Meeting Notes by Bert - September 19, 2017

                                                              
President Scott rang the bell, and welcomed us to the club. He announced that there had been a scheduling mix-up and our speaker would need to leave by 1pm—so we will perform our normal weekly activities mostly in reverse order!  
 
We did the
Pledge of Allegiance and then immediately invited Tori up to introduce the speaker.
 
Tori introduced Barbara Dehn, a well-known Nurse Practitioner who has worked extensively with FAME, the Foundation for African Medicine and Education, in Tanzania. Barbara gave a fascinating presentation on “the Miracle of Mistakes”, and how poor African folks struggle to be helped with modern medical technology. After the talk, Monique came up to award cupcakes to Tori, Bert, Paul, and Scott, for their recent Rotary Foundation donations. We hope every Rotarian will make a donation to the Foundation, in any amount, each Rotary year. Donation made within the next couple of weeks will make the donor eligible for a drawing prize from the District.
 
We then stood to let Songmaster Phil lead us in singing “Oh! What a Beautiful Morning”, followed by a two-minute “meet and greet” period.
 
Then Bert came up to introduce visitors. We had one visitor, Linda Wang who might be a candidate to be a future member. Tom introduced Gunther again, but since Gunther is an Honorary Member he no longer needs to be introduced as a visitor. Twana introduced visiting Rotarian Anitha Shah, president of the Rotary Club of Bangalore (India), and we exchanged banners with her.
 
Then Bert, as his Thought for the Day, repeated some comments by various personalities about the game of Football.
 
Announcements:
  • Thanks to Bert for being the “4’fer” today! (greeter, thought, meeting notes, and his wife’s brownies for dessert)
  • “An American In Paris” Theater Social, October 7th – update by Twana: Dinner reservations after the show are still up in the air since the restaurant we had selected isn’t sure it will be open.
  • Mtn View Art & Wine Festival service project – Volunteer Appreciation Party, Shoreline Amphitheater, Wed, 9/20, 5-7 p.m. All those who volunteered are invited.
  • Hurricane Harvey Relief Effort?  -  no info yet on what Rotary will do… take the option of doing this on your own.
Silicon Valley Community Foundation has Harvey Relief & Irma Relief funds
  • President’s Club: Thanks to all!   We are presently up to 18 members.
  • Next Board Mtg: Thursday, Sep. 21st, 5:15 p.m. at Villa Sienna.
  • District 5170 Rotary Avenues of Service meeting, Thursday, Oct 5th, 5-9 p.m., Santa Clara Biltmore Hotel, Santa Clara.  Members are encouraged to attend.
  • Dick is away at a celebration of the 70th anniversary of the U.S. Air Force.
  • Thanks to Jim Cochran and Paul for maintaining our club Facebook presence and website. All members are encouraged to be a Facebook Friend of the club.
  • CSMA will be taking sign-ups for volunteer ushers very soon.
  • RI Toronto Convention Hotel room reservations – due by Sep. 29th.   That convention is June 23-27, 2018.
  • Next week no meeting; we will have a social hosted by Tom and Hart at their facility, from 5 to 7pm. The following week, Oct. 3, we will have a Club Assembly (instead of a speaker).
  • Tom announced that Maureen Wadiak, the long-time “neck” of CSA, is retiring soon.
  • Alan wished everyone a Happy [Jewish] New Year!
