Sleep in Heavenly Peace: No Child Without a Bed
Jul. 30, 2021 12:00 p.m.
A BIG thank you to Jeannie Stone on her wonderful presentation yesterday at our Rotary Club meeting! You may not be aware, but child bedlessness is a national problem, and as a national nonprofit with chapters spread across the country, Sleep in Heavenly Peace has provided the solution. SHP is a volunteer organization that builds beds for children who are sleeping on the floor. Jeannie Stone is the Fundraising/Bedding Coordinator for the SHP's Fort Worth/N. Dallas Chapter. Jeannie informed our Club about the local need for kids' bedding, and the multiple ways to get involved either as individuals or as a sponsoring club. We are hoping to incorporate this worthy cause as one of our Club's initiatives this year! #servetochangelives #rotaryopensopportunities #rotaryconnectstheworld #wearerotary #peopleofaction #southlakerotaryclub #DPSAppreciationDay #shptxdallasnorth #shpdallasnorth #justbuildthebed #WeAreSHP #nokidsleepsonthefloorinourtown #SHP #buildday #shpfamily #EveryoneDeservsAbed #worthit #thanksabunks #humanshelpinghumans #southlakerotary |

Cheers! Around the World in 80 Toasts
Aug. 20, 2021 12:00 p.m.
Brandon Cook: Cheers! Around the World in 80 Toasts For somebody not quite out of his twenties, Brandon Cook has experienced a lifetime of travel around the world. In the process, he picked up an affinity for the custom of toasting in the local language, and sometimes the literal translation is quite amusing. As Brandon delved into the linguistics and local lore, he found there is often a fascinating story behind each toast. Brandon’s elegant hardbound book, “Cheers! Around the World in 80 Toasts,” and his presentation touch upon 80 countries worth of cultural differences and customs that vary widely yet inevitably lead to two things in common when it comes to social drinking: a salutation and the clinking of glasses! See these links for information about Brandon’s book: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/01/dining/drinks/cheers-around-the-world-in-80-toasts-book.html, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eu_X_2arNgs’, Brandon provided our Club with some terrifically entertaining stories of how he coped with the challenges of extensive travel, language learning, and making memorable connections with fellow imbibers within very short periods of time. (Hint: alcohol always helps!) Brandon's presentation was wonderful and we look forward to seeing Brandon's success as a rising Southlake literary star. #servetochangelives #rotaryopensopportunities #rotaryconnectstheworld #wearerotary #peopleofaction #southlakerotaryclub #DPSAppreciationDay #funtimes #rotaryclubofsouthlake #DPSappreciationday #DPSmenofaction #DPSsouthlakerotaryfeedscitizensofSouthlake #DPSfuntimeforchildren #DPShonringourmenandwomenwhoprotectus #DPSnationalnightoutrotarycelebraton |

https://www.mannysuptowntexmex.com Hey Gang! Remember that this week, Sept. 10th (and the 24th) we are meeting at Manny's Uptown. WE ARE AT TIMARRON FOR THE 17TH! Our speaker this week will be Chris Tribble, Director, of the Bob Jones Nature Center and Preserve in Southlake. The natural beauty and calming effect of Bob Jones Park & Nature Center is a welcome escape from the traffic, the hustle and bustle, and even the manicured environment that typically defines Southlake. Chris Tribble, Director, will remind us of what this terrific, under-utilized and often under-appreciated gem in our community has to offer. I’m told that his smooth delivery is an excellent complement to the soothing effects of a Manny’s margarita. Give it a try! |

Emergency Preparedness Month/Southlake DPS
Sep. 17, 2021 12:00 p.m.
We were privileged this last Friday to hear from Southlake DPS’s Emergency Manager, Amanda Meneses, who provides strategic guidance and oversight, working jointly with other city, state, federal and non-governmental entities. Joining her was Emergency Management Specialist Isabella Uceda, who focuses on public education and developing as a continuity practitioner. As we witnessed during February's Great Freeze, the City of Southlake takes emergency management seriously. The Office of Emergency Management assists the city, local businesses and residents throughout all phases of a disaster cycle: prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery. Together, the Emergency Management team wants to make sure all of Southlake is prepared and resilient in the event of an emergency. #servetochangelives #rotaryopensopportunities #rotaryconnectstheworld #wearerotary #peopleofaction #southlakerotaryclub #DPSAppreciationDay #funtimes #rotaryclubofsouthlake #DPSsouthlakerotaryfeedscitizensofSouthlake #DPSemergencypreparedness #DPShonringourmenandwomenwhoprotectus #DPSAppreciation #greatfreeze #emergencymanagement #disasterpreparedness |

Stories of Giving
Sep. 24, 2021 12:00 p.m.
Join the Rotary Club of Southlake at Manny’s Tex-Mex in Southlake on Friday, Sept. 24, 2021 at 12 pm for an inspiring program! "Service to Others" can happen many ways and to many different degrees. Sometimes it's how you treat people, whether they be family, friends, customers, employees, or even perfect strangers, simply by applying The Golden Rule. Other times it involves a more concerted effort to assist by donating your time, talent or treasure. In any case, it usually leaves an impression on both recipient and giver, often creating a story that's fun to tell and impactful to hear. Tomorrow's speaker will be sharing some of his favorite such stories. Since all of us Rotarians are by definition people who value Service Above Self, I believe you'll enjoy Frank Pichler's stories of giving. His best gifts were the ones nobody expected. Those also generated some of the best reactions. As you might guess, our own John Pichler, the son of Frank Pichler, has heard many of these stories multiple times, yet these stories never grown old and they continue to inspire us all. I expect they'll do the same for you! #servetochangelives #rotaryopensopportunities #rotaryconnectstheworld #wearerotary #peopleofaction #southlakerotaryclub #funtimes #mannystexmex #Manny’s

New Projects Planned for Southlake Town Square
Oct. 08, 2021 12:00 p.m.
It is not an overstatement to say that Southlake Town Square has become a highly recognized and admired model from which architects and city planners around the world have drawn inspiration for their own similar "downtown" development projects.
The plans to develop open pastures into an upscale downtown for the City of Southlake began in the 1990s. Brian Stebbins' vision was to create a pedestrian-friendly downtown inspired by The Plaza in Kansas City, a number of international outside malls, and even the movie "Back to the Future". The result is a timeless mixture of classic and contemporary building styles that defy the area's actual age. Working alongside Brian at the time and now a Principal and the President of U.S. Real Estate for Cooper and Company, Frank Bliss continues the quest to develop Southlake Town Square faithfully to its original master plan. At noon this Friday, October 8 at Timarron Country Club, Frank will be telling us about some of the most recent additions and improvements to SLTSq, along with presenting his proposed expansion plans for its future. #servetochangelives #rotaryopensopportunities #rotaryconnectstheworld #wearerotary #peopleofaction #southlakerotaryclub #DPSAppreciationDay#funtimes #rotaryclubofsouthlake #southlakecitysquare #southlake #funtimes |

Rotary International's Shelter Boxes
Oct. 22, 2021 12:00 p.m.
You don’t have to be a Rolling Stones fan to realize that people almost everywhere in the world are vulnerable to sudden and desperate living situations. This is particularly true with unforeseen events, particularly forces of nature. A Shelter Box can be a lifeline for families who’ve lost everything they owned. Our speaker, Denton Rotarian Brian Glenn, will tell us his story of how he became an ambassador for Shelter Box, which has inspired him to assist with disasters in the Philippines, Fiji, Argentina, Paraguay, Haiti, Indonesia and, omigosh, even Oklahoma. Brian will be sharing how easy it is to provide a family with shelter, warmth and dignity after they’ve had those things stripped away in a disaster. BONUS: Our club—thanks to all of you—will be presenting Brian with a check for $2,350 payable to Shelter Box International! We’ll also have an oversized version of the check for a photo op, so wear a clean shirt and brush your hair for another group picture documenting our club’s commitment to making a difference to those who need our help. #funtimes #rotaryclubofsouthlake #shelterboxusa

Former Fort Worth, Texas Mayor
Oct. 29, 2021 12:00 p.m.
Fort Worth, Texas, the 12th most populated city in America, has enjoyed the good fortune of having several iconic mayors who demonstrated extraordinary leadership during their tenures. Having recently concluded ten years of service as Mayor, Betsy Price is certainly one of those outstanding examples. You may expect that in her usual forthright manner, Mayor Price will be offering her informed opinions of the challenges and opportunities facing our county, and her vision for Tarrant County going forward. We are honored that Mayor Price is carving time out of her still-busy schedule to speak to the Rotary Club of Southlake. Please join us at noon on Friday, Oct. 29 for this exceptional opportunity to meet her in person, because Betsy Price is—much like our club—devoted to making a difference in our community.
