Southlake Rotarian Randy McCauley: Recipient of the PHF RUBY pin

story thumbnail
Southlake Rotarian and Board Member John Pichler awarded Southlake Rotarian, Randy McCauley with the PHF+7 RUBY Lapel pin, a Multiple Paul Harris Fellow pin.

The Paul Harris Fellow is the highest acknowledgment that a Club can bestow on an individual. What is less known about the RUBY pin, equivalent to eight PHFs, is that very few Rotarians are recipients.

The Paul Harris Fellow – Ruby Pin, was awarded to Randy in recognition of his support to the humanitarian and educational objects of The Rotary Foundation.

A Multiple Paul Harris Fellow RUBY pin, such as that conferred to Southlake Rotarian Randy McCauley, signifies a Paul Harris Fellow who has contributed as a donor at least $9,000 to the Paul Harris Foundation.  Here is additional information about the PHF’s:

The Rotary Foundation transforms gifts into projects that change lives both close to home and around the world. As the charitable arm of Rotary, it taps into a global network of Rotarians who invest0 their time, money, and expertise into our priorities, such as eradicating polio and promoting peace. Foundation grants empower Rotarians
to approach challenges such as poverty, illiteracy, and malnutrition with sustainable solutions that leave a lasting impact.

We thank you, Randy, for demonstrating in your life and vocation a commitment to helping persons in need here and around the world. Please accept our sincere congratulations and appreciation for the support of the Rotary Foundation.

Our Club also enjoyed Randy’s presentation entitled “Economic “Wipeout!” Ahead, or Some Tasty Waves?” As President and CEO of Providence Bank in Texas, Randy McCauley has his fingers on the economic pulse of North Texas and his eyes on the horizon beyond it. As Randy likes to put it, "Surfing economic waves, accepting that there will be some crashes, but always looking ahead for the next big roller to break!" Randy presented an excellent and entertaining overview of the "waves" we're experiencing today in our economy, and what he suspects will happen next.

It was a beautifully sunny day and the day following the Carroll Dragons football game  ---so we expected a lot of trash.  But, truly, it was not so bad!

A BIG thank you to those who weathered the trash: Lisa McBee, Rodney Hall, Jon Glover, Tim Scheutz and Henry Hubble.

We found some fascinating trash, as usual, including several Carroll Dragon’s football handclappers, a Dragon’s flag, $1 bill, donuts covered with ants, football mouthpiece and numerous facemasks. We gathered about 20 gallons of trash!

Southlake Rotarian Joe Mattioli

story thumbnail

Our own Southlake Rotarian, Joe Mattioli!  Congratulations, Joe on your accomplishment in making the big event, Music City Grand Prix, a reality and great success!

Music City Grand Prix wasn't a race but a party, and Nashville does those well

Gentry Estes

Nashville Tennessean

August 9th, 2021

That was something else, wasn’t it?

The kind of crazy, untamed enjoyment that comes with seeing race cars zip through hairpin turns on the same downtown streets we regularly commute — though, you'd hope, a bit slower.

Look, honey! That crash was where we tailgate for Tennessee Titans games!

Sunday afternoon’s (deep breath) inaugural Big Machine IndyCar Music City Grand Prix (exhale) represented a new treat for our city. Maybe it wasn't great racing with all the caution flags, but for the most part, this weekend was a success.

Because it wasn't about a race anyway. It was about the spectacle.

"For the first crack at it as an event, this was pretty freaking awesome," driver James Hinchcliffe said. "... This town knew that we were here, and it looked like it loved that we were here."

Over three days, more than 100,000 people withstood brutal summer heat. They packed grandstands and stood shoulder to shoulder on ramps in Nissan Stadium, and I’d bet the vast majority didn’t know much about the drivers they were watching, including Marcus Ericsson from Sweden, the eventual winner.

Nashville loves NASCAR and football and these days maybe even hockey. But outside of a rooting interest in local product Josef Newgarden, Music City isn’t much of an IndyCar hotbed – I mean, is there another in the country besides Indianapolis?

A big party downtown, though? We can do that.

“It can’t just be a race. It has to be an event, OK? And nobody throws a party like Nashville,” said Joe Mattioli, who watched Sunday with his wife while attending a rooftop event at The Joseph Hotel.

Mattioli wasn’t just any racegoer. He’s the former president of Pocono Raceway, and he has a history with Nashville and at the Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville. He understands this city and how to promote an event here.

Remember the DukesFest years ago at the Fairgrounds, celebrating the Dukes of Hazzard? That was him. He has raced school buses and mascots and even pastors on golf carts with jugs of water on the back. Whoever went faster without spilling the water would earn a church donation.

“The whole idea (of promotion) is to get people there, and generally they’re going to find something they like,” Mattioli said. “But you’ve got to get them there to begin with.”

And that was the inspiration behind this IndyCar race – Mattioli’s idea.

Joe Mattioli attended Sunday's Big Machine IndyCar Music City Grand Prix in Nashville, a race that started as an idea he had in 2007. Grand Prix CEO Matt Crews and his team helped make it a reality in 2021.

Going back to 2007, Mattioli tried unsuccessfully at least twice to start the race that finally came to life Sunday.

Each attempt was derailed, basically, by bad timing. The Nashville flood in 2010 halted the first try. Efforts were redoubled in 2015, leading to serious progress. But Nashville's mayor, Megan Barry, ended up resigning in scandal, and “the political climate was not real stable” for a big event, Mattioli said.

Much like the ever-present talk about NASCAR returning to the Fairgrounds, the possibility of an IndyCar race in Nashville was out there for so long that it ceased appearing all that possible anymore.

And then, it happened.

Sunday's race materialized largely through the persistence of Music City Grand Prix CEO Matt Crews, who’d worked previously with Mattioli, and his team.

“I came up with the idea, OK, but they got it done,” Mattioli said. “So they deserve the credit. I’m just thrilled."

Now 68, Mattioli is living in suburban Dallas, working as a consultant. He sure wasn’t going to miss Nashville’s first IndyCar race and road race, though: “It’s like I’m going to my daughter’s wedding but somebody else is paying for it.”

Was a fun weekend for a wedding party.

In Nashville, they usually are.

Passing of the Gavel Ceremony

Southlake Rotarian and former District Governor Jim Giffin inducted Lisa as the new President as well as those present of her Board Members.

President Dave Harrow passed the gavel to incoming President, Lisa McBee, for 2021-2022 at a Happy Hour at Anamia’s in Southlake.   President Dave provided a summary of the awesome things our Club accomplished in the wake of COVID-19, a worldwide pandemic.  President Dave promised incoming President Lisa McBee that he would assist her in any way he can in her navigation in her new role as the Rotary Club of Southlake’s incoming President.

President Lisa McBee stated:  “I am very honored to serve our Club this year as President and look forward to sharing my vision for the upcoming year during my tenure at our July 9th meeting at Timarron. I want to now take this opportunity to thank President Dave Harrow for his year of exceptional service to the club and to each of us during a pandemic that pervaded and interrupted not only our personal lives and the very world itself, but also our calling and mission in continuing and progressing as Rotarians in making our community and world a better place to live."

Southlake Rotarians are excited for the opportunities that will present themselves this year under President Lisa’s tenure.

Update from Abbey Walsh, our Global Scholar in Brighton, UK,

story thumbnail

An update from the Rotary Club of Southlake's  Global Scholar, Abbey Walsh:

"Classes and final assignments were completed by the end of May and now I'm embarking on my primary research for my dissertation. Because of COVID I'll be engaging with all of the participants online, but I'm choosing to see this as a good opportunity because now I'll be able to connect with people from many different places. My research is going to focus on how people understand their own power and under what circumstances people may choose to give up or dismantle their power in the pursuit of social change. I'll be staying in Brighton until September to work on my dissertation and then I plan to move back to Washington, DC.

The past couple of months in Brighton have been really lovely now that the weather has gotten warmer and restrictions have eased up a bit. It's a really beautiful place to live! We have access to amazing hiking trails as well as the ocean, so I've been spending a lot of time outside. The ocean is quite cold here (about 50 degrees F) but I've started going on short swims with friends because there are supposedly a lot of benefits to swimming in cold water. It's quite a shock to the system when you get in but feels really nice afterward! It's been a great new experience.

Hoping all is well with you and the rest of the Rotary Club!  ---- Abbey Walsh

John Huffman: Newly Elected as Southlake Mayor

Newly elected Southlake Mayor John Huffman has a lot on his plate. On the heels of a sharply divided and contentious election, Mayor Huffman knows he must restore unity within our community in order to keep Southlake moving forward as a highly desirable place to live. Tomorrow we’ll be amongst the first groups post-election to whom he’ll be giving a PowerPoint presentation of his challenges, goals and plans for our City’s future.

Update from DFWAccelerate

Southlake Rotarians and our community: You may recall our speaker from March 19, 2021, Lindsay Hubbell, who came to speak to us on the “The state of Entrepreneurship in Fort Worth and surrounding Tarrant County.”

As the current Director of Operations for AccelerateDFW as well as an attorney and a Master of Architecture graduate student, Lindsay provided information about a wonderful instrument for entrepreneurs, AccelerateDFW, a nonprofit organization committed to empower and support entrepreneurs and start up companies.

AccelerateDFW has supported entrepreneurs for 20 years through individual mentorship, workshops, storytelling initiatives and the entrepreneurship toolkit available at https://www.acceleratedfw.org/web/idea-now-what.  AccelerateDFW has also been a long time partner and organizer of Global Entrepreneurship Week in Fort Worth.

Today, we received an update from Lindsay that DFWAccelerate are not only reopening after COVID, but are also starting a new free series, “Business Law for Business Experts,” presented by attorney Justin Malone, who will share information on “Why, When and How to Incorporate Your Business,” which meets biweekly on Friday mornings at 8:30 starting June 25.  All business experts are invited to join AccelerateDFW for coffee, donuts and vital legal information regarding their businesses.

Grant Price: Mentalist/Magician

Southlake Rotarian John Pichler hit the nail on the head. From a very young age, Grant Price has been fascinated with magic and its ability to instill awe in people of all ages. Even when Grant was seven-years-old people would laugh, sit in stunned silence, or even scream in response to his performances.

This is the fuel of Grant’s performances – reminding people to seek and explore wonder in every part of life. Grant Price presents a show that amazes, yes, but more importantly, that gives delight and wonder to his audience.

Many, many thanks to Rod Hall for his generous sponsorship of this program. Without a doubt,  all of us have been thinking about what we saw—or what we thought we saw

Attached is the half-page “Thank You” ad featured in the April issue of "Southlake Style" magazine. Deliveries began today to every household and business in Southlake. The ad can be found on Page 75, on the outside column of the right-facing page.

Freedom Hospice: Perfect Christmas Gift!

We are FULL-SPEED to Christmas!  This year, finding a great and last-minute gift does not require standing in long lines at the mall!  We have the perfect solution – give the gift of great recipes!  Freedom Hospice has published a wonderful cookbook full of 503 family recipes from staff, patient families, volunteers, and friends of the agency.

It is beautifully bound and will make a great gift for anyone who enjoys good and home-style recipes!  The proceeds from sales will go to provide last wishes as well as other extras for our patients and their families!  So, you will actually be giving 2 gifts with each purchase – one for your recipient and one that will positively impact the life of terminally ill patients!  What better gift could there be?

Please see the attached flyer for more information.  Southlake Rotarian Jon Glover, the Manager of Benevolent Services at Freedom Hospice, is happy to deliver them to your home or office, or if you prefer, ship them to you or your recipients.

You can complete the order form attached to the flyer and e-mail back to Jon Glover, or just e-mail Jon at jglover@freedom-hospice.com with  number you wish to purchase.  We appreciate your support of this worthy cause!

Southlake Rotarians Ring the Bells for the Salvation Army's Red Kettle Initiative

Kudos and enormous thanks to the Southlake Rotarians who participated in the annual Salvation Army’s “Kettle Campaign,”/bell ringing on December 5th and December 12th!

Major David A. Leonard of the Salvation Army reported that our Club/bell ringers raised $856.28 on December 5th, the largest single kettle income for that day, also surpassing any single kettle income day thus far this year. In large part, we believe Jon Glover aka Santa Claus had a lot to do with that overflowing kettle!  The kids loved that Santa appeared in front of Hobby Lobby in Southlake!

We are looking forward to hearing from Major Leonard on the December 12th kettle income!

The Red Kettle Campaign — which runs from Thanksgiving to Christmas — typically accounts for about one-third of the total amount of money raised by the Salvation Army in an entire year.

This year was a bit different from others in that volunteers wore masks and practiced social distancing.  And, an alternative to cash or coins were offered, with donors encouraged to use QR codes, which were placed on the kettles. The code can be scanned using the camera on your phone, which takes you to a site to make a contactless donation to the Salvation Army through Apple Pay or Google Pay.

For those who have a volunteer heart, you can also be a bell ringer from home! If you go to virtualredkettlentx.org, you can host a virtual kettle and share across social media to raise money. Thank you so much, Southlake Rotarians, for helping put this great team of volunteers together and helping the Salvation Army meet the needs of our community.

In Summary:

Jon Glover brought along the Freedom Hospice's recipe book, which is a great gifting idea for those who wish to avoid shopping and enduring long lines --- and possible COVID exposure. Freedom Hospice has published a wonderful cookbook full of 503 family recipes from staff, patient families, volunteers and friends of the agency.  It is beautifully bound and will make a great gift for anyone who enjoys good and home-style recipes!  The proceeds from sales will go to provide last wishes as well as other extras for our patients and their families!  So you will actually be giving 2 gifts with each purchase – one for your recipient and one that will positively impact the life of terminally ill patients!  PLEASE see the attached flyer for more information.  Jon says they are also accepting payment via Venmo and says he is  happy to deliver them to club meetings, deliver them to your home or office, or if you prefer, ship them to you or your recipients (for a shipping charge).  Please share the attachment with your email contacts, networks and FB friends.

Sean reported that we still have a few slots left for the Salvation Army Bell Ringing at Kroger in Southlake for 12/5/2020 and 12/12/2020. For those of you who have not yet signed up, please email Sean to see what slots need filled. Arlin reports there will be fines for those who haven't signed up yet (LOL).

Sean also delivered a summary on status of the Dictionary project, which we expect to revisit in January once the kids return to school.

John reminded members of the Paul Harris Foundation matching contribution opportunity which ends at the end of January.

John also provided a DPS sponsorship packet so we can all do our part in targeting past sponsors and new sponsors  --- to raise scholarship money for the college-bound children of our police officers/firefighters.  We  currently have $3,150 in DPS sponsorships and would like to match the $16,000 we raised last year.  Jim Giffin later reported that Pieter Andres is on board for a $5,000 donation, although it was not clarified whether that if for a DPS sponsorship or other projects. (Jim?).  John will be sending out an email with the DPS sponsorship packet so we can all take advantage of getting out there and raising some money.

Dan reported our current membership at 24, down from 28 last year with no new members! This is a call to RECRUIT, members!

Dan also reported on the state of our budget in which we will apparently break even as of the end of year. As of today, we are meeting back at Timarron, our home base! Our Club is currently charged for 18 Timarron meals at $18.75/meal. This week only 9 of our members attended so our Club will eat the difference --- (forgive the pun) --- in the meantime until it can be discussed at our next Board Meeting. Please remember that all members are invited to attend our Board Meetings to provide input! The Club also discussed boxing up any leftovers to be delivered to our fire department, as Sue used to do.

Jim reported on the District/RI, announcing that all in-person RI meetings have been cancelled and that all meetings are being conducted virtually. He also announced that the District has some money left and that Jan 31, 2021 is the deadline for submitting scholarship/project grant applications within our District. We will continue our push for our scholar, Abby Shaw, in her international studies.

Arlin reported on the “Coat Drive” initiative (aka “Toasty Toes”) that we are undertaking with the Trophy Club Rotary Club. We need new or gently used/washed coats, hats, scarves, socks, mittens, gloves, sweaters, sleeping bags, blankets, heated glove/sock inserts that will be distributed to the Presbyterian Night Shelter on Jan. 10th.

Arlin will be sending an email to Club Members regarding the various drop-off points for making such donations, to include Sean’s office, John’s office, among other places. Arlin also made a SHOUT OUT to all members, requesting they like/share/comment on all Club postings on our website, FB page, and other pages, to grow our audience and have more of an impact.

Keep Southlake Beautiful - Trash Pick Up Day

Fellow Rotarians, November 21, 2020 (Saturday) is litter pickup day along Silicon Drive in Southlake.  Please join us at 10am in the Dragon Stadium parking lot.  Bring a trash bag and work gloves if you have them, else some loaners may be available.

Great camaraderie AND you get to keep anything you find (free mementos of our time together!).  There’s a lot of trash that’s accumulated since our last pickup in early fall, but if enough members pitch in, we should be able to finish by 10:45.

Consider this a service opportunity to clean up the mean streets of Southlake! Great family friendly activity and if your kids or others need service hours, we are happy to oblige!!!! ***Brunch to follow if enough people are interested-location TBD***

Former Dallas Cowboy Cory Proctor: MORE THAN THE SUM OF HIS ROLES

This is your invitation to come to our Southlake Rotary Club Meeting on Friday, November 20, 2020 at 12:00 pm, at Wildwood Grille in Southlake, TX --- and meet former Dallas Cowboy, Cory Proctor, who has recently moved to Trophy Club!!!  Cory’s topic will be “MORE THAN THE SUM OF HIS ROLES.” From NFL Offensive Lineman to husband and father, professional speaker, and financial investment advisor, Cory has held many titles and roles — but what separates him from the pack is his drive to help others win. Above everything, Cory is a warrior: for his team, his family, his clients, and his faith. Cory will be talking about retirement projection planning and HIS story.

In 2005, he was picked up by the Detroit Lions practice squad. Seizing yet another opportunity he wasn’t expecting, he made the most of it. Procter worked hard, focused, and pushed himself forward. One yard at a time. Literally overnight, Cory ended up in Texas playing for the Dallas Cowboys. His tenure with the Cowboys would last 5 seasons and span two monumental stadiums. In 2007, Cory was introduced to his wife through mutual friends, and Megan has been by his side ever since. Together, both Texas transplants, they made the Lone Star State their home, growing their football family.

Cory continued to soar, until 2010, after moving to Miami. During game play on an oppressive night in Miami, he had a massive and career ending injury. Procter did not know that was his new reality, that his time in the sun had come to an end. As he stumbled through the next few years, seven surgeries, tons of rehab, moving back and forth across the US to continue his football dream, he emerged a broken man, struggling to redefine himself. He and Megan began a family in 2011, with Cory literally limping down the aisle.

Cory and Megan began 2015 with the birth of their daughter, Grace. But soon after this joyous occasion, the Procters had to endure one of the greatest challenges of their lives. In the spring of that same year, cancer struck the family and shook their world.  That was the moment. The moment that would come to end one chapter of Cory’s story, and open another brighter one. Cory’s football dream had come to an end, the family suffered a loss, and he was not sure which way to walk, which way his path was supposed to go. It was during this painful time, that family friends introduced the Procters to their church. He was reluctant to go, recalcitrant towards God, still brewing from the long, rocky road he had endured since Miami. But standing there that day in church, the sun shone upon him again. His spiritual rebirth had begun, and it brought the core of who Cory is back to the forefront.

Regarding his professional role as Registered Financial Investment Adviser, Cory says “ Work hard, play hard“Finances shouldn’t run your life. They’re a tool to help you live the life you were designed for.”  Cory’s goal is simple: to equip and empower you to live life to it’s fullest.

Join us at Wildwood Grill where we have a private room and meet Cory in person! For all other members, we’ll still be simulcasting the meeting on Zoom (Meeting ID 870 626 8978, Password 270112).

Donna Snow, TV celebrity on DIY Network’s  “Texas Flip and Move”

Please come and be our guest! You won’t want to miss this Rotary Club of Southlake meeting! Donna Snow will be our speaker and we are so excited to have her speak on her topic: “What are you doing with your life to make a difference while never forgetting to take care of yourself.”

Donna Snow is half of the Snow Sisters Texas team that was featured on Texas Flip N Move on DIY for over 13 seasons.

Donna is a third-generation house mover.  The moving company began with her grandfather C.A. Snow back in 1942, with her Daddy taking over in 1966.  As each of the Snow kids graduated high school, they came into the family business full time. She has worked with her Daddy (H.D. Snow & Son House Moving) ever since she was big enough to carry a jack handle. And like she says "All I ever wanted to be was a house mover just like my Daddy.”

That is not all that Donna is about though. She is very active with the North Texas High School Rodeo Association as well as helping Veterans any chance she can. She is also a registered Amateur radio operator operating under the sign: KI5LRX.

In May 2012 they got the first phone call from a Television Production company who had this crazy idea to put together a TV show about buying a house at auction, moving it to a renovation yard, remodeling it, selling it and see who can make the most money. As you know Texas Flip N Move was started, and was the number one show on DIY network, and Donna was blessed to be a part of all 13 seasons of the show.

"One of the greatest joys for me is getting to help families find a home, something that belongs to them that they can afford, kinda like owning a piece of the American dream.  But the absolute greatest joy is being able to work with my family, to see them every day of the work week.  That is what I call a blessing," Donna Snow.

Join us at Wildwood Grill where we have a private room and meet Donna in person! For all other members, we’ll still be simulcasting the meeting on Zoom (Meeting ID 870 626 8978, Password 270112).

John Israel: The Mr. Thank You Project

Thunderous applause and a BIG resounding “THANK YOU” to John Israel (aka as Mr. Thank You) for his awesome Zoom presentation at our June 19th Rotary meeting.  John, the ‘gratitude salesman,’  taught us the importance of ‘elevating gratitude’ every day! John writes 5 handwritten ‘thank you,’ cards to people he comes across every single day ---- that is a whopping 1,825 cards per year!!!

John inspired us to make ‘gratitude’ intentional and to remind the people with whom we come into contact that they are valued, acknowledged, seen, and that they matter. He reminded us that actions always speak louder than words, quoting Ralph Waldo Emerson, as follows: “Your actions speak so loudly, I can not hear what you are saying.” Some of the links John shared with us as we navigate in our life’s journeys of learning the importance of gratitude:

Southlake Rotary Club Recognizes Incoming President Dave Harrow as the Rotarian of the 2nd Quarter

Southlake Rotary Club Recognizes incoming Rotary President Dave Harrow as “Rotarian of the Quarter – 2nd Quarter of 2020!!!!

Under the auspices of the 2019-20 Rotary International’s presidential theme, “Rotary Connects the World,” the Southlake Rotary Club initiated selection and recognition each quarter our of our "Rotarian of the Quarter" Club Advocate. With the theme of ‘connection’ to our communities and helping those in need” at the heart of each Rotarian’s service commitment, the Board of the Southlake Rotary has chosen incoming President Dave Harrow, as our 2nd quarter “Rotarian of the Quarter.” Dave exemplifies the values of Rotary, including service above self, fellowship, leadership, and a passion for others.

Dave Harrow readily admits he knew little about Rotary when he became a member in 2019.     “The reason I joined the Rotary was as a way to network with other like-minded professionals,” he said.

So, he must have been wondering how he landed at Lone Star PETS Training Program a year later, not only surrounded by like-mined professionals, but professionals preparing to lead their local clubs.

PETS – as in President-Elect Training Seminar -- is where Dave found himself Feb. 27-March 1 at the DFW Hyatt Hotel. Because of his commitment to preparing and becoming the President-Elect, Dave Harrow has been named the Southlake Club Rotarian of the Quarter.

“I think he is a great Rotarian that will be a good leader for the upcoming year,” President Dana White said.

Dave said that while originally looking to network, it did not take long for him to see Rotary for its far-reaching scope.

“I soon discovered it was so much more than just a networking group,” Dave said. “The Rotary is the perfect venue for me to give back to the community I live in while enjoying the camaraderie of positive and active individuals.”

Originally from California, Dave graduated from the University of the Redlands with a degree in management. Dave started out in the recruiting industry, a business he learned from his father who owned a staffing company, a company Dave joined after serving in the U.S. submarine force for the United States Navy.

The business brought Dave to Texas in 1995 to serve as Director. He was later named Vice President, and in technical recruiting, he specialized in staffing for the aircraft and aerospace industry. After 33 years, Dave retired and formed a RE/MAX real estate business in Southlake with his wife, Lisa, (also a member of the Southlake Rotary Club), fulfilling a long-time goal to work together.

The skills Dave acquired in the recruiting industry have served him well in the real estate business, resulting in what he terms, “a smooth transition.” Those skill will continue to serve Dave as he prepares to become President of the Southlake Rotary Club.

“It is especially rewarding to see Rotarians from all walks of life come together to provide Serve Above Self and be a part of something that is much bigger than yourself,” Dave said. “It also means that you are a member of a diverse, worldwide team whose members together have provided extraordinary service to humanity.”

Dave also expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve as the next club president. “I have some big shoes to fill as Dana has done a wonderful job in her role as president,” he said. As for his goals, he said he’d like to continue Dana’s efforts to grow the club’s membership. “In addition, I have been thinking that it might be interesting to team up with another club and work on a bigger project that could benefit both communities that our clubs are a part of.”

Dave and Lisa have been married for more than 30 years. They have two sons, Zach, 28, living in Seattle along with his fiancé, Haley, and Greg, 24, graduating from Texas State this summer.     #rotaryconnectstheworld #wearerotary #peopleofaction #southlakerotaryclub

People of Action -  Covid-19 Response

The Rotary Club of Southlake, aka “people of action,” cheerfully participated in several service projects in response to the COVID-19 crisis.

First, our Club stepped up to the call when the Presbyterian Night Shelter had to suspend volunteer services,  and were working with a skeleton crew to limit exposure to guests, staff and volunteers.  The Shelter was in desperate need for sandwiches to pass out to the homeless.  So, our “People of Action,” answered that call, making 100’s of sandwiches for several weeks.

Additionally, our club donated $800 to the North Texas Food Bank, and $800 to Community Storehouse to help them replenish their supplies for assisting those in need.

The Southlake Rotary Club also participated in our Districts Rise event and donated $2200, which was matched by the District 5790, making our club’s donation $4400.00.  A BIG “thank you” to Southlake Rotarian & Past President, Marshall Ryan, for his challenge in matching our members total donations up to $1000!!!!  We might be small, but we are MIGHTY!!!!! #rotaryconnectstheworld #wearerotary #peopleofaction #southlakerotaryclub

From our beloved visiting Rotarian Tim Schuetz:

Here is one of the most informative podcast (28mins) about the Virus I have heard...which is good for 4 year olds and 80 year olds.

Unless you have already heard this.. you will learn a lot about this Virus and others.

Hope all are doing well... and as Ft Worth's official court order is called... "Y'ALL STAY AT HOME"

PS. After Kalai, Cris and I came back to Hong Kong on March 20th., we were quarantined for 14 days... HARD QUARANTINE.... with tags and GPS monitoring/tracking.
We had come back from New Zealand  which had 10 people with the virus and still had to be quarantined  TODAY,, after 14 days, I went out on the streets of Hong Kong
and almost everything is open...(except schools which have been and continue to be close since Jan 24.)  I can even eat at a restaurant.

HOWEVER.... almost everyone wears a mask... and Hong Kong with a population of  8 million has only had 4 deaths and about 800 cases (of which the last 250 or
so came from Hong Kong citizen returning from American or Europe in the last 20 days.

Please stay safe...

Southlake Rotary Club Recognizes Dr. Sean Cerone as “Rotarian of the Quarter – 1st  Quarter of 2020!!!!

Under the auspices of the 2019-20 Rotary International’s presidential theme, “Rotary Connects the World,” the Southlake Rotary Club initiated selection and recognition each quarter our of our "Rotarian of the Quarter" Club Advocate. With the theme of ‘connection’ to our communities and helping those in need” at the heart of each Rotarian’s service commitment, the Board of the Southlake Rotary has chosen Dr. Sean Cerone, as our 1st quarter “Rotarian of the Quarter.” Sean exemplifies the values of Rotary, including service above self, fellowship, leadership, and a passion for others.

Last November, Sean Cerone hosted a party. It was an atypical party, considering nearly a dozen Southlake Rotarians were invited to his dental office to affix Rotary stickers onto hundreds of dictionaries to be distributed to area schools. While Rotarians did the light work, pasting stickers onto books, Sean did the heavy lifting. He not only led the endeavor, he unloaded boxes full of dictionaries and hauled them into his office for processing.

When the work was done, Sean treated everyone to pizza. But the real treat for Rotarians was the opportunity to work with Sean, a dedicated Rotarian who, as a result of his leadership, has been named Southlake Rotarian of the Quarter. “I think there were multiple other members that contributed more to our club in that time frame than myself, but I humbly and gratefully accept the recognition,” Sean said.

Sean, a dentist based in Southlake since 1996, was a charter member of the Southlake Rotary Club, extending to 2004. Since then, he has been involved in most every event the club has sponsored. In addition to his work with dictionary distribution, he has participated in DPS Appreciation Day, Salvation Army Bell Ringing, and trash pick-up. He also has served as club president, secretary, and sergeant-at-arms.

Club President Dana White stated: “I nominated Sean as our club’s 1st Quarter Rotarian of the Quarter to recognize his phenomenal commitment, diligence and dedication to the education and literacy of our area children. Sean goes above and beyond to ensure that every 3rd grader receives his or her own dictionary, which they are very thrilled to receive. Spearheading numerous projects, including arranging our club’s ringing of the bells for the Salvation Army, and bringing his children to help on Saturday trash-pick up’s, I applaud Sean for all the work he does on behalf of Rotary and our community.”

Although Sean came to Rotary independent of family Rotary connections, it is the relationships that most appeal to him while working in service to others. “I truly enjoy the relationships we build with each other in our Southlake Rotary Club,” he said. “I like best that we have a relatively small club. A somewhat small group of “charter” members and a desire to grow the club into a larger community.”

During Sean’s time as president, the Southlake Rotary Club was “recognized in the district for many of the projects we spearheaded,” Sean said. “For a club our size, we get a fair amount of recognition.”

Now, it’s Sean’s turn to be recognized. Congratulations, Dr. Sean Cerone, for earning the title, Rotarian of the Quarter. Please join us in congratulating Sean on his recognition as our “Rotarian of the Quarter” for the 1st Quarter of 2020! #wearerotary #peopleofaction #rotaryconnectstheworld

With the theme of ‘connection’ to our communities and helping those in need” at the heart of each Rotarian’s service commitment, the Board of the Southlake Rotary has chosen John Pichler, as our 4th quarter “Rotarian of the Quarter.” John exemplifies the values of Rotary, including service above self, fellowship, leadership, and a passion for others.

“If you want something done, ask a busy person,” is a popular mantra, but when it comes to the Southlake Rotary, asking a busy person is not necessary because John Pichler never has to be asked.  This busy person is a ready volunteer.  Because of this, John has been named Southlake Rotarian of the Quarter.

“He’s always so busy that I have no idea how he makes time for so much,” said Southlake Club President Dana White. “But he’s always the go-to person in our club, and it’s really nice.”

John has been a Rotarian for 21 years, beginning with his March 1998 membership in the Metroport Rotary Club. Fifteen years ago, he co-founded the Southlake Rotary Club, and between the two clubs, he has served as President, Treasurer, Sergeant-At-Arms, Foundation Chair, and Programs Manager, a position he currently holds.

Dana said the club has long been eager to recognize John as Rotarian of the Quarter but because he so often attends the club’s board meetings, he tends to request someone else be so honored. Fortunately, John was unable to attend a recent board meeting, so without his dissent, the board jumped on the opportunity to honor him. “It’s been a long time coming,” Dana said.

Along with Phyllis Catton, John recently co-chaired the 2019 Department of Public Safety Appreciation Event, the club’s largest fundraiser and the most successful on record. Not only did he co-chair the event, but as an owner of a small commercial sign company, he also provided the signage for the event. He founded Identitec in Southlake 22 years ago. Coupled with his desire to serve an organization that effects positive changes locally and globally, John enjoys the fellowship of other Rotarians.

John has married to his “ever supportive” wife, Sherry, for 38 years. They have two adult children and one grandchild. John is looking forward to one day scaling back his daily business responsibilities in order to travel and devote more time to Rotary.  Congratulations, John Pichler, Rotarian of the Quarter.

Please join us in congratulating John on his recognition as our “Rotarian of the Quarter” for the 4th Quarter of 2019! #wearerotary #peopleofaction #rotaryconnectstheworld

DPS Appreciation Night 2019

On September 28, 2019, the Southlake Rotary Club held its annual signature DPS Appreciation Day concurrently with Southlake’s DPS’ National Night Out.  We welcomed our community in a display of appreciation for our first responders. We heard from John Huffman, Southlake's Deputy Mayor Pro Tem, as well as Southlake's Police Chief James Brandon and Deputy Fire Chief Kurt Hall (who is also a Southlake Rotarian!).  Our Club’s President, Dana White, spoke to the gathered community, as well as our DPS Co-Chairs, John Pichler and Phyllis Catton. Meeting and mixing with our awesome First Responders, our Club provided complimentary food, face painting, a petting zoo, Carter’s Blood Bank for donating blood, and Child ID fingerprinting.

We are pleased to announce that we were able to raise a whopping $26,150 through our sponsors (listed below) which enabled us to confer $17,800 in scholarships to college-bound children of our police officers and firefighters. We also provided gift baskets of gift cards/certificates, each valuing over $3,000 to the Police Dept and Fire Dept's "Employee of the Year."

Pamela Foland: Five Things Your Pets Can Teach Children

Posted by Lisa McBee on Sep 20, 2019

Pamela Foland, published author, public speaker, pet care specialist and avid storyteller, provided our Club with wonderful insights into the value of caring for pets and how that can positively impact our lives and our children’s lives during her September 19th presentation.

Pamela’s delightful presentation, “Five Things Pet Can Teach Children”, demonstrated to us how pet owners can develop such virtuous traits of responsibility, patience, trust and respect, compassion, and self-esteem.

Many of us were able to buy one of her wonderful books, which she so graciously autographed. Thank you, Pamela and we hope you are able to visit us again!!!!

District Governor, Peter Scott Visits the Rotary Club of Southlake

Posted by Lisa McBee on Sep 13, 2019

Our new District Governor, Peter Scott, attended our Board Meeting on September 13, 2019 and also addressed our Club at our weekly meeting. He laid out his vision for Rotary International 2019-2020, discussing Rotary activities, and initiatives.

He eagerly wanted to hear from the Board about our club’s goals and plans, and shared ideas from other clubs he’s visited that have similar interests and challenges.

Referring to our Club as a “vibrant club,” Peter’s focus entailed the message that the District is here for our Club in advancing our initiatives, and that we are to acknowledge District 5790 as “customer service,” organization ----- as they enthusiastically aim to collaborate in advancing our goals.

A big “THANKS” to DG Peter Scott for his inspirational and insightful visit. #rotaryconnectstheworld #wearerotary #peopleofaction #DPSAppreciationDay #southlakerotaryclub

Doug Bryan: “Secrets to More Memorable Presentations”

Posted by Lisa McBee on Sep 06, 2019

Doug Bryan presented a wonderful, inspirational program today entitled “Secrets to More Memorable Presentations” at our September 6, 2019 meeting. As an active Rotarian of 28 years, Doug Bryan has sat through a lot of presentations.

After years of observation and experience, he has become a student of making presentations more entertaining as well as informative. Doug provided our Club with insights into making presentation, focusing not only on the delivery, but the subtle mechanics that make a presentation more enjoyable and memorable for the audience.

Topics covered included:

·         Engaging the audience
·         Importance of storytelling
·         Making the presentation visually appealing
·         Body language/use of gestures

Doug skillfully showed us that how we convey information is as important as what we actually say. Doug’s website can be found at http://www.InsightCollegFS.com. #rotaryconnectstheworld #wearerotary #peopleofaction

MaryLee Alford "The Educational Needs of the Children of the British Virgin Islands"

Posted by Lisa McBee on Aug 16, 2019
MaryLee Alford visited our Club on August 16, 2019, delivering an inspirational presentation of the ravaged British Virgin Islands in the wake of Hurricane Irma (a Category 5 storm) in 2017, which caused widespread destruction to these beautiful islands, destroying homes, tourist areas and schools.

MaryLee and her husband Carl, who are involved in numerous local community service organizations, are aficionados of sailing, and have traveled extensively throughout the BVI, falling in love with the people and places of the islands.

The Alford team is working towards creating partnerships to help with the educational needs of the children of BVI (schools, books, etc.), an integral component of revitalizing the islands. The Southlake Rotary Club is happy to partner with MaryLee & Carl Alford for this very worthy cause.

Thankfully, the British Virgin Islands were spared a direct hit by the recent Sept 1st storm, Hurricane Dorian, and suffered no major damage --- although, tragically, the Bahamas were not so fortunate.

We hope MaryLee and Carl will visit our Club again with updates! #rotaryconnectstheworld #wearerotary #peopleofaction

Retired Master Sgt. Jim Rodriguez: F.L.A.G.

Posted by Lisa McBee on Aug 09, 2019

What an absolute pleasure it was to have Retired Master Sgt. Jim Rodriguez present his inspirational and grand F.L.A.G. Program to our Rotary Club on August 9, 2019.  Jim demonstrated the magnitude of impact the F.L.A.G. (Fly Low And Gather) program has upon our schools and community.  F.L.A.G. is a non-profit organization founded in the Fall of 2010, dedicated to teaching school children the appropriate etiquette for respecting and handling the U.S. flag.

As founder and president of F.L.A.G., Jim’s mission is to “…instill patriotism and pride back into our schools, and to never forget those who fight for our freedom and this nation…” Jim's presentation was unquestionably as inspiring as it was historical.  Jim not only served our country for 21 years in the U.S. Air Force, he also has 40 years of combined managerial/supervisory and teaching/training experience. His activities in our community are numerous, including frequent keynote and motivational speaking engagements to such events as the Dallas City Hall’s US Army’s Birthday Celebration, the Denton Civil Air Patrol, and the national organization “Dreamers” in Fort Worth, to name a few.

Jim was an articulate, vibrant speaker, imparting numerous tidbits of history and patriotism and we hope he will come back and speak to us again!

President Dana White: New Rotary Year Roll-Out

Posted by Lisa McBee on Jul 19, 2019

Southlake Rotarian President Dana provided her vision for her goals for our club on July 19, 2019 for the new Rotary year. Hearkening back to the wonder in the days of Apollo 11, when astronaut Neil Armstrong stood ready to ‘open the door’ to set his feet upon the moon, Dana expressed the inspiration and imagination roused during this time in our country’s history.  Like Neil Armstrong, who  did not know exactly what was on the other side of the hatch door, but whose vision, inspiration and courage drove him intentionally forward, Dana invited Southlake Rotarians to use their inspiration and vision to facilitate the cause of serving others and putting service above self.

Emphasizing that each member has their own Rotary story, Dana summoned each member to discover what serving others personally means to that Rotarian, and to resolve how they will accomplish those individual goals. Providing a bit of her biographic background, Dana roused our Club to embrace Rotary’s goals and to make those personal aspirations as interpreted by each member, our own.

Dana communicated her organization of 7 committees and asked each member to participate in at least one or two, as follows:

1.         COMMUNITY SERVICE/SERVICE PROJECTS COMMITTEE – Arlin Gold-Stegmair will lead the effort in determining club projects that have broad interest, do the most good, give Rotary good visibility, and that attract new members.

2.         FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE – John Pichler, Michelle Davis & Phyllis Catton will co-chair the Fundraising Committee for our service projects which include DPS appreciation Day, Cioppino Night, food drives, winter clothing for the homeless, etc.

3.         MEMBERSHIP SERVICE/CLUB CULTURE COMMITTEE – Lisa McBee will lead the effort to implement club cohesiveness, generate a positive public image, through ‘card’ outreach, documenting club & member activities, posting upcoming events/programs & relating highlights of previous meetings/events on website/social media.

4.         ROTARY FOUNDATION &PROGRAMS– John Pichler will continue to educate members on the Foundation programs. John will also continue to organize programs/speakers which have broad interest for our Club.

5.         ROTARY ORIENTATION/INFO COMMITTEE – Jim Giffin will oversee orientation of new members during their first year, educating them on the privileges of Rotary membership, history of Rotary & activities of Rotary at all levels.

6.         INTERNATIONAL SERVICE PROGRAMS – Phyllis Catton will continue as Chair in this area of service, which includes the youth exchange program.

7.         YOUTH PROGRAMS – Sean Cerone and Kevin Archer were appointed to continue to oversee this committee which includes  dictionaries distribution to local schools, RYLA participation, etc.

Dana provided Sign-Up Sheets at the meeting and invited all members to sign up on as many committees as possible.

Dana also provided an overview of this years’ activities, including: DPS Appreciation Day; Keep Southlake Beautiful Quarterly Trash Pick Up; our Dictionary Drive Project; Salvation Army Bell Ringing in December; food/clothing drives; our Christmas Party; and our new Cioppino Night fundraiser festivities; Quarterly Happy Hours; Our Club’s sponsorship of the North Texas Shield Foundation, instituted by Peter Andries, which provides airfare for family members of fallen police and firemen in the area; and our participation in the Keller Club’s Field of Honor by purchasing flags for our Club’s veteran service members (Jack Cutshall, Dave Harrow, Marshall Ryan & Kurt Hall).

In her closing remarks, Dana shared some of her own recent health challenges and exhorted our Club to “walk through the door” of the unknown with her, just as Neil Armstrong did when he opened the hatch door to encounter the moon. Southlake Rotarians, let’s open that enigmatic door and reach for the moon this Rotary year!!!!  #wearerotary #rotaryconnectstheworld #peopleofaction

Passing of the Gavel & Classification Talks

Posted by Lisa McBee on Jun 28, 2019
Two of our new Rotarians presented their Classification talks on June 28th. “Classification” is basically Rotary terminology for your occupation. But in addition to telling us about their careers, members are also encouraged to share with the club a profile of their family, hobbies, highlights from their life history and anything else that helps us find out more about the person they are today.  Today we had the pleasure of hearing from new Rotarians, Lindsay Hubbell and Marjorie Herrera Lewis.

Lindsay Hubbell, a Southlake Rotary member since 4/23/19, and an attorney at the Law Office of Dana L. White, PLLC, was brought up in a small town in Texas.  She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Relations at the University of Texas; and subsequently moved to Fort Worth to attend Texas Wesleyan University for her JD program.  Lindsay applies her experiences as an attorney and a community volunteer to design and execute strategies to meet the community building, fundraising and communication goals of the Fort Worth Country Day Alumni Association. Lindsay is a member of the Junior League of Fort Worth, formerly serving on the Steering Committee for Christmas in Cowtown.  Lindsay also previously served as a Director on the Board of Texas Center for Arts and Academics; Board Member at Texas Center for Arts and Academics; Chair of the Resource Development Committee at Texas Center for Arts and Academics; Coordinator and Manager of Junior League volunteers for Fort Worth Teen Court; and Member of the Christmas in Cowtown Steering Committee.  The Southlake Rotary Club is grateful to have Lindsay as a member, as she epitomizes ‘service over self.’

Marjorie Herrera Lewis, a Southlake Rotary member since 10/12/18, is an accomplished sportswriter and novelist, and recently published her historical novel When the Men Were Gone, set in WWII and chronicling the first female football coach in the state of Texas, Tylene Wilson! Based on a true story, When the Men Were Gone is a powerful and vibrant novel of perseverance and personal courage under severe oppression. Marjorie generously donated every cent of her per-book royalties (about $1/book) for books sold between January 14-20 to the Rotary Literacy Program, raising $500 for the Rotary Literacy Program. A BIG THANK YOU to Marjorie for her generosity AND for her wonderful book.  You can order the book online here: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/when-the-men-w…/1127273390… #wearerotary.  Marjorie exemplifies the values of Rotary, including service above self, fellowship, leadership, and the passion for diversity and understanding. She has shared her gift of writing, her thinking, her time, and her awesome talent to our club and in support of our community and world. Marjorie also exemplifies a Member who selflessly DOES for the Club with no intent for accolades or recognition. The Southlake Rotary Club is thankful to have Marjorie as a member, as she also, epitomizes ‘service over self.’

Following the classification speeches, the Southlake Rotary Club commenced the ceremonial “Passing of the Gavel,” signaling the transfer of the Club presidency as of July 1st. The presidential gavel was passed from 2018-2019 President, Arlin Gold-Stegmair, to the President Elect, Dana White, who will preside over the 2019-2020 year with the theme of “Rotary Connects the World.”

Outgoing president Arlin Gold-Stegmair, Business Development Officer at Providence Bank, handed over the gavel to Dana White, owner/managing attorney at the Law Office of Dana L. White, PLLC. “It has been an honor to serve,” Arlin said, “and if you have the opportunity to serve Rotary as President, I highly recommend it to each of you.”  Dana stated, “As incoming President, I would like to thank and congratulate outgoing President Arlin Gold-Stegmair for her inspirational leadership this past Rotary year.”  Dana then presented Arlin with an appreciation Award for her wonderful service to our Club,  Dana stated, “Thank you, Arlin, for all the great work you accomplished on behalf of our Club this year!"

Sue Brown was also recognized for her awesome service as our Club’s Treasurer for the last three years!  Southlake Rotarian Phyllis Catton presented beautiful flowers to both Sue Brown, for her selfless service as our Club’s treasurer and Arlin Gold-Stegmair, for her wonderful tenure as our Club’s President.   The event was extraordinary and the camaraderie priceless.

Dana White has previously served the Club as Secretary. The other members of the Board for the 2019-2020, (with more to be announced at a later date) are as follows: Sue Brown (Secretary), Dan Phillips (Treasurer), Arlin Gold-Stegmair (Sergeant-at-Arms & Immediate Past President).

Committees (with more to be announced following Dana’s vision for Club on July 19th)) are as follows: Club Service – Lisa McBee (Chair); Service Projects – Arlin Gold-Stegmair (Chair); International Service – Phyllis Catton (Chair); The Rotary Foundation & Rotary Programs: John Pichler (Chair).

Since June 2005, the Southlake Rotary Club, one of more than 33,000 worldwide clubs included in Rotary International, has been committed to “service beyond self,” and exemplifies the humanitarian spirit of the organization’s 1.2 million members.  For more information about the Club's community service projects and its events, visit the website at https://content.clubrunner.ca/4263/.

Congratulations & thank you, Arlin, for your outstanding leadership and many blessings to Dana on her upcoming year as our Club’s President.! #wearerotary #peopleofaction #rotaryconnectstheworld

Southlake Rotary Club’s Recognizes Lisa McBee as “Rotarian of the Quarter – 3rd Quarter of 2019

Posted by Marjorie Lewis on Jun 21, 2019
Under the auspices of the 2019-20 Rotary International’s presidential theme, “Rotary Connects the World,” the Southlake Rotary Club initiated selection and recognition each quarter our of our "Rotarian of the Quarter" Club Advocate. With the theme of ‘connection’ to our communities and helping those in need” at the heart of each Rotarian’s service commitment, the Board of the Southlake Rotary has chosen Lisa McBee, inducted into our Club on January 16, 2018, as our third quarter “Rotarian of the Quarter.”

Lisa McBee, a Southlake attorney, not only exemplifies the values of Rotary in her work specializing in immigration law but in her role as a member of Rotary International. As a member of the Southlake Rotary Club, Lisa has volunteered her time and resources through her participation in our Club’s service projects, including:

  • DPS (Department of Public Safety) Appreciation Day/Officer of the Year Award;
  • Scholarships for the children of Southlake DPS police officers and firefighters;
  • Quarterly Trash Pick Up for the City of Southlake’s ‘Adopt a Street Program’;
  • GRACE Christmas Cottage Toy Drive & GRACE Pantry food drives;
  • Providing resources & support to the Community Storehouse & Metroport Meals on Wheels;
  • Delivering winter garments to area Homeless Shelters; and
  • Sponsorship of a Rotary International foreign exchange student;  and
  • Sponsorship of a dental clinic in Costa Rica

While Lisa has volunteered for these worthy causes and for many more, she is being recognized as our Club’s “Rotarian of the Quarter” for the personal touch she brings to Rotary. A birthday or an anniversary will never go unrecognized by Lisa, who sends out handwritten cards to every Southlake Rotary member to commemorate the milestone events.

“I like to show my appreciation,” Lisa said. “It’s also a reflection of my love of language.” She also sends out handwritten thank-you notes to guest speakers. Acknowledging that the handwritten notes is, unfortunately, a dying art, Lisa prefers to keep that personal form of communication alive. In addition, however, Lisa also utilizes her 21st century communication skills by updating the Southlake chapter website.

“I like showcasing people who are important to the club,” she said.  It is not only within Rotary that Lisa exemplifies the values of Rotary, including service above self, fellowship, leadership, and passion for diversity and understanding. She lives these values in her professional life as an attorney with a primary focus on employment-based immigration law, with an emphasis on H-1B non-immigrant visas. Lisa enjoys the opportunity to work with diverse clients throughout the world and collaborating with human resources personnel to develop innovative immigration solutions for meeting emerging hiring needs.

Lisa has been an attorney for 13 years, most recently with the Law Office of Dana L. White, PLLC. Lisa joined her sister, fellow Southlake Rotarian Dana, in Dana’s Southlake office when Lisa moved back to Texas after several decades in Kansas and Missouri.  A native of Texas, Lisa was born in Azle and raised in Corpus Christi. She has a Bachelor’s degree in History from the University of Kansas and a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She is a member of White’s Chapel United Methodist Church and became a member of Rotary shortly after moving to Southlake in December 2017.

Reflecting on Rotary’s big picture, Lisa said she appreciates the work Rotary does for the world. “I enjoy doing it while working with like-minded people,” she said. As for the smaller scale, what Lisa also enjoys about Rotary is, “Coming together for our group lunches, the camaraderie and for the people who can be so funny.”

Please join us in congratulating Lisa on her recognition as our “Rotarian of the Quarter” for the 3rd Quarter of 2019! #wearerotary #peopleofaction #rotaryconnectstheworld

Sgt. Grant Williams of the Irving Police Department's Bomb Squad

Posted by Lisa McBee on Jun 07, 2019

Sgt. Grant Williams of the Irving, Texas Police Department’s Bomb Squad, enlightened the Southlake Rotary Club about the perils involved with detecting IEDs, explosives, explosive chemicals, pyrotechnics and ammunition on June 7, 2019.  Sgt. Williams brought with him the Bomb Squad’s bomb robot, which was VERY COOL – as well as a VERY heavy bomb suit (perhaps 80-100 lbs.?). A bomb suit, also known as a blast suit, is a heavy suit of body armor designed to withstand the pressure generated by a bomb and any fragments the bomb may produce.  The bomb suit was fun to look at and touch --- yet entirely sobering when you consider that an actual living person must put himself/herself within the confines of this undoubtedly oppressive and scorching ensemble while trying to disarm an explosive!  As an officer of the Bomb Squad, we want to thank Sgt. Williams for his wonderful and informative presentation, as well as applaud him for keeping our community/world safe. He and his colleagues put their very lives at risk for public safety --- so give a big THANK YOU to first responders and others serving and sacrificing for our country today!   #wearerotary #peopleofaction #rotaryconnectstheworld.

Dagmar Fleming: “Three Mistakes That Cost Entrepreneurs a Bigger Income.”

Posted by Lisa McBee on May 11, 2019

The vibrant and entertaining Dagmar Fleming spoke at the Southlake Rotary Club this past Friday and shared her expertise with us on “Three Mistakes that Cost Entrepreneurs a Bigger Income.”  For those entrepreneurs needing more sales, struggling with inconsistent revenue, fighting too hard to get new customers, and believing they are not making the money they want, Dagmar demonstrated how to beat three potential success saboteurs that keep us stuck below our revenue potential. We all left feeling fired-up, focused, and equipped with:

  • Easy strategies necessary to rocket our businesses forward and achieve levels never hit before.
  • The #1 most overlooked TOOL FOR SUCCESS (Every accomplished leader uses this one)
  • The ability to identify and dissolve (once and for all) limiting MONEY BELIEFS and deep emotional reasons we may not know we even have that BLOCK our success.
Many of us left this meeting feeling ready to create a new powerful money mindset that will change our business and lives.  A big thank you to Dagmar Fleming for her wonderful presentation!!!  Here is a link to Dagmar’s website: https://www.dagmarfleming.com/.  #wearerotary #peopleofaction #rotaryconnectstheworld

Tracy Herbert: “Achieving Audacious Goals While Overcoming Setback"

Posted by Lisa McBee on Apr 25, 2019

Tracy Herbert came to speak to our Club last Friday imparting her inspirational subject,  “Achieving Audacious Goals While Overcoming Setback.”  She opened up her speech with a beautiful and moving video depicting her celebrated and renowned bike ride across our nation --Tracy rode her bicycle 3,527 miles from Golden Gate Bridge to the Brooklyn Bridge to provide hope and spread awareness about diabetes, a disease she herself has battled since childhood.  The video depicted the exciting conclusion of her bike ride, which was filmed on the Dr. Oz Show.

Tracy provided our club with a wonderful example of bravery, diligence and fearlessness. Tracy courageously rode her bike across the country alone, BY HERSELF, without any following pacers, trekking through oftentimes dangerous and daunting countrysides.  She only had her cell phone for navigation and communication with her husband, which often had no service!!!

Southlake Rotarians had an opportunity to purchase her bestselling books, “Diabetes Tragedy to Triumph: Lessons From 40 Years of Beating the Odds,” and “Ride for Hope: One Woman's Solo 3,527 Mile Bicycle Ride that inspired the Nation.”  To learn more about Tracy go to her website at: https://tracyherbert.com. wearerotary #peopleofaction #rotaryconnectstheworld

Posted by Lisa McBee on Mar 15, 2019
Southlake Rotary Club’s announces Marjorie Herrera Lewis as it’s "Rotarian of the Quarter" -- 1st Quarter of 2019

Under the auspices of the 2019-20 Rotary International’s presidential theme, “Rotary Connects the World,” the Southlake Rotary Club began a program to recognize each quarter a "Southlake Rotarian of the Quarter," one who best exemplifies the "Rotary Connects the World" theme. With the theme of ‘connection’ to our communities and helping those in need at the heart of each Rotarian’s commitment, the Board of the Southlake Rotary choose Marjorie Herrera Lewis, inducted into our Club on December 7, 2018, as our first quarter “Southlake Rotarian of the Quarter.”

Marjorie Herrera Lewis, an accomplished sports writer and novelist, recently published her historical novel When the Men Were Gone, set in WWII and chronicling the first female football coach in the state of Texas, Tylene Wilson!

Marjorie has a lifelong passion for sports.  She wrote for many newspapers, including the Fort Worth Star Telegram and the Dallas Morning News.  She even becoming a beat writer for the Dallas Cowboys at age 29.  Throughout her career, Marjorie covered college and professional sports, including the Texas Rangers and Dallas Mavericks, as well as tennis and golf.  She also covered the Super Bowl, Wimbledon, the NCAA men's basketball tournament, and several college bowl games. While writing When the Men Were Gone, Marjorie even tried her hand at coaching football and was added to the Texas Wesleyan University football coaching staff!!!! She presently teaches media ethics as a university professor at the University of North Texas.

Marjorie has received numerous reviews lauding her book including in Sports Illustrated and the D Magazine. There is already a contract for the movie rights!!!! We give a big SHOUT OUT to Marge and her well-deserved success in this endeavor!!!  Please join us in congratulating Marjorie on her recognition as our “Rotarian Connects the World” Advocate for the 2nd Quarter of 2019.

Update from Danny Vegel, our Global Scholar

Posted on Nov 07, 2018

We have an update from our Global Scholar, Danny Vegel.  Danny graduated from Carroll High School in Southlake and subsequently graduated from the US Naval Academy in 2017.  His mother, father and older brother are also US Naval Academy graduates  Here is the latest from Danny:

I just wanted to update you on the past two weeks. I had a great time attending the Rotary District Conference the previous weekend! District 1130 brought in some great speakers and chose a great location by the ocean. I had fantastic time meeting all the Rotarians based in London and interacting with the other Rotary Scholars at the conference. Unfortunately I did not meet anyone from the Hammersmith Club. Nevertheless, I was able to secure a chance to present to the Enfield Rotary Club in November! I have also enjoyed the chance to meet Rotarians at my host club. Stella Russell took great care of us at the conference. Last night, I also had a great time grabbing dinner with my councilor Anil Dhiri. Overall, it's been a great two weeks of Rotary events and meetings! On a separate topic, would it be possible to visit the Southlake Rotary Club during Christmas break? I plan to be home from December 17th to 28th. I would love to come visit on the 21st or 28th if there are meetings!

Very respectfully,

Danny Vegel

Our New Vision Statement

OUR NEW VISION STATEMENT: Why Should You Care?

By Stephanie A. Urchick, chair of Rotary’s Strategic Planning Committee

We are now more than a year into the process of revisiting Rotary’s strategic plan, a process that will allow us to examine our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in order to move the organization in a direction that will allow Rotary to thrive in the years ahead. Our new vision statement is the first lap in that three-year journey.

You may have seen the vision statement and wondered what its relevance is to you. If Rotary were a ship approaching land, our new vision statement would be the lighthouse that keeps us from running aground. Our vision statement explains what we want to achieve, in the same way that our mission statement explains our focus, and our strategic plan represents how we are going to get there.

Strategic planning is a process, not an event. And it is certainly not limited to activity conducted in the board room. Almost 30,000 Rotarians, Rotaractors, and alumni participated in the 2017 triennial strategic planning survey sent out last January. Our strategy office and our consultant partner, Grant Thornton, then conducted countless focus groups, in-depth interviews, and discussions with Rotarians, non-Rotarians, Rotary leaders, alumni, Rotaractors, and others to gather more insight. Over the course of all these sessions, more than one million individuals had an opportunity to provide input.

Out of these focus groups, different elements emerged that were then tested around the world to be sure they were culturally appropriate to both a Rotarian and non-Rotarian audience. These elements became our 24-word vision statement.

“Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.”

President-elect Barry Rassin did a masterful job of unpacking the vision statement to incoming district governors and other leaders at the 2018 International Assembly in January. More and more leaders and members are having a chance to see and hear the vision statement and think about how these words reflect the impact we wish to have on the world.

Entering the second year of the process, we will begin to test “priority concepts” that will move Rotary toward our vision statement. These concepts are being tested in every part of the world through additional focus groups, to ensure these concepts resonate in all geographies, all languages, and all cultures. In the third year, the rubber will hit the road. Strategies and tactics will be created and approved, and districts and clubs will be asked to try them and give us feedback.

Why is all this important? Let’s look at Amazon, a great example of the power of strategic planning. Amazon was the very first company to endorse free shipping. Amazon, researchers have noted, rose to power not by inventing a new product or service, but by analyzing the entire industry and making multiple moves into the future, much like a chess game.

Our three year-process allows for many checkpoints along the way to determine if we are still on the right track, if external or internal aspects have changed, and if a response to these changes requires altering our trajectory. When the strategic plan finally rolls out two years from now, there will be more than one million people who — because they had input — can say, “I helped shape that plan.”

What would we like you to do? Share the vision statement with your fellow club members. Think about what it means to your club. And look for opportunities to give your input into our strategic planning process. Help us chart a course for taking action to create lasting change.

Update from Global Scholar, Danny Vegel

Everything is going great here in Beijing! I have one more month of class to go and then I have my thesis defense. I should be all finished up with this part of the program by early July! With the end of the semester in sight, it's hard to believe how quickly time has flown by. At this point, I'm comfortably settled into life in Beijing.

It's been a great experience making friends with people from all over the world. I've particularly enjoyed getting to know some of the Chinese students better this semester and getting the chance to be more involved with everything that is happening in Beijing. I was able to organize a clothing drive among international students earlier in the year to donate to a local charity. We were able to muster a few bags worth of winter clothes. Hopefully we can organize another one this summer as people are moving out.

I've also really enjoyed my classes so far this semester. I am currently taking courses on China and the Global Economy, China's Foreign Policy, East Asia and International Relations, and a Mandarin Chinese course. Given the US-China relationship right now, it is a very fascinating time to be in China and hearing Chinese opinions on everything going on.

In addition, I've was able to get in contact with the London Rotary Club and joined in on one of their meetings in March! It was very cool to join a video chat with so many people from all over the world. I am excited to have been scheduled in for a presentation to them on June 21st!

Please extend my thanks and greetings to everyone at the Southlake Rotary Club! This has been an amazing experience so far and I look forward to seeing everyone again in person when I get back home to Texas.

13th Annual DPS Appreciation Event

Thanks to our many generous sponsors and volunteers, Rotary’s 13th Annual DPS Appreciation Event was a huge success. Saturday October 30th, in Southlake Town Square, hundreds of people had fun, while honoring our public servants in the Department of Public Safety.  We joined forces with the City of Southlake to present the DPS Appreciation event in conjunction with National Night Out and Fire Prevention Safety at Southlake Town Square.

We awarded $6,000 in scholarships to four children of DPS employees (for a total of $59,000 over last 11 years). Southlake Firefighter/Paramedic, Jay Nunnally, was recognized as the Officer of the Year and received a gift basket filled with gifts and certificates donated by numerous local merchants. More than 400 people ate free burgers, BBQ, hot dogs, and sandwiches. In addition, there were various family-friendly activities, including a balloon artist, face painter, petting zoo, police and fire vehicles and personnel, as well as safety give-aways.

Thank you to everyone who made the Blood Drive a success. Carter Blood Care collected 14 units (which can be used to help save 42 lives) and arranged for more donations.

Please join us in thanking our sponsors, including:

Farewell Elena; welcome home Emily

Rotary Youth Exchange builds peace one young person at a time. Students learn a new language, discover another culture, and truly become global citizens. Exchanges for students 15 to 19 years old are sponsored by Rotary clubs in more than 100 countries.

Last week we bid adieu to Elena Morata, our exchange student, before she returned to her home in Spain.  This week we will welcome back Rod Hall’s daughter, Emily, who very recently completed a ten-month immersion in Sardinia, Italy.

Long-term exchanges last a full academic year, and students attend local schools and live with multiple host families. Short-term exchanges last from several days to three months and are often structured as camps, tours, or homestays that take place when school is not in session.

For more information, visit https://www.rotary.org/en/our-programs/youth-exchanges
