This Friday . .

Our speaker this Friday is Jim Peters, Director of Osher Lifelong Learning Institute an a member of Lawrence Central Rotary.  He tells the story of the underground railroad in Lawrence.

The Lane Trail, named for abolitionist James H. Lane, was established in 1856 to bypass proslavery strongholds in Missouri and provide free-state settlers a safe route into Kansas with terminus in Topeka.  The trail is approximated today by US Highway 75.  Settlers left Iowa City to go west into Nebraska and south into Kansas, but John Brown and others used the trail in reverse to transport slaves north to freedom.

Frequently, runaway slaves would hide in and around Lawrence as they waited to join a group traveling north to safety.  Gover Barn in Lawrence was a key staging area during the 1850s.  In December 1858, the barn housed slaves recruited in Missouri by John Brown as they awaited their chance to escape.

Rotary Matters
Xochimilco & Mexico City Global Grant

On November 26 a team of Rotarians from New Jersey and Kansas traveled to Mexico City to unify efforts with Chapultepec Rotary Club to support the implementation of the Xochimilco and Mexico City Global Grant.

Lenexa Rotarian and PDG Greg Peterson along with PDG Tim Datig met with Past President Lic. Oscar Rivera to coordinate the implementation of the Global Grant.

During the trip, 200 water filters were distributed in 5 different communities.  Chapultepec Rotary Club and USA Rotarians will continue the implementation of the Global Grant in 2019.

Children and families expressed deepest gratitude for the distribution of water filters.  Contaminated water is a challenge in the communities of Mexico City and Xochimilco and by distribution the water filters families will be able to improve the health condition.

Around 27 local leaders, teacher and Rotarians receive basic training in regards to the uses and maintenance of the water filters, importance of safe drinking water, hand washing and personal hygiene.

Need a Make-Up?

When a member misses a meeting, there are several ways to make up for the absence:
  • Attend a Club function -- board meeting, committee meeting, project, Youth Exchange
  • Attend a District or International function -- Rotary Youth Exchange, PETs, District Conference
  • Online make-up - Rotary eclub One - go to www.rotaryeclubone.org
  • Attend another Rotary Club meeting
    • While out-of-town for vacation or business
    • In-town around the KC area
    • Download the app "Rotary Club Locator" and find a Rotary club anywhere in the world.
Rotary International bylaws state that a member can make up for a missed meeting within two (2) weeks before or after the meeting.  if you anticipate missing a meeting, you can make up for it up to 2 weeks before that date.  If you miss a meeting, you have up to 2 weeks after the missed meeting to make up.  If a member attempts to make up at another club and that club either did not meet that week, or changed venues, the club member can let their club's secretary know the date and time of the attempted make-up and it will count as a makeup toward a missed meetings.  Send all make-ups to our club secretary, Jerry Henson via email.
