Speaker:

Sanjay introduced Jeff Rosen, the District Attorney of Santa Clara County.

Jeff spoke about how the law reflects our values and how we treat each other.  Laws are there to protect each of us and keep us safe.  It is the goal of his office to vigorously pursue justice in a way that is fair to everyone and insure that all parties are treated with respect.  The District Attorney’s Office wants to send a strong message that if you commit a crime in Santa Clara County, you will be caught and held accountable.

Jeff described a large uptick in hate crimes against Asian people during the pandemic.  The District Attorney’s Office took an aggressive stance to hold such offenders accountable, but they also took a proactive approach to prevent these crimes through public service announcements and Town Hall events.

The District Attorney’s Office has established a unit to review previous cases to determine if there have been any wrongful convictions.  On the rare occasions that this occurs, the unit works to exonerate the person expediently.  These cases are then thoroughly reviewed to determine how they occurred and what needs to be done to make sure they do not happen again.

The District Attorney’s Office also has a Cold Case Unit which reviews serious cases that have not been solved or could not be prosecuted in the past.  The Unit has successfully investigated and prosecuted twenty unsolved homicides.

Mark your Calendars:  Next week we will be DARK to celebrate Spring Break and Easter.  We will be back at the Adobe Building on April 19th, with Peter Katz from the Mountain View Chamber of Commerce.  Our 4fer is Fred Storek.  And don’t forget to put the Club Picnic at Cuesta Park on your calendar for Sunday, April 24th!
