President’s Inaugural Remarks:
Sanjay began with thanks to his wife Dipti and friend Dick Lubman for attending today’s meeting as well as to Heather for her guidance over the past year. He also acknowledged honorary member/past president Monique Kane as well as all past presidents for their leadership.
Sanjay would like to focus this year on engagement. Hybrid meetings will continue but he hopes that members will be able to join in person as much as possible. He is planning to meet with each member for coffee to hear everyone’s thoughts. Some suggestions so far are to have more service projects, which Cathy is working on, and more social events which Fred is in charge of. In addition to the crab feed, a second fundraiser is being planned. It will be a poker tournament in October/November and we will possibly be partnering with the Public Safety Foundation. He is also looking at a fundraiser similar to the Bear project in Los Altos but perhaps a Dog project for Mountain View where individuals/organizations can purchase dog statues around town and decorate them.
Sanjay then shared how he became a Rotarian. About ten years ago, he shared with a friend that he was looking for something to fill a void in his life. The friend happened to be a Rotarian from Fremont and suggested Sanjay join Rotary too. He quickly came to see how Rotary is not just a club but a family. He joined the Youth Committee and recently, his son attended RYLA which was life changing for him. Sanjay has been active at Hope’s Corner which is near and dear to his heart. He thanked Rotarian Judy Hannemann for encouraging him to run for the High School Board, and to Paul for being his campaign treasurer.
Sanjay also shared some thoughts from his attendance at the President’s Training Seminar. The International President Jennifer Jones spoke on the theme “Imagine Rotary, Imagine One’s Dream.” She is focusing on diversity. It was on 5/5/1987 when the Supreme Court ruled that women could join Rotary Clubs. The goal now is to have 30% of all club members be women by 2023. So far 110 countries have achieved that goal. Mountain View is at 43% women. Jennifer Jones’ brother is an artist and designed a scarf that will be sold as a fundraiser. He shared the list of Rotary’s major causes and the various Action Groups as well as his eight points on Imagine Rotary.
