“Apartments in Southlake? What?!”
Oct. 25, 2019 12:00 p.m.
Calling all Southlake citizens: You won’t want to miss this important topic! Cooper & Stebbins will be speaking at our Club regarding their proposal for a multifamily development in Southlake Town Square on October 25, 2019, 12:00 pm at the Timarron Country Club. Cooper & Stebbins, a subsidiary of Cooper and Company, an international private investment company with quality real estate developments in the U.S. and New Zealand, has been the master developer of Southlake Town Square for 23 years +. They have recently proposed the development of 350 apartment units averaging 1,000 square feet each, and will include such amenities as a pool, fitness center, parking garage and meeting spaces. Through the efforts of Cooper and Stebbins, our premier Southlake Town Square has garnered the highest residential prices in the City, according to their website. Yet, the Town Square has experienced restrained growth over the last decade compared to DFW’s real estate boom for a variety of reasons, and specifically, due to restrictive zoning. Cooper & Stebbins has presented their views on the Square’s sustainability, as follows: “It is not the most intellectual of the species that survives; it is not the strongest that survives; but the species that survives is the one that is able best to adapt and adjust to the changing environment in which it finds itself.” ------ Leon C. Megginson Come to our meeting and find out the details of Cooper & Stebbins proposal. And the need is pressing - according to Dave Parks, President of Home Care Assistance of Fort Worth, someone is diagnosed with some form of dementia every three seconds. In his talk, “How to Keep Your Brain Young and Healthy," Dave will share with our members:

City of Southlake Fire Department Update
Feb. 21, 2020 12:00 p.m.
Kurt Hall, Deputy Chief of Operations with the Southlake Fire Department, will be our featured speaker tomorrow. While Southlake’s residential growth has begun slowing as it approaches its zoning capacity, commercial growth is soaring. Of particular concern for our fire services is Southlake’s vertical expansion with new hotels and other multi-story projects underway. For all these reasons, our Fire Department faces continual growth challenges with staffing, training and equipment. Deputy Chief Hall has much to share with us regarding the tremendous strides that our Fire Department has made, and the statewide recognition it has deservedly earned as it keeps pace with our community’s shifting needs for fire protection. #rotaryconnectstheworld #wearerotary #peopleofaction #southlakerotaryclub |

Climbing Mount Kiliminjaro
Feb. 28, 2020 12:00 p.m.
Rod Hall, our fellow Rotarian (and a great orator, too), will be our featured speaker tomorrow. Last month Rod and his son, Chris, successfully conquered Mount Kilimanjaro! You may also be surprised to learn that Kilimanjaro is the highest single free-standing mountain in the world, with its summit of 19,341 ft above sea level and 16,100 ft high from its plateau base. Kilimanjaro is also the fourth most topographically prominent peak on Earth. Despite suffering bouts of Whataburger withdrawal, Rod survived to share stories from his adventure. He will answer some of the most common questions like: How dangerous is it? How do you prepare? Where is Mount Kilimanjaro and why would anyone want to climb it? How close is the nearest Whataburger? In all seriousness, if you have not heard Rod publicly speak, you are in for an unexpected treat. |

Cyber Security
Mar. 06, 2020 12:00 p.m.
Come to our next Rotary meeting at the Timarron Club, Southlake, TX on March 6, 2020 at 12 pm. Scott Minke, Expert on Cyber Security, will be our speaker. Scott is the CEO of a company called "iTrust IT" and will be making a presentation on how hackers operate and how you can protect yourself. This is a summary of what he will cover: His content includes a video of a recent DEFCON event in Vegas to show what hackers can actually do and well as dispelling the myth of what hackers look like. Beyond that, he’ll cover the basics of cyber security, which involves changing these mindsets: a) “I’m too small to be a target/I don’t have anything a hacker would want” b) “Don’t these people have anything better to do?” c) “My IT guy tells me we have a firewall and an antivirus, so we’re safe” Although there is no such thing as perfect cyber security, 92% of all recorded breaches are due to a failure in PEOPLE and POLICY, which are easy to administer once you’re armed with the information Scott will be sharing. Scott’s website can be found here: https://www.itrust-it.com/ #wearerotary #rotaryconnectstheworld #peopleofaction |
