Meetings Notes -- January 18, 2022

President’s Greeting by Heather:  Good Afternoon & welcome to the Rotary Club of Mountain View!

Thought for the Day: Regarding Martin Luther King Jr. and in honor of the celebration of his birthday, the thought of the day was as follows: MLK Jr.’s daughter mentioned this weekend on her social media: “he was a man before he was a martyr….” This phrase shows the personal loss and points to the concept that all humans have a role to play in service and civil rights. Nellie shared a quote emphasizing the importance of education and character.

Guest Speakers: Heather introduced Raeena Lari, Raeena is Commissioner on the County of Santa Clara Health Advisory Commission, providing recommendations to the County Board of Supervisors, and serves on Adhoc Committees for Chronic Diseases and Infectious Diseases. She initiated a campaign for the County Board of Supervisors Commendation recognizing Lyme Disease Awareness in Santa Clara County, and advocated with US Senate and Congress members to support the TICK Act that funds research for the diagnosis and cure of Lyme.
Raeena joins us today as Lyme disease is the most common and the fastest-growing vector-borne disease in the country, and constitutes a significant public health threat.  She presented a comprehensive presentation on Lyme disease. She explained the history as well as important information about this disease. Lyme Disease transmitted via ticks has long-term consequences and is not always understood by the public. If a tick bites you, she recommends having the tick tested. The Bay Area Lyme Foundation will provide free tick testing if you have had a tick and are concerned it may be a carrier of Lyme Disease. It often (but not always) begins with a rash.
The rash is not always easy to see and often goes unnoticed. Lyme disease is often misdiagnosed and has a variety of symptoms. This misdiagnosis can delay diagnosis causing a more widespread impact. Early diagnosis is critical to a proper recovery. Lyme Disease is treated with antibody treatments. While this is effective, some continue to exhibit symptoms despite antibody treatment.
Major lingering issues include fatigue, joint pain, sleep disturbances. Our speaker shared preventative measures, how to remove a tick, and the need to invest more money into researching this disease. She also shared that children are the most often impacted and are at significant risk for Lyme Disease. She encouraged all of us to join the effort to build awareness on the topic and advocate for increased funding to address the disease. Raeena Lari answered member questions at the end of her presentation.

Mark your Calendars: Happy Hour at 4pm on January 25th at Pacific Catch, 545 San Antonio Rd. Next club meeting is via ZOOM on February 1, at 12:15 pm Crabfeed memories and reminisce with guest speaker, Alan Goodman, and Tom Myers is our 3fer!

Serve to Change Lives! The meeting is adjourned.
