SPEAKER:
Cathy introduced our speaker, Dr. Melissa Kaszubski, PAMF Audiologist, to discuss how our hearing changes as we age.

There are many physical parts to the ear that allow us to hear and there are many factors that may contribute to hearing loss.

An audiogram is used to measure hearing in each of our ears.  The different levels of hearing are:  1) normal; 2) mild loss; 3) moderate loss; 4) severe loss; 5) profound loss.  The three types of hearing loss are:  1) conductive – this is not nerve related and can be medically treated such as an ear infection; 2) sensorineural – this is nerve related, usually permanent and can be corrected with hearing aids; 3) mixed – combination of conductive and sensorineural.  Most people with hearing loss have a deficiency with higher pitches of sound.  Hearing loss is the third most common age related medical issue that people experience.  Most hearing loss is not medically treatable and if it is, an audiologist is required to refer the patient to a medical doctor.  For those who experience tinnitus, that ailment comes from the brain and not the ears.  Untreated hearing loss leads to further health problems including social, cognitive and emotional issues.

Hearing aids slow or stop the progression of hearing loss.  They are not corrective devices, they are aids.  There is not one best hearing aid and a device that works well for one person, may not work as well for another person.  There are two types of hearing aids: 1) hearing aid placed in the ear – usually for more mild hearing loss; 2) hearing aid placed behind the ear – usually for more moderate to severe hearing loss.

Mark your Calendars:  Our Next Meeting will be on August 16th at Don Giovanni’s.  Board Meeting starts at 11 am.
