Bryan Meyer: SM North Class of 2001

Bryan was attached to Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 365 (HMM 365) and was deployed to Iraq twice as well as participated in the embassy evacuation of Liberia. Following the Marine Corps, Bryan retuned home to Kansas City and attended the University of Missouri Kansas City, earning a Master’sdegree in Public Administration and a Law degree. Prior to co-founding VCP, Bryan practiced law in the greater Kansas City area and founded a nonprofit organization that provides free legal service to Veterans.

Joan Slawson: SM North Class of 1981

Joan comes from a proud Military family.  Her Grandfather served as a Medic in WWI.  Her father was a Army Motorcycle MP in WWII.  Joan’s husband was a Marine in Vietnam who died of Agent Orange Lung cancer and her daughter was an Army MP.  Joan was not in the military but became dedicated to supporting those that were called to our Nation’s Military service.  After working in the public sector for over 30 years and the loss of her husband, she searched for a place to volunteer her time that honored her husband’s service and served Veterans; she found VCP.  Joan has been a full-time volunteer at VCP since January 2017.  Her history as an Executive Administrator and Event Coordinator is useful as she currently spends her days at the front desk at Community Center in the Village and coordinating the 80 “Core Volunteers” who Paint, Build Furniture, Clean and Stage the tiny houses in the village before a new resident moves in.
