Meeting Notes
July 7, 2020

Hi Everyone.  Hope you are all doing okay and keeping busy.  Thank you to everyone who is sharing your stories and I hope to hear from everyone in the weeks to come.

Here’s our news for this week:

Rotary News

President Paul welcomed everyone to his first meeting as Mountain View Rotary President.  The Rotary International theme for this year is “Rotary Opens Opportunities.”  Our Club theme is “We Open Opportunities For Everyone in the Community.”  President Paul encouraged all of us to keep in touch and take care of each other.

Two visitors joined our Zoom meeting today:

Angela Siddall is a Mountain View resident who is interested in learning about the Club and possibly joining.  She has lived in Mountain View for four years and in the Bay Area since 1964.  She is a retired Family Therapist, a Mother and a Grandmother.  Welcome Angela!

Alba Levy is a member of the Saratoga Rotary Club, but lives in Mountain View, Before the pandemic, she used to flip houses, and now she is doing many things including a lot of cooking.  With most Rotary meetings now on Zoom, she likes the ability to visit other Clubs both near and far.  She hopes to get involved in some of our activities since she lives in the community.  Welcome Alba!

From Heather:  Hi fellow Rotarians.  It was great seeing so many of you today, but I do miss Phil’s song!!  I hope with your guidance and club dedication, we can fill up a speaker schedule for the year. If you have speaker ideas for the upcoming year, please sign up for a week(s) or month via this spreadsheet or contact me by email (hsten@me.com) or phone:  https://drive.google.com/file/d/1yWN7DTtzVo5i8Zk8lAeZFM8f6fZ0D5-b/view?usp=sharing.  Our next meeting, July 21st at 12:15, a dear friend and former colleague will join us, Dennis Young to share "Past, Present and Future of Los Altos Town Crier”, including owning a media business during a pandemic.  I hope you can join us.  Hugs, Heather

Alan has been communicating with Cindy Cole and Dave has had a rough time of it as of late.  He was admitted to the hospital last week and had to undergo a procedure.  We just received word that he is now back home, but pretty exhausted.  I’m sure cards or emails would be welcome.

We received a letter from the Day Worker Center thanking our Club for our grant in support of  their Women and Children’s Health Programs.

Jim Spangler handed over the reins of Endowment President to Ken Schwaderer.  He thanked Jack Wong whose management of the fund has grown it to $194,000.  We thank Jim for his outstanding leadership of the Endowment for many years and wish Ken well in his new role.

President Paul introduced his new Board for the coming year and asked that they share their plans for the year:

Past President Tom:  Tom said he will support Paul as much as he can and add jokes as appropriate.

President Elect Heather:  Excited about amazing speakers for our Zoom meetings.  With more flexibility using Zoom, we envision speakers from near and far and a variety of topics.

Secretary Bruce:  We will keep the Mingle going until our meetings resume and bulletins will follow our meetings.

Twana:  Twana is a Board Member at large and will support President Paul however she can.

Scott:  Congratulations to Tom for a great year and looking forward to supporting Paul to do great thing here and around the world.  Scott mentioned that he will be having shoulder replacement surgery and hopes to follow Bert’s lead with a speedy recovery.  At Villa Siena, there are still no COVID cases with the residents and they are now starting new admissions in July.

Treasurer Fred, Membership Chair Jerylann and Board Member Cathy were not present.

There will be a Board Meeting via Zoom on August 13th, with details of the meeting to be provided.

If anyone knows of any of our members in distress or that need anything, please let President Tom or one of the Board Members know.  We want to make sure everyone knows that we are here to take care of each other.

Personal News

This is an opportunity for us to share whatever information we would like so we can keep up with what everyone is doing these days.

Jim Cunningham:  All is good and still playing tennis three days a week.

Bruce:  Up at Tahoe with his Sons and three Grandsons for the last week.  Lots of fun and very loud!

Walt:  Playing a lot of golf and I think I heard him say he had an ace.  We should have been there for the round of drinks!  Patricia is recovering from a broken pelvis and she is back to walking a mile a day.  All is good.

Bert:  Things are good.  He is serving on the Santa Clara County Civil Grand Jury along with Walt and their term has just been extended to the end of the year.  Anne and he are still in lock down in their retirement community, but there are no COVID cases there.  Their house is ready for rental and they have been enjoying some online music sessions with their fellow musicians.

Roger:  He continues to work at home is is getting a bit bored.  No travel in his immediate future, but he is cooking a lot and playing golf once a week.

Anita:  All is good and she is grateful for what she has and focusing on what is good in her life.  And part of that is the great meals that Mitch has been cooking.

Alan:  Things are good and business has been interesting.  He has been keeping in touch with Cindy to provide updates on Dave for the Club.

Sanjay:  Working from home has been relaxing, but he misses being in the office.  He doesn’t anticipate getting back to the office until August at the soonest and then it will likely be some kind of alternating schedule.  For the School Board, with the recent increase in cases locally, it is doubtful that students will be able to return to school and distance learning will take place until it is safe for students to return.  Sanjay is enjoying gardening and time with his family.  He also met with Scott and former Mountain View Rotarian Dick Lubeman for coffee which was a nice break.  Sanjay wanted to remind everyone that Hopes Corner is still operating for folks in need in the community.

Mandy:  Everyone is healthy and she spent some time in Napa last week wearing her mask and practicing social distancing.  She is now looking to hire an assistant and working more hours than she anticipated.

Jim Spangler:  Business is steady and they are still taking care of families, although sometimes in different ways.  Jim’s Mom and Dad are celebrating their sixty-fifth wedding anniversary with a small dinner with their children and spouses.  Jane and Jim celebrated the 4th of July with family at their new home in Pismo Beach.

Ken:  Just build a turtle enclosure over the weekend for one of his Grandchildren.  His family is safe and healthy and his office is open and going good.

Hal:  Going for walks with his dog Cody and doing exercises with his physical therapist.  Has shopping help from his Sons and neighbors.

Judy:  She arranged for her hairdresser to cut her hair in her backyard along with two of her friends.  She joins Tom when he goes to physical therapy and has her temperature taken each time.  And they have twice a week BYOE (Bring Your Own Everything) parties in their backyard.

Jack:  Very busy with work, tech support at home, being an algebra teacher for his twelve year old daughter, handyman work around the house with questionable caulking success, and helping out at his Parents’ house during a surprise visit.  Work wise, it’s been one of the most successful years in his twenty-seven year career.  And he wanted to let everyone know that Hamilton is now available through Amazon Prime or Disney Plus.

Paul:  He and Susan are keeping busy taking care of their Granddaughter three days a week.

Other Stuff

No Retro Photos this Week, but I’m still hopeful that some brave members will send me an older or interesting photo to add to this section next week.

Remember, send me some stuff so we can make this interesting and keep it going. And don’t forget the photos. Send it to bbarsi@msn.com.  And take good care of yourselves.
