President Paul welcomed everyone to today’s Mountain View Rotary Meeting.  The Rotary International theme for this year is “Rotary Opens Opportunities.”  Our Club theme is “We Open Opportunities For Everyone in the Community.”

Mandy is our Rotary Foundation Chair and the goal for the Club is to have 100% participation in this year’s contributions to the Foundation although we are not quite there yet.  If you have not yet donated, please make your contribution of any amount as soon as possible so we can reach our goal.  You can send your donation for The Rotary Foundation to Mandy Andrei at 2934 Vivian Lane, San Jose, CA 95124.  If you prefer, you can also make your donation to The Rotary Foundation on line at https://my.rotary.org/en/donate.   If you make an on line donation, please send a message to Mandy to let her know.  Feel free to give Mandy a call if you have any questions at 650-281-4356 or email her at mandyandrei@gmail.com.

For anyone who would like to join the President’s Club, please make your checks out for $150 to the Mountain View Rotary Club and send them to Mountain View Rotary President’s Club, PO Box 390280, Mountain View, California 94041.

Club Members donated more than $13,000 for our community grants which have been awarded.  The grant recipients will be speaking at our June 1st meeting.  The raffle to stay at Tori’s property in Half Moon Bay will be held in the next week or so.

Heather and Anita are working on a Kick Out Celebration for Presidents Paul and Tom with a tentative date of June 22nd in the evening.  They are considering a modified Rotating Dinner with Zoom Kick Out for all to enjoy.

The Memorial Celebration for Dave Cole will be on Saturday, May 22nd, at 11:00 am, at Spangler’s Sunnyvale Chapel, 174 N. Sunnyvale Avenue.  There is parking in the back of the Chapel and at a park nearby.  Plan to arrive a few minutes early and all guests are asked to wear a facemask.  Attire will be casual in keeping with Dave’s style.  The Cole Family will be hosting a lunch at Dave and Cindy’s home following the service.  It will also be live streamed for those who are not able to attend.  Please email Jim Spangler for the link.

The Cole Family has suggested that any donations in Dave’s honor be made to the Mountain View Rotary Club. Donations may be made by check, credit card or Paypal. Please make checks payable to: "Rotary Club of Mountain View LEF" and mail to the following address: Rotary Club of Mountain View, PO Box 390280, Mountain View, CA 94039. If anyone knows of any of our members in distress or that need anything, please let President Paul or one of the Board Members know.  We want to make sure everyone knows that we are here to take care of each other.

Program

Heather introduced today’s speaker, Renee Zimmerman, who is the Executive Director of the Silicon Valley YMCA which includes the Mountain View YMCA.  Renee is also a member of the Los Altos Rotary Club.

Prior to COVID, some of the programs the Mountain View YMCA was featuring included:
-A youth swim safety partnership with Mountain View Police targeting kids most at risk
-For teens, there was a youth government program and working with AVID students
-For military families at Moffett Field, there was a Dance For All program

Other programs included:
-Health Transition – cardiac and pulmonary rehab
-Live Strong Living Well – cancer survivors
-Parkinson’s Exercise Program
-Diabetes Prevention Program

When COVID hit, after March 17, 2020, the YMCA ceased all operations and most employees were furloughed.  Members were asked to continue paying monthly dues which were treated as donations.  Funds raised were used to help the furloughed staff.  And the YMCA began providing emergency child care for health care workers at El Camino Hospital.

From April to May, 2020, the YMCA participated in the City of Mountain View’s Resiliency Task Force.  The YMCA also expanded its emergency child care to all affected hospital workers.

From June to August, 2020, the YMCA put several programs in place:
-Modified day camp for children of essential workers
-Summer food program serving more than 1,000 meals
-Virtual programs
-Outreach to isolated seniors
-Outdoor pool reopened
-Outdoor fitness area was established

From September, 2020, to April, 2021, the YMCA assisted seven school districts with distance learning and worked through multiple pivots with allowable fitness activities.

Moving forward, the YMCA will strive to provide:
-Support for families including child care and distance learning
-Continue to offer outdoor and virtual options for fitness and other activities
-Members in this area have been much slower to return than in other parts of the country

For summer, 2021, day camps are nearly full, swim lessons are full, returning to youth sports, more members are returning, and the YMCA is anxiously awaiting the big reveal from the state on June 15th and what it will allow.

Next Meeting
