Social at the Frazees
On 10/14 the Frazee's invited the members of the Richardson East Rotary Club to Mexican Fiesta to their beautiful home in Frisco. Members enjoyed delicious drinks from the bar and scrumptious Mexican food from Uncle Julio's prepared on the grill in the backyard. A lot of camaraderie and fun was enjoyed. Below follows a few pictures from the Fiesta.

Maurine Dickey speaking to our club

Maurine Dickey visited RERC to speak about Barbecue, Boots & Badges. On the picture she is receiving a certificate from club president D. Schieferstein showing that a donation was made for her to the wheelchair foundation for coming to speak to RERC.

Since 1941, the Dickey family has taken pride in serving slow-smoked barbecue in their local communities. Today, the Dickey family and its family of restaurants takes pride in serving those who serve our communities, local police and firefighters.  This evolution in community involvement and civic stewardship is Barbecue, Boots & Badges. The foundation, enthusiastically led by Maurine Dickey, supports local law enforcement, firefighters and their families. The foundation is national, yet the support is intensely local — benefiting law enforcement and firefighters who put their lives on the line every day, serving the public. This is a way for Dickey’s Barbecue to serve in return.

Barbecue, Boots & Badges also creates partnerships between law enforcement and communities that are crucial in orchestrating crime reduction programs and initiatives.

Successful NTGD for our Signature Project

North Texas Giving Day (NTGD) was a success for RERC, we received a total of $4,250 in donations that will go towards our Signature Project, an Inclusive playground at Cottonwood Park in Richardson.

Thanks to the help of our generous donors and supporters RERC has raised a total of $31,250 since our kick-off this summer. With the NTGD donations we took another big step at reaching our target of $250,000 to make the Cottonwood Park an Inclusive playground.

We would also like to thank SAGE, the RISD Council of PTA's organization for Special and Gifted Education for their support in promoting NTGD and the Inclusive Playground to their constituency.

The next opportunity to support our efforts will be a special meal and entertainment hosted by Wildflower Patio and Grill on Tuesday, Oct. 10. This popular restaurant at the II Creeks area (formerly Marcus Cafe) will have a happy hour, fixed price three-course meal and entertainment by Ellis Island with a portion of all proceeds going to the Inclusive Playground. This would make a great date night for a good cause. Watch for details soon.

Improvement of quality of life for those affected by acquired brain injury
Valerie Gotcher, MS, CCC-SLP – Founder & Executive Director
Valerie earned a Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of North Texas in 2004. She has worked in a variety of acute care and outpatient hospital settings serving the needs of adults with acquired brain injury and other neurological disorders. Valerie is responsible for the incorporation of BIND in late 2011 and later the receipt of 501(c)(3) status in February 2012. She is the Executive Director of BIND and is a member of the Board of Directors for the International Brain Injury Clubhouse Alliance. She has been married for 15 years, has 2 children and 5 pets. She enjoys travel, reading and yoga.

The objectives of BIND include reducing the severity of depression, increasing return to gainful employment or productive community volunteering in survivors, and improvement of quality of life for those affected by acquired brain injury. BIND empowers members to maximize their strengths while developing strategies to meet personal goals for community reintegration, and provides a necessary link in the rehabilitative process that assist one in transitioning from therapy to the community upon discharge. This bridge helps the member maintain and improve abilities obtained through the difficult rehabilitative process.
