President’s Greeting:

President Scott Johnson welcomed us.  The Rotary International theme for this year is “Rotary: Making a Difference.” The Mountain View Rotary Club theme is “Mountain View Rotary: Having Fun Making a Difference.”

Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all.

Thought for the Day: Tom Myers, who read Emma Lazarus' poem "The New Colossus" which is enshrined at the base of The Statue of Liberty.

Song of the Day: Songmaster Phil Armi, who lead us in a rendition of "God Bless America."

Meet & Greet

Introduction of Visiting Rotarians & Guests: Bert Raphael.  Tom Myers introduced Haruhito Ema, visiting from Iwata, Japan.  Mr. Ema brought greetings from the Iwata Rotary Club President Ken Fukunaga.  He was accompanied by his son and his son's friend, both of whom were Sister City exchange students.

 

Vocational Minute/Spotlight: Dick Lubman, who introduced Twana KarneyTwana talked about her career, going from Chemical Engineer to working in the nonprofit sector.

Club Announcements:

· Thanks to Tom for being the “4’fer” today! (greeter, thought, dessert & meeting notes)

· Twana & Alan … update on “An American in Paris” outing on October 7.

· Reminder to the Board: there is no Board Meeting in August.

· President’s Club: Recognition of new members (present certificates). Thanks to all! We are presently up to 9 members for a total of $1,350.

 

· Auction: We will be doing auctions again this year to raise funds for our Endowment Fund, so please see President Scott if you have anything to donate. Following up from last year, we are hoping to have a rug from the Rug Center.

Other Announcements:

· Rotary Youth Exchange District Interviews for the future class of 2018-19 will be held on Sunday, Nov. 5th, 9:30 a.m., Bruno’s BBQ, Scotts Valley. (per district newsletter)

· District Membership Seminar planned for Saturday, August 19th, 9 a.m. to noon, at Castlewood Country Club in Pleasanton. Flyer available.

· “Save the Date” for the District 5170 Rotary Avenues of Service meeting, Thursday, Oct 5th, 5-9 p.m., Santa Clara Biltmore Hotel, Santa Clara. Flyer available.

Twana Karney introduced Tony, who told us about the history of the Chamber, the changes that have happened in the 18 months he has been CEO, and his vision of the Chamber's future.
