Jennifer E Jones Rotary International President-Elect
Join us and meet Rotary International President-Nominee Jennifer Jones (2022-2023). This will be the first time in 115 years that Rotary International will have a female president and it's a groundbreaking occasion. The Olathe Rotary Club has secured Jones for their program and they've graciously invited the entire district to join the Zoom. For this special opportunity they will dispense with most of the traditional meeting functions and let the focus be on Jones for the entirety of their meeting. Finally, in case you can't make it, the meeting will be recorded and shared in the near future. We will be joining the meeting from our Milburn location - still time to RSVP: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b094aabad2ea6fb6-lunch

RYLA is happening!

RYLA 2021 is happening!  There will be a virtual camp similar to last year.  The big news is that in a meeting with KU last Thursday they told me of their plans for not just a virtual camp, but a day camp in Lawrence and a day camp in Overland Park (at the Edward’s Campus).

The hope is to have a face to face day camp at KU for RYLA.  Campers will need to drive themselves to/from Lawrence.  Camp will begin with an orientation Sunday night, course work Monday through Thursday and then graduation on Friday.

They hope to have a second camp at the Edwards campus in Overland Park. I have been informed that KU held 56 events over the fall months with over 6,000 students in attendance The chancellor noted that there were no outbreaks from any of the KU sanctioned events. RYLA is a KU sanctioned event.

These camps would be held over three different weeks in June.  The dates are not set.  The virtual camp would have a price point at $50 while the face to face camps would cost $225. As before, the student and/or their family will pay the $25 application fee and your club would sponsor the remainder of the cost.

While I know this letter is lacking many typical RYLA details, clubs should consider reaching out to teenagers they think would meet the criteria.  The application is included and is lacking due dates, pricing and most of the details. I expect that you will have a few questions I have not addressed, so feel free to contact me if you wish. As soon as more details become available, I will let you know so everyone involved can plan accordingly.

Thank you so much for your support of RYLA in past years. I hope to bring you more RYLA news very soon.

Yours In Rotary,

Jacci Leib

Help Us Meet Our Goal!
Growing Futures Early Education Center, serves more than 200 children and their families with Early Head Start and Head Start programs in Johnson County. The services they offer include comprehensive support services including health and nutrition services, onsite play therapy, parent education, mental health, medical and dental health, family support and engagement opportunities.

Shawnee Mission Rotary Club + Growing Futures
The Shawnee Mission Rotary Club has worked to support Growing Futures for many years. Whether it is garden clean-up, painting projects or fundraising, the relationship has been growing as our members are committed to help Growing Futures with their work to serve our kids. In 2020, we asked how we could help further. They wanted to know if we could help them purchase an onsite vision screening device.

Onsite Vision Screenings
The Federal Government requires Growing Futures to perform a mandatory vision screening within 45 days of the program semester start date. Normally, an onsite screening day required an outside provider to come to the center. If a family missed a school on a screening day, they would have to work to schedule an outside appointment. Having a screening machine onsite means greater flexibility and the possibility of screening during home visits. Anything to lessen the impacts of hassle in families' lives can translate to better growing and learning on the part of the children.

Help Us Close the Gap!
We are nearly there! We just need $2,238 dollars to raise all the funds required! The machine costs $6,470. We have $2,820 in Rotary District Grant Funds, $1,410 in Club Contributions. Can you help us close that gap? Donations of any size are greatly appreciated.
