At our last meeting, we were privileged to have our Assistant District Governor John Curtis and his wife Janie with us for our Installation Banquet. Ana provided a delicious meal and we heard from Immediate Past President Philip Paul and from our new President Bill Forbus. It sounds like we have a lot to do, so you don’t want to miss out!! Thanks to Cathy Bedsole for the pics!

The Royse City Rotary Club was privileged to have Attorney Susan Satterwhite as our speaker today. Susan gave us all a check list of things we all need to do in order to have our affairs in order for the remainder of our lives. One of the most important documents she recommended was to have a Statutory Durable Power of Attorney for our legal and financial affairs. She also recommended a Medical Power of Attorney and a Directive to Physician. We all need to get things in order so that our family does not have problems after our death. The last thing Susan suggested was to make a list of your personal belongings with who you want to get certain items and to write a family history including important dates and information concerning your family that could be hard to find at a later date. This was a very informative meeting and we want to thank Susan for her expertise. Thank you!!

At our last meeting, we heard from our own Lucille Bell, Executive Director of CASA for Rockwall and Kaufman counties. Lucille gave us some startling statistics about child abuse: in 2016 2200 children died, 58,644 children were abused, 60% of children in CPS care are 6 and under, 48,000 children in child protective services. CASA acts for the child and can only enter a case when the court appoints a CPS case to them. This is the 25th year for CASA that started in Oregon with a caring judge that saw that the child needed a voice. The Rockwall/Kaufman office served 190 children last year. They currently have 86 volunteers that work to help the children in our area. Please consider helping them by attending their car show on May 21 in the Harbor, or attending their Clay Shoot on August 26 in Scurry, or maybe by becoming a CASA volunteer yourself! Thank you Lucille for a great meeting.

At our meeting last week, we had the privilege of having a scrumptious breakfast and then moving to Becknell Park. We had a great crowd of Rotarians and special guests Don & Peggy Becknell, Mayor Janet Nichol, and Becknell grandchildren. This is the first of the additions that Rotary will be making at Becknell Park. Be looking for benches and trash cans in the future. Thanks to all that made this happen—especially the Parks Department of Royse City. What a great day!!

At our last meeting, we heard from two of our Interact students Ximena Martinez and Lauren Huddin that attended the Human Rights Symposium put on by District 5810. They were told of many problems in the world that they were not aware existed. They found out about several different groups that are helping people around the world with everything from mobility to sex trafficking. They are collecting crutches, wheelchairs, and walkers to send to Africa for polio victims. If you have any of these items, please get in touch with Renee Wallace at the high school. Thanks girls for a great program!

At our last meeting, we heard from our own Clay Ellis about his trip to Scotland. Clay went on a hunting trip of a lifetime and was able to kill a red stag and a fallow buck, along with catching a beautiful rainbow trout. The meat from the animals was given to a local food pantry, but the horns are being mounted for Clay. We were able to see beautiful pictures of castles and the land of Scotland also. Thanks Clay for sharing your trip with all of us. The hunters are really jealous now!  Clay is pictured here with his lovely wife, Amy!

He gave interesting facts such as: the Arboretum has over one million visitors a year; they have planted 50,000 tulips, and have a new parking garage. He also told us about the New Tasteful Place that will be coming in the future along with the Twelve Days of Christmas again this year. A season pass is only $100 and you can bring 5 more people along with you! What a deal!

At our last meeting we heard from Kathy Brandon the “Happinesschick”.  She asked if we were chasing happy. Interesting thought, isn’t it. There is a difference between joy & happiness. Joy is the prospect of possessing what you desire; while happiness is a feeling. When you serve others, you automatically have joy!

At our last meeting we heard from Harold Magnum about sharpening our memory skills. He told us that every 52 minutes someone comes down with Alzheimer’s so we all need to work on increasing our mental capabilities.  Most of us are not increasing our brain on a regular basis; to do this we need to use more of our senses. This was a very interesting topic that many of us needed to hear. Thanks for the information, Harold.

Trevon "Sundiata" Ferguson, self-proclaimed Life Architect spoke to the club on November 18, 2014. He mentioned how Rotary's support and involvement with the community soccer program was a major player in helping him make it out of the third world country he grew up in. His battle with Multiple Sclerosis, cancer, and being an amputee has enabled him to seek life with purpose. Sundiata's story is captured in his new book, The ABCs of Empowerment.

Parking is their main problem and several new lots will be created to help solve that problem. There are currently 14 restaurants in the 14 block historic district! All plans have a completion date of summer 2015—things are really happening in our area! Thanks Bethany!

So much of what we have heard is blown way out of proportion-it was nice to hear the truth from someone who experienced it firsthand.

Last week we had the privilege of having two outstanding speakers. Rick Ostroski from First Methodist Church told us about the food pantry, Our Daily Bread, and how the demand for assistance is a growing concern in Rockwall County. Anyone that would like to continue making a contribution can still do so. Just bring your canned goods to our meeting and they will be delivered to the church. We also had the chance of hearing one of our former RYLA students, Ryon Phillips. Ryon has returned from a mission trip to Cambodia where he met with the children of Cambodia. He told a heart-wrenching story of a little boy in need of a wheelchair. Before the meeting was over, Ryon had a wheelchair thanks to Tom and Ginny Ryan and $120 to help get the chair to Cambodia. What a wonderful Rotarian meeting!!

Adoption Awareness Carnival

A great group of Rotarians came together after braving all sorts of traffic problems for a wonderful carnival for some very deserving children. It is always a heart-warming experience to serve these children and watch as perspective parents follow the children they would like to adopt. As of Monday, 4 children have definitely found parents, 15 others have been selected by 25 families who must go through additional studies. Thanks to all who made this happen!

Last week we heard from head coach and athletic director, Greg Strahm.  Royse City is in a new district again this year, and Greg brought us up-to-date with the challenges ahead for the players. He explained that we have some new, young coaches that are inspiring our young men to do their absolute best. The slogan for this year’s team is “Fight, Faith, Finish”—that says a lot, doesn’t it? Go Bulldogs!!

Rockwall Rotary’s annual Hot Rocks Bike Race is scheduled for Saturday, August 11. Several of us that have worked this event in the past are tied up at another district function that morning. We need people to step up and help with the water station that has been assigned to us. If you cannot work the entire time, please consider working a couple of hours. This is a wonderful way to make friends with our Rockwall Rotary and it is a lot of fun!!

This week we will be having 2 outstanding programs. One of our RYLA alumni, Ryon Phillips, will be talking to us about his recent mission trip to Cambodia. He has a wonderful story to tell and we were lucky to work him in before he had to start football practice in Missouri. Our main speaker is Rick Ostroski, youth minister at First Methodist Royse City. Rick is also in charge of the food pantry, Our Daily Bread, and has some interesting facts concerning the poverty level in Rockwall County. We will have a full meeting so be sure you are on time, as we will be starting our program a little early. This will be one you don’t want to miss!

What a wonderful meeting we had this week! We had a full house and a full program with the three judges of Rockwall County. (That sounds like the title of a book) Our Interact Club had 6 members and their sponsor, Renee Wallace, present for their World Week Celebration—it is always a treat to have our Interact Club with us. The judges were very informative and pretty funny too, and told a lot of things that some of us that live in Rockwall probably didn’t know. We were invited to attend the dedication of their new courtrooms on November 11 starting at 4:00. We should try to attend and give them the support they showed for our club.

Even though we had technical difficulties and were not able to see the pictures of how Blue Bell looked in the early days, we still were able to have a great program. It was interesting to hear the differences in how ice creams are made, packaged, and distributed. We even got to eat ice cream for dessert for breakfast!! We also want to thank Mike Niebuhr for providing ice cream for the Adoption Awareness Carnival—thanks again Mike!

Thanks to all those who braved the RAIN to help with the Rockwall Hot Rocks Bike Race. While the   numbers of riders was down somewhat the enthusiasm was still there from those   who suffered through the elements. Our rest stop was well-manned and eager to   help those that stopped momentarily.

Governor Bud’s main goal this year is to increase membership and he  gave the club different ways to bring new members into our club. It is always a   privilege to have the District Governor, his wife, the Governor’s Aide, and our  Assistant Governor with us!

Last week we had our first Club Assembly of the year and we heard from each area of service. David Gardner encouraged us to find out when and where other clubs meet so that meeting could be used for a make-up. Ginny Ryan told us that we need to increase our membership this year and especially focus on bringing in younger members. Mary Johnson is trying to increase our media coverage in the PR area. Ted Bedsole’s area of service has many different programs including: flags, international projects, youth programs, and blood drives. David Magness, chair of  our RI Foundation will be having a program concerning Foundation goals soon. All these areas all are in need of your help—there is a place for you. If you have a passion for a particular area, please see one of these people so they can help you get started.

Our speaker last week was Joe DeLane, coordinator for the Rockwall County Emergency Management.  We learned that the biggest threats in our area are severe weather and hazardous material incidents.  He stressed the importance of having personal preparedness programs, and had available information to help us to do that.  Because of the programs in place, Rockwall County has been named a "Severe Weather Ready Community".  Thanks to Joe for a very informative program!

Our speaker this week was Patricia Batsell from Lakepointe Medical Center.  She is a registered nurse and is director of ICU and the Cardiovascular and Stroke Center Program.  She stressed the importance of getting medical care as soon as possible in the event of a stroke because there is a very small window of time to treat stroke victims.  Since stroke is the third leading cause of death and is the largest cause of disability in the US, this was extremely important information.  Thanks to Mrs. Batsell for the great program.
