Ryan Clausnitzer’s (Claws-knit-zer) dedication to public service began in college, volunteering on spring break work trips for the Habitat for Humanity.

After graduating from Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota with degrees in Geography & History, including some time studying in Rome, Italy, Ryan spent over two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Kingdom of Tonga working on local environmental issues.

This experience shifted his career focus from city planning to public health with roles in the Santa Cruz, Berkeley, and the City and County of San Francisco’s public health departments, focusing on Environmental Health.

Between taking courses in community colleges to obtain additional credentials, he made time to serve as a mentor (a “Big”) for the Big Brother and Big Sisters of the Bay Area from 2007-2013.

After moving to Alameda in 2012 with his wife Nicole, and after the birth of their daughter, Helen, Ryan was appointed by the Alameda City Council to serve on the Board of the Alameda County Mosquito Abatement District.

Three years later, and after their son Henry was born, he was recruited to manage the district.

During this time, Ryan attended the Goldman School of Public Policy at UC Berkeley to obtain his Master of Public Affairs.
