How an Urban Church in a Food Desert Responded with Essential Services During the Pandemic
Apr. 09, 2021 12:00 p.m.
Broadway Baptist Church, established in 1882, is located in the 76104 zip code in Fort Worth’s Near Southside. Recently, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram did a series of articles on “Life and Death in 76104.” This zip code has the lowest life expectancy of any zip code in Texas due to food insecurity, nutrition, and other factors. In response, BBC has had to reconsider and restructure how they provide essential services to this neighborhood by expanding its ideas of community partnerships. Tomorrow's presenter, Peter Nelson, is the Director of Community Ministries and Partnerships for Broadway Baptist Church. Peter will be retelling the captivating story of how BBC altered its mission and methods of serving others. The results are nothing short of a fundamental transformation of how a 140-year old church thinks about community ministries. BOARD MEETING REMINDER: There is a Board of Directors meeting at 11am, and all club members are welcome to attend and contribute their ideas and opinions. #rotaryopensopportunities #rotaryconnectstheworld #wearerotary #peopleofaction #southlakerotaryclub

Sports Columnist, Dallas Morning News
Apr. 16, 2021 12:00 p.m.
From Southlake Rotarian, John Pichler: I always welcome any and all help in composing these weekly program missives. Since tomorrow’s speaker was arranged by her, with tongue-in-cheek I asked Marge Lewis (our resident bestselling author) if she knew any good writers who could send me a quick draft. Here was her self-deprecating—albeit compliant—reply: The only good writer I know is Kevin Sherrington, and he doesn’t have a bio. So I’m copying one from the back of the book we co-edited. It’s titled “SportsDay Bound, the Best in Sports from The Dallas Morning News”, published by Abilene Christian University Press: “Kevin Sherrington has been a sportswriter for more than 40 years and has worked for The Dallas Morning News since 1985. Kevin has twice been named among the nation’s top 10 sports columnists and has been voted Texas Sportswriter of the Year 5 times by his peers. He also has taught journalism at Richland College and at SMU. He is a graduate of the University of Houston.” Nicely done, Marge. Kevin is going to talk about the changing landscape of newspaper sports coverage and give an overview of his highly acclaimed career. Great stuff! We are full-on Timarron! Please support our club’s return to a semblance of normalcy by attending tomorrow’s meeting at Timarron. Even better, invite a friend who might enjoy our special blend of Rotary fellowship along with a great program. #rotaryopensopportunities #rotaryconnectstheworld #wearerotary #peopleofaction #southlakerotaryclub |

Celebrating Legacies
Jun. 04, 2021 12:00 p.m.
30-40 minutes and her biography reads like a best-selling epic novel. But Veronica promises to hit many of the high points in her life, plus relate stories that others have shared, all of which have shaped her as a person. In Veronica’s words, “Legacies are the journey of peoples lives. We all have one and I thought I’d share some of the ones that have given me the passion for what I do.” Sounds like a terrific program to me! Special Request: I know we’re coming off a short week. I know some members will be out of town. Or trying to catch up at work following the holiday break. HOWEVER, Veronica is a new member with a fascinating life story and I’m asking everyone to please make a special effort to attend tomorrow’s meeting. I promise you’ll be glad you did. #rotaryopensopportunities #rotaryconnectstheworld #wearerotary #peopleofaction #southlakerotaryclub #DPSAppreciationDay |

Call A Ride of Southlake
Jun. 25, 2021 12:00 p.m.
For 20 years, Southlake seniors have counted on Call a Ride of Southlake (CARS) to get to doctor appointments, the grocery store or to other activities. It gives them a sense of autonomy because they can call ahead, schedule a ride and get to where they need to go without fumbling through the often confusing steps of a phone app or dealing with online payments. Our speaker on June 25, 20221 was Lisa Adam. Lisa began volunteering for CARS in 2007 as a driver and now serves on its Board as Marketing Director. Lisa will cover such things as their service area, eligibility requirements and restrictions, funding sources, volunteer opportunities and more. Cheers! Around the World in 80 Toasts
Aug. 20, 2021 12:00 p.m.
Brandon Cook: Cheers! Around the World in 80 Toasts For somebody not quite out of his twenties, Brandon Cook has experienced a lifetime of travel around the world. In the process, he picked up an affinity for the custom of toasting in the local language, and sometimes the literal translation is quite amusing. As Brandon delved into the linguistics and local lore, he found there is often a fascinating story behind each toast. Brandon’s elegant hardbound book, “Cheers! Around the World in 80 Toasts,” and his presentation touch upon 80 countries worth of cultural differences and customs that vary widely yet inevitably lead to two things in common when it comes to social drinking: a salutation and the clinking of glasses! See these links for information about Brandon’s book: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/01/dining/drinks/cheers-around-the-world-in-80-toasts-book.html, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eu_X_2arNgs’, Brandon provided our Club with some terrifically entertaining stories of how he coped with the challenges of extensive travel, language learning, and making memorable connections with fellow imbibers within very short periods of time. (Hint: alcohol always helps!) Brandon's presentation was wonderful and we look forward to seeing Brandon's success as a rising Southlake literary star. #servetochangelives #rotaryopensopportunities #rotaryconnectstheworld #wearerotary #peopleofaction #southlakerotaryclub #DPSAppreciationDay #funtimes #rotaryclubofsouthlake #DPSappreciationday #DPSmenofaction #DPSsouthlakerotaryfeedscitizensofSouthlake #DPSfuntimeforchildren #DPShonringourmenandwomenwhoprotectus #DPSnationalnightoutrotarycelebraton |

Stories of Giving
Sep. 24, 2021 12:00 p.m.
Join the Rotary Club of Southlake at Manny’s Tex-Mex in Southlake on Friday, Sept. 24, 2021 at 12 pm for an inspiring program! "Service to Others" can happen many ways and to many different degrees. Sometimes it's how you treat people, whether they be family, friends, customers, employees, or even perfect strangers, simply by applying The Golden Rule. Other times it involves a more concerted effort to assist by donating your time, talent or treasure. In any case, it usually leaves an impression on both recipient and giver, often creating a story that's fun to tell and impactful to hear. Tomorrow's speaker will be sharing some of his favorite such stories. Since all of us Rotarians are by definition people who value Service Above Self, I believe you'll enjoy Frank Pichler's stories of giving. His best gifts were the ones nobody expected. Those also generated some of the best reactions. As you might guess, our own John Pichler, the son of Frank Pichler, has heard many of these stories multiple times, yet these stories never grown old and they continue to inspire us all. I expect they'll do the same for you! #servetochangelives #rotaryopensopportunities #rotaryconnectstheworld #wearerotary #peopleofaction #southlakerotaryclub #funtimes #mannystexmex #Manny’s

New Projects Planned for Southlake Town Square
Oct. 08, 2021 12:00 p.m.
It is not an overstatement to say that Southlake Town Square has become a highly recognized and admired model from which architects and city planners around the world have drawn inspiration for their own similar "downtown" development projects.
The plans to develop open pastures into an upscale downtown for the City of Southlake began in the 1990s. Brian Stebbins' vision was to create a pedestrian-friendly downtown inspired by The Plaza in Kansas City, a number of international outside malls, and even the movie "Back to the Future". The result is a timeless mixture of classic and contemporary building styles that defy the area's actual age. Working alongside Brian at the time and now a Principal and the President of U.S. Real Estate for Cooper and Company, Frank Bliss continues the quest to develop Southlake Town Square faithfully to its original master plan. At noon this Friday, October 8 at Timarron Country Club, Frank will be telling us about some of the most recent additions and improvements to SLTSq, along with presenting his proposed expansion plans for its future. #servetochangelives #rotaryopensopportunities #rotaryconnectstheworld #wearerotary #peopleofaction #southlakerotaryclub #DPSAppreciationDay#funtimes #rotaryclubofsouthlake #southlakecitysquare #southlake #funtimes |
