11/2: BARRY MUNINGER, HIGH RELIABILITY ORGANIZATIONS (BRADBURY THOMPSON ALUMNI CENTER)

Barry Muninger, Kansas Rehabilitation Hospital, will talk to our club on Friday about High Reliability Organizations, in the Bradbury Thompson Alumni Center.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines reliability as the quality of being trustworthy or of performing consistently well. While an aspiration for any business, certain organizations that operate in complex, high-risk environments have taken it a step further. Most recently, healthcare organizations have begun taking quality improvement lessons from organizations with impeccable performance records despite operating in hazardous conditions and applied them to their own efforts to become what is referred to as a High Reliability Organization.

While current trends in healthcare quality certainly have real-life implications on each of us, the basic characteristics of High Reliability Organizations can also be applied to improvement efforts in virtually any profession. This presentation will give a brief overview of how the theory of High Reliability came to be, what it means to healthcare organizations, and High Reliability lessons that can be implemented in almost any line of work.

PUMPKIN RUN A SUCCESS
The 6th Annual Pumpkin Run was a success with 42 runners, 28 walkers, and 9 strollers for a total of 79 participants. Be looking for the photo album to go live online in the next two days. A BIG thank you to our sponsors; they are a primary reason our run is so successful, and we look forward to sharing the fundraising results with the Club.

PEACE BUILDERS BUILDING FRESH START KITS
Many thanks to those who have already donated items for the first 50 Fresh Start Kits. The list of items needed to complete the first kits has been updated and is noted below.

If you would like to donate items, you can bring them to the meeting on Friday, November 2 or 9; otherwise, you are welcome to drop off donated items at the Key Staffing at 5840 SW Huntoon. Need to have items together by Friday, November 9th.

Kit building will take place on Thursday, November 15 between 11am - 6 pm. Time can count towards a make-up meeting and you can come for 15 minutes or 30 minutes.

Greatest need to completed these first 50 kits is clothing and gift cards.

  • Please note these kits are for Women so women’s size items are best.
  • Gift cards can be in the range of $10 to 25 per card. Prefer they be too fast food restaurants that are open 7 days a week with longer hours – McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Hardees, Subway.
  • Items can be purchased at Dollar Tree, Dollar General, Family Dollar, etc. to help make funds stretch further. Does not have to be name brand items.
  • Toiletry items should not be travel size.
Lastly, for individuals providing $100 worth of items, Patty will donate 100 points towards your Paul Harris fellow. To ensure that you get this credit, please include a receipt or note with your name and value with your donated items.

Donate money for the purchase of items - If you prefer to donate money, members of the Peace Builder committee will shop for items not donated to complete the kits. Money can be given to Patti Mellard, Alice Weingartner or Austin Wingerson. If you write a check, please make it out to Topeka South Rotary and note on the memo line “Fresh Start Kit”.
