Our speaker this Friday is Brian Janes.  Brian is on the Board of Directors of Compassionate Friends.

The mission of The Compassionate Friends: When a child dies, at any age, the family suffers intense pain and may feel hopeless and isolated. The Compassionate Friends provides highly personal comfort, hope, and support to every family experiencing the death of a son or a daughter, a brother or a sister, or a grandchild, and helps others better assist the grieving family.

The Compassionate Friends was founded over 40 years ago when a chaplain at the Warwickshire Hospital in England brought together two sets of grieving parents and realized that the support they gave each other was better than anything he, as a chaplain, could ever say or provide. Meeting around a kitchen table, the Lawleys and the Hendersons were joined by a bereaved mother and the chaplain, Simon Stephens, and The Society of the Compassionate Friends was born. The Compassionate Friends jumped across the ocean and was established in the United States and incorporated in 1978 in Illinois.

Each chapter, along with the supporting National Office, is committed to helping every bereaved parent, sibling, or grandparent who may walk through our doors or contact us.

Today TCF has over 600 chapters serving all 50 states plus Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and Guam, that offer friendship, understanding, and hope to bereaved parents, siblings, grandparents, and other family members during the natural grieving process after a child has died. Around the world more than 30 countries have a Compassionate Friends presence, encircling the globe with support so desperately needed when the worst has happened.

Note from the Sergeant-At-Arms

From Sergeant-At-Arms Fred Spears:

Friday will be the LAST day to purchase Fine Cards for the 2018-2019 Rotary year.  The cost is $65 and checks should be made payable to: Lenexa Rotary Foundation, cash will also be accepted.

Lenexa Rotary Tree Planting
Last year's Rotary International President, Ian H.S. Riseley, challenged every Rotary club to make a difference by planting a tree for each of its members between the start of the Rotary year on 1 July 2017 and Earth Day on 22 April 2018. Trees remove carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the air, which slows global warming.

Lenexa Rotary accepted RI President Riseley's challenge and instead planted 50 trees in honor of Lenexa Rotary's 50th Anniversary in 2017.  Seen below is a plaque being placed at the site of the tree planting.

End Polio Now Shoes
Lenexa Rotarian, Lenet Compton, showed off her "End Polio Now" Converse shoes.  Anyone interested in purchasing these sporty shoes, please contact Lenet.  Part of the proceeds of the shoes goes to the Rotary International Polio Plus campaign.

Passing of the Gavel
Last week President Matt presented Past President Terry Tevis his official President's plaque with gavel.  Thank you Terry for leading our Club this past year!

Need a Make-Up?

When a member misses a meeting, there are several ways to make up for the absence:
  • Attend a Club function -- board meeting, committee meeting, project, Youth Exchange
  • Attend a District or International function -- Rotary Youth Exchange, PETs, District Conference
  • Online make-up - Rotary eclub One - go to www.rotaryeclubone.org
  • Attend another Rotary Club meeting
    • While out-of-town for vacation or business
    • In-town around the KC area
    • Download the app "Rotary Club Locator" and find a Rotary club anywhere in the world.
Rotary International bylaws state that a member can make up for a missed meeting within two (2) weeks before or after the meeting.  if you anticipate missing a meeting, you can make up for it up to 2 weeks before that date.  If you miss a meeting, you have up to 2 weeks after the missed meeting to make up.  If a member attempts to make up at another club and that club either did not meet that week, or changed venues, the club member can let their club's secretary know the date and time of the attempted make-up and it will count as a makeup toward a missed meetings.  Send all make-ups to our club secretary, Jerry Henson via email.
