Meeting Notes
October 6, 2020

Here’s our news for this week:

Rotary News

President Paul welcomed everyone to today’s Mountain View Rotary Meeting.  The Rotary International theme for this year is “Rotary Opens Opportunities.”  Our Club theme is “We Open Opportunities For Everyone in the Community.”

Paul thanked Mandy Andrei for taking over as Foundation Chair for this year.

Heather introduced guest Carol Olsen who works with the Mentor Tutor Connection Group in Mountain View. Carol stressed the need for volunteers interested in tutoring students K-8th grade, or mentoring high school students who are facing a variety of social and/or academic challenges. Volunteers would meet with the students via zoom or possibly mask-to-mask in a local park or open space if they are comfortable doing so. If you or someone you know is interested, a new volunteer training session is taking place on October 14 at 10:00 am via zoom. Volunteering will only require a couple of hours per week. More information is found at: www.mentortutorconnection.org/events .

Heather then introduced Mandy, who thanked long time Club Foundation chair, Monica Kane for her help in transitioning to her new duties as chair. To date, nine members have contributed a total of $2100 to the Club Foundation. Mandy noted that the goal every year is 100% participation by Club members. Donations can be made on-line or make your check out to “The Rotary Foundation” and send to Mandy Andrei, 2934 Vivian Lane, San Jose, CA 95124.

To kick off our fundraising efforts, Heather then introduced our speaker, Orrin Mahoney, our District International Rotary Foundation Chair.  Orrin noted the Rotary Foundation is the 501c3 or charitable arm of Rotary International. Its mission is to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education and the alleviation of poverty.
Orrin’s presentation included an overview of the types of focus areas and examples of programs Rotary International has supported around the globe. This year the Environment was added as a new focus area. He also described various recognition awards and raffles with prizes to local Rotary Chapters for their fundraising efforts. Examples include the annual TRF raffle with a Global Grant awarded as a prize to the lucky Rotary Club that met their fundraising goal. In addition, an individual’s annual $1000/year pledge to the Foundation will qualify them for membership into the Paul Harris Society, or one can bequeath a minimum of $10,000 to the Foundation in their will and be recognized by membership in the Paul Harris Bequest Society.  The Rotary Foundation also provides Global Grant Scholarships offering up to $30,000/year to qualified students.

Paul thanked Orrin Mahoney for his excellent presentation.

Paul then welcomed Bruce Barsi as the newest member of Mountain View Rotary’s President’s Club! The President’s Club honors local member donations of $150. Of that donation $100 goes to the Club Endowment Fund and $50 to the Club Account.  For those who would like to join, please make your checks out to the Mountain View Rotary Club and send them to Mountain View Rotary President’s Club, PO Box 390280, Mountain View, California 94041.
