Please join us Friday, February 10, to hear from Barbara Ballentine about Braided Haven!
Braided Haven, Inc.’s mission is to provide shelter, support, and other critical services to LGBTQ+ individuals, and to bridge the gap between those individuals and their local community through education and advocacy.
This week's meeting will be held in person at Washburn University Memorial Union in the Kansas Room. Click here for directions using Google Maps. Announcements will begin promptly at 7:45 am, with breakfast and coffee being served at 7:30 am!
We will be having a social on February 9th at With Jules, 727 S Kansas Ave from 4-630pm. Beverages and light snacks provided. Both With Jules and Leaping Llamas will be open to socialize and hang out.
Students arrive at 1pm. Pair up one-on-one with a child at Shoe Carnival and help them pick out their very own pair of brand new tennis shoes! The shoes are paid for from existing donations along with a District 5710 grant, so there is no monetary commitment for volunteers. Each event takes approximately 30 minutes.
When: 12 Volunteers are needed each of these dates:
Sole Mates provides new shoes and socks to kids, allowing them to be better participants in activities and alleviates some issues that result from not having “the right things.” If shoes are not replaced often, they become a hospitable environment for bacteria to thrive. For many of the families serviced, shoes are handed down from child to child creating more opportunity for unsanitary situations. Short term effects of shoes that do not properly fit include blisters, pressure sores, & ingrown toe nails. Children could end up with deformities, posture problems, & joint issues.
- When: 2/15/23 (Monthly from 12:45-1:15p.m. through May)
- Where: In the library at Highland Park Central Elementary School
- What: We will be honoring 14 students each month. The goal is to have one volunteer per student. At the very least, we need to provide 7 volunteers a month so that one volunteer does not have more than two students. These are special students who are deserving of our time and attention.
Location details:
You can park along 28th street on the school side of the road. You may also park inside the fenced area along 28th Street if space is available, even though the lot is labeled as "Staff Parking". Be sure to pay attention to the signage posted inside the fenced area. You will enter through door #6 (labeled above the door). This door faces 28th Street and you will need to walk through the fenced area to find it. Once you enter through the double doors, take the first right available. Walk to the end of that hall to the office which will be on your left. You will need to sign in at the office and then you will be directed to the library.
Mosaic Partner Pairs Topeka April 15 - Dec 13, 2023 Applications are now open!
Are you interested in learning more about yourself
and forming a deep relationship that goes beyond the surface?
Would you like to be part of building community?
Mosaic Partner Pairs applications are open for 2023! Topeka United invites community members from all walks of life to participate in a challenging, structured and in-depth initiative called Mosaic Partner Pairs. We're creating an indelible footprint of diverse relationships that will enrich our community in countless ways. Mosaic Partner Pairs advances Topeka United’s vision and mission of achieving a compelling and thriving community by understanding and celebrating our diversity as we advance inclusion, equity, opportunity and welcome for all.
The fundamental concept of Mosaic Partner Pairs is that building deep and lasting individual relationships between people who may not look alike, or worship alike, or otherwise relate to family and community in the same way, is fundamental to building access to the full range of community health and prosperity. In Topeka, we are seeking diversity of representation in all ways – race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, ability/disability, age, geographic and economic sectors and experiences – everyone!
Your commitment as a Mosaic Partner will be to engage in 3 2-hour structured sessions per month with your partner between April 15 and December 13, 2023 – 2 sessions just you and your partner, 1 session in a small group you and your partner will be part of – plus any additional time you may choose to commit. Mosaic does take some time….but it’s fun, it’s challenging, it’s exciting….it’s life-changing and community building.
Applications will close Feb. 28, 2023. Applicants who are paired will be notified by Mar 15, 2023. (Please note: The Mosaic pairing algorithm matches people who are different on the outside, but have similarities on the inside. With that, not all applicants will be paired the first time. We're happy to carry over for those who are not matched!)
For the smoothest application experience, please allow up to 30 minutes of uninterrupted time to complete the two parts of the application!
I am so excited that Topeka South Rotary is interested in partnering with us on the Bridge Builder's Program. I am attaching some more information on the Bridge Builder's Investment Club. In the information, you will find multiple ways to help. One need that arrived yesterday is that our speaker for the April 20th session of Bridge Builder's had to cancel because of a family and work emergency. We are looking for a replacement. Below is information on the session and what the ask is.
April 20th Information
Time: 5:30pm-7:30pm
Place: Avondale East Elementary (455 SE Golf Park Blvd., Topeka, KS 66605)
Topic: Compounding interest and basic introduction to stock market/investing
Purpose: Bridge Builder's is a youth investment club in the Hi-Crest community. The speaker will deliver a TED talk on compounding interest and a basic introduction to the stock market/investing. The session is to be capped at 18 minutes in length and should be as interactive as possible, engaging different learning modes.
Desired Outcome: The students and their parents learn some basics surrounding these elements of compounding interest and a basic introduction to the stock market/investing (Ted talk and then play Life, the board game. The food will be themed around the game.) Example: if I invest x each month for 30 years, how much will I have?
Additionally, here are some links to videos about the program:
Also, since our registration has skyrocketed, we will need some more copies of the Life and Monopoly board games.
For anything concerning Bridge Builder's Brail is the contact. I am also attaching our flier for the Teacher Resource Fair. Jill Rice is the contact for that.
