Environmental stewardship is one of Rotary’s seven global areas of focus — and here in Alameda, we take that responsibility to heart. The Rotary Club of Alameda is committed to creating a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable community through hands‑on service, education, and partnerships that make a measurable difference.

Our approach blends practical action with long‑term vision. Every initiative we take on is designed to reduce waste, conserve resources, and inspire others to join us in protecting the planet we all share.

🌎 How We Take Action

Tree Planting in Alameda Parks

In partnership with 100K Trees for Humanity and the Alameda Recreation and Park Department, we organize, sponsor, and volunteer for tree‑planting events throughout Alameda. These efforts expand our urban canopy, improve air quality, and create greener public spaces for generations to enjoy.

Fruit Tree Sapling Giveaways

Each year at the City of Alameda’s Spring Shindig, we distribute free fruit tree saplings to local residents. This initiative promotes local food production, biodiversity, and community engagement.

Annual Lithium‑Ion Battery Recycling Event

To help keep hazardous materials out of landfills and protect the climate, we host an annual lithium‑ion battery recycling event. Alameda residents can safely dispose of batteries.  Mining, refining and shipping the raw minerals needed in batteries is very energy-intensive and thereby produces lots of greenhouse gas, warming the climate.  Recycling these minerals is an important action to protect the climate

Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Event

Our Rotary club assists Alameda Boy Scout Troop 11 in collecting and recycling Christmas trees in town to produce pine-scented products.  
 

Climate Protection Committee

Our dedicated Climate Protection Committee leads the club’s environmental initiatives, explores new sustainability opportunities, and helps members stay informed about climate‑related issues affecting our community.

Climate Protection Lending Library

We maintain a curated lending library of books focused on climate science, sustainability, and environmental solutions. Members can borrow materials to deepen their knowledge and spark new ideas for action.

No‑Waste, Climate‑Friendly Club Meals

We model sustainable practices at every meeting by serving no‑waste lunches.

  • Waste is sorted into recycling or composting bins - no waste goes to the landfill.

  • Vegetarian options help reduce carbon emissions and conserve water.

  • Tap water served in pitchers eliminates the need for single‑use plastic bottles. These small choices add up — and demonstrate how everyday habits can support a healthier planet.
