Scheduled events:

Friday, September 17th Harvesting Hope Fundraiser (5-7:30 pm):  benefit for Growing Futures @ Shawnee Mission Theater in the Park.

Harvesting Hope Fundraiser

This year, Growing Future Early Education Center is hosting a "Harvesting Hope" fundraiser at Shawnee Mission Theatre in the Park. There will be live music, a craft market, dinner, beer, wine, games, a raffle, and more. There are opportunities for volunteer groups to help out at the event. We are targeting the 5:00-7:30 p.m. shift. This will be hosting the games, bar, running ice, selling tickets, etc.

I know some schedules will change between now and then, but they are asking for names of volunteers now. If you think you will be interested in volunteering, please let Emily Randel know and she will add your name to our volunteer form.
