October 15, 2020 meeting

Our meeting last week was another zoom meeting and our speaker was Uma Karki from Kathmandu Nepal. She runs an orphanage (Nepal Prerana Samaj) and cares for several children who, without her would not have survived. She shared with us the hardships they have endured during the present pandemic, and in the aftermath of the earthquakes that previously hit the area. We have submitted a District grant to help her in her work. Great program!

We had our District Governor John Moser visit this morning virtually.  We heard about ways to grow our membership, how to promote our club, and the importance of foundation giving, plus a lot of other great information.  Our club made a donation of $200 to Polio Plus, which is Trudy Moser's focus this year.  Thanks to our District Govrnor and his wife for visiting our club.

August 15, 2019 meeting

At our meeting last week, we heard from Troy Brakefield of the Greenville Noon Rotary Club. He explained to us how their “Haunted Landmark” has been such a success. All members of the club pitch in in some way, whether it is making props, scenery, makeup & costumes for the actors, or providing dinner for all the volunteers. This will be their 8th year in having a haunted house in the old Post Office building that they purchased. Last year they made $14,000 that was split between their foundation and scholarships. This is a very well received event that people in the Greenville and surrounding areas look forward to each year. It begins on Friday the end of October and runs for two weeks. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Troy at TheHauntedLandmark.com.

Mary Johnson

Posted on Feb 21, 2019
At our last meeting we heard from Mary Johnson about Housewarmers. She & Blair took over this business that covers Royse City, Fate, Union Valley, Rowlett area, Lavon area, and McClendon-Chisholm area. This is a new resident welcome service that is also a data tool for city services. Mary likes to call it a “Traveling Chamber of Commerce”. This welcome bag contains letters from the Mayor, and other city officials according to the area where they live along with ads from businesses. The first 6 months after a person moves, they spend more money on their homes than later on. They need to know where the goods and services in their area are located. Their goal is to get people to connect with their community. This is a wonderful service for our community—thank you Mary for sharing what you do with us!

July 19th meeting

At our last meeting, we were privileged to hear from County Commissioner David Magness. David told us about the proposed expansion of the County jail that will have a decision forthcoming in mid-August. The County jail is half of the county’s budget, so this is a very important project that is being considered. The Open Space project is also being considered. More large areas are needed to give the county the “green space” that is wanted by many residents. The last and probably the subject that generated the most questions, was the roads. Mr. Magness provided each with a map of the projects that are under construction and those that still to come. We will have a lot of changes coming, some in the very near future! Thanks David for giving us the update we needed to hear!!

April 20, 2017 meeting

The Royse City Rotary Club was privileged to have Attorney Susan Satterwhite as our speaker today. Susan gave us all a check list of things we all need to do in order to have our affairs in order for the remainder of our lives. One of the most important documents she recommended was to have a Statutory Durable Power of Attorney for our legal and financial affairs. She also recommended a Medical Power of Attorney and a Directive to Physician. We all need to get things in order so that our family does not have problems after our death. The last thing Susan suggested was to make a list of your personal belongings with who you want to get certain items and to write a family history including important dates and information concerning your family that could be hard to find at a later date. This was a very informative meeting and we want to thank Susan for her expertise. Thank you!!

April 13, 2017 meeting

At our last meeting, we heard from our own Lucille Bell, Executive Director of CASA for Rockwall and Kaufman counties. Lucille gave us some startling statistics about child abuse: in 2016 2200 children died, 58,644 children were abused, 60% of children in CPS care are 6 and under, 48,000 children in child protective services. CASA acts for the child and can only enter a case when the court appoints a CPS case to them. This is the 25th year for CASA that started in Oregon with a caring judge that saw that the child needed a voice. The Rockwall/Kaufman office served 190 children last year. They currently have 86 volunteers that work to help the children in our area. Please consider helping them by attending their car show on May 21 in the Harbor, or attending their Clay Shoot on August 26 in Scurry, or maybe by becoming a CASA volunteer yourself! Thank you Lucille for a great meeting.

Program, February 4, 2016

At our last meeting, we heard from two of our Interact students Ximena Martinez and Lauren Huddin that attended the Human Rights Symposium put on by District 5810. They were told of many problems in the world that they were not aware existed. They found out about several different groups that are helping people around the world with everything from mobility to sex trafficking. They are collecting crutches, wheelchairs, and walkers to send to Africa for polio victims. If you have any of these items, please get in touch with Renee Wallace at the high school. At our last meeting, we heard from our own Clay Ellis about his trip to Scotland. Clay went on a hunting trip of a lifetime and was able to kill a red stag and a fallow buck, along with catching a beautiful rainbow trout. The meat from the animals was given to a local food pantry, but the horns are being mounted for Clay. We were able to see beautiful pictures of castles and the land of Scotland also. Thanks Clay for sharing your trip with all of us. The hunters are really jealous now!  Clay is pictured here with his lovely wife, Amy!

He also told us about the New Tasteful Place that will be coming in the future along with the Twelve Days of Christmas again this year. Speaker for our February 5, 2015 meeting

At our last meeting we heard from Kathy Brandon the “Happinesschick”.  She asked if we were chasing happy. Interesting thought, isn’t it. There is a difference between joy & happiness. Joy is the prospect of possessing what you desire; while happiness is a feeling. When you serve others, you automatically have joy!

Speaker for our January 22, 2015 meeting

Posted on Jan 26, 2015
At our last meeting we heard from Harold Magnum about sharpening our memory skills. He told us that every 52 minutes someone comes down with Alzheimer’s so we all need to work on increasing our mental capabilities.  Most of us are not increasing our brain on a regular basis; to do this we need to use more of our senses. This was a very interesting topic that many of us needed to hear. Thanks for the information, Harold.

"Sundiata" Ferguson, Life Architect

Trevon "Sundiata" Ferguson, self-proclaimed Life Architect spoke to the club on November 18, 2014. He mentioned how Rotary's support and involvement with the community soccer program was a major player in helping him make it out of the third world country he grew up in. His battle with Multiple Sclerosis, cancer, and being an amputee has enabled him to seek life with purpose. Sundiata's story is captured in his new book, The ABCs of Empowerment.

Meeting for August 2, 2012

Posted by Jacquelynn Gilbert on Aug 08, 2012

Last week we had the privilege of having two outstanding speakers. Rick Ostroski from First Methodist Church told us about the food pantry, Our Daily Bread, and how the demand for assistance is a growing concern in Rockwall County. Anyone that would like to continue making a contribution can still do so. Just bring your canned goods to our meeting and they will be delivered to the church. We also had the chance of hearing one of our former RYLA students, Ryon Phillips. Ryon has returned from a mission trip to Cambodia where he met with the children of Cambodia. He told a heart-wrenching story of a little boy in need of a wheelchair. Before the meeting was over, Ryon had a wheelchair thanks to Tom and Ginny Ryan and $120 to help get the chair to Cambodia. What a wonderful Rotarian meeting!!

Adoption Awareness Carnival

A great group of Rotarians came together after braving all sorts of traffic problems for a wonderful carnival for some very deserving children. It is always a heart-warming experience to serve these children and watch as perspective parents follow the children they would like to adopt. As of Monday, 4 children have definitely found parents, 15 others have been selected by 25 families who must go through additional studies. Thanks to all who made this happen!

At our last meeting we heard Cheryl Weaver of Women in Need, Rockwall. She told us that there are currently 70-100 women who come to the Women in Need in Rockwall. Most of these ladies’ spouses don’t want them to work so they are isolated from the rest of the community. A woman will leave 7 to 8 times before she is successful. Rockwall is an outreach office and the shelter that we have helped in the past is in Greenville. Thank you for a very enlightening program.
