SPEAKER INTRO:  Dick Lubman introduced speaker John McAllister, Mayor of Mountain View,

The Honorable John McAlister presented a very informative 65 year history on the progress and changes in the city.

John grew up in Mountain View. He is a Los Altos Rotarian and a professional CPA. He was elected to the MV City Council in 2012. He has personally been part of many of these changes. And since he has been Mayor, he has realized that Mountain View is a premier respected city both state wide and nationally.

Since 1950, Mountain View has experienced steady growth with foresight by our city leaders. In 1950, Mountain View was an orchard community with El Camino Real as the main road to San Francisco Airport and a population of 6,563. In 1960, Lockheed came to town, El Camino Hospital and Mayfield Mall were built and the population grew to 30,000.

In 1970, North Bayshore was developed and a company Arrow Development, a designer of Disney Land rides, added more jobs. Our past President and District Governor Walter Schultz was a principal executive in Arrow Development. In addition Old Mill Mall and the 12 story 400 Castro Street building were raised. The population was 51,000. During the 80’s, The new City Hall was constructed, the down town renovation project unveiled and Shoreline Amphitheater was opened. In 1990, we experienced the tech boom and the light rail was completed. The population was 67,000.

In 2000, Mountain View became the center of high tech as Google moved into North Bayshore including taking over the ALZA and SGI properties. In 2010 a general plan public conference which included MV Rotarians as business representatives, proposed policy on housing, transportation and environmental sustainability. The population was 78,000.

Mayor McAllister challenged us as citizens and small business leaders to become and stay involved in the evolving plan for growth and development. Among the issues are protecting small business, minimum wage, transportation including BART, property costs use planning. A quiet voice goes unheard.

Thank you to Mayor John McAllister for a most informative and motivating presentation.

Respectfully submitted,

KNS
