Meeting Notes
June 1, 2021
President Paul welcomed everyone to today’s Mountain View Rotary Meeting. The Rotary International theme for this year is “Rotary Opens Opportunities.” Our Club theme is “We Open Opportunities For Everyone in the Community.”
Mandy is our Rotary Foundation Chair and the goal for the Club is to have 100% participation in this year’s contributions to the Foundation although we are not quite there yet. If you have not yet donated, please make your contribution of any amount as soon as possible and no later than the end of June so we can reach our goal. You can send your donation for The Rotary Foundation to Mandy Andrei at 2934 Vivian Lane, San Jose, CA 95124. If you prefer, you can also make your donation to The Rotary Foundation on line at https://my.rotary.org/en/donate. If you make an on line donation, please send a message to Mandy to let her know. The Mountain View Rotary Endowment Board is still seeking one member to fill an open position starting in June. Please contact Ken Schwaderer is you are interested in serving.
Heather and Anita are working on a Kick Out Celebration for Presidents Paul and Tom on the evening of June 22nd. The event will be a modified Rotating Dinner with Zoom Kick Out for all to enjoy. They still need volunteers to host for the outside dinners. Contact Heather is you are willing to host.
The Memorial Celebration for Dave Cole took place on Saturday, May 22nd, and if you were not able to attend, the video link is still available at https://viewlogies.net/spangler/cSTCj1mSR and the PIN is 714315.

Jim Cunningham visited Ernie at his new place and thought it was very nice and quite easy to get to.
If anyone knows of any of our members in distress or that need anything, please let President Paul or one of the Board Members know. We want to make sure everyone knows that we are here to take care of each other.
Program
Anita introduced all of the representatives of the organizations receiving grants from our Club this year.
Carol Olson spoke about the Mentor Tutor Connection. They are celebrating twenty-five years of helping students meet their potential and thrive. They provide tutoring for elementary and middle school students and mentoring for high school students in Mountain View and Los Altos. And they successfully met the challenge presented by the pandemic and helped more students than ever during the last year.
Joy Garza spoke about the Mountain View Public Safety Foundation Police Activities League (PAL) grant. The grant will support many of PAL’s activities including the Boxing Program, Mentoring, Net Gain, Field Trips, and Sponsorships for activities for kids who can’t otherwise afford them. During the pandemic, Officers were able to maintain contact with the kids through phone calls, Zoom meetings, and home visits. PAL helps build trust between the police and community. Joy introduce Amber Wilson who is the new Executive Director of MVPSF starting this week.
Christine Salinas spoke about LifeMoves in Mountain View. LifeMoves is the largest provider assisting the homeless population in Silicon Valley. Their newest shelter just opened in Mountain View. It is located on Leghorn near Costco and can accommodate 124 clients. When it reaches capacity, it will cut homelessness fifty percent in Mountain View. The grant funds will be used to purchase books for the children in the program.
Bruce McFarlane spoke about the MVLA Scholars Program. The program has five steps. First, mentors help students with the college applications process. Twenty-five to thirty students are awarded scholarships each year which are renewable as long as they progress successfully. Mentors work with the scholars throughout their time in college. The Career Launch Team helps scholars get internships and jobs. During the pandemic, students were challenged to develop their own self-study internships. And there is a big celebration for all the college graduates in the program. The grant funds will be used to help fund supplemental unpaid internships for scholars.
Lois Bridges spoke about the Bring Me A Book program. Their focus is on helping overcome book scarcity. Children are matched with books according to their interests. They provide book access in the home, schools, and public libraries. They also work with homeless shelters, Boys and Girls Clubs, and Children’s Hospitals.
