Meeting Notes
December 3, 2019
                                                              
President Tom Myers rang the bell and called the meeting to order with the Mountain View Rotary mantra, ““Rotary Connects the World”. Our Mountain View Rotary Club theme is “We Connect Our Community.”
 
Dave Cole lead the club in the pledge of allegence.
 
Jason Commerford shared a quote from Abraham Lincoln “When I do good, I feel good. When I do bad, I feel bad.”
 
Vocational talk was given by Paul Reinhart, who joined the Marine Corps shortly after high school. He subsequently went to UC Davis for his undergraduate degree after which time he began working in the accounting industry and obtained his CPA license. He then transitioned into working with companies doing software and system implementaions.
 
 
General Club Announcements:
 
  • Dave Cole updated us about the following Community Projects:
    • CSMA Concert this coming Saturday, December 7th.  Cathy & Bert will be working.
    • There is a new sign up sheet circulating for future events at CSMA.
 
  • Jim Spangler spoke about his trip to New York
     
  • Fred contributed to the endownment and spoke of the current local college football rivalries.
     
    Other Club Announcements:
     
  • Mat Caparas tribute dinner will be held on Satureday December 28, 2019.
 
  • Cathy gave her Red Badge talk where she described how she grew up in upstate New York. She obtained a degree in Parks and Recreations which was what ultimately brought her to the area when she took up a position in Sunnyvale’s parks and recreation department. She has been a avid volunteer throughout her life as a volunteer with Vista and that passion for giving back to the community is what brough her to Rotary after seeing the notice on Next Door.
 
  • Foundation update was provided by Monique who reminded us we are shooting for 100% participation club.
 
  • President Tom reminded us that we have our regularly scheduled club meeting December 10, 2019 and on December 17, 2019 we will have our holiday dinner event at Don Giovanni’s restaurant (further details to be provided by Paul in the coming days).
 
  • A reminder was had that the crab feed will be held again on February 1st, 2019.
 
  • Birthday wishes were give to Judy and the club also sang her happy birthday.
 
 
SPEAKER: 
 
 
Sally Perham Chavez a visiting rotarian introduced our speaker Carol Olson who spoke about the Mentor Tutor Connection.
 
Carol has 20 plus years of experience working with and helping to grow non-profit organizations and is currently the Executive Director for Mentor Tutor Connection. The organization helps to serve youth throughout all schools in the Mountain View and Los Altos schools who have either been identified as in need of assistance or are at risk of falling behind in their studies. At the elementary and middle school level, Carol stated the the program focuses on assisting teachers with students they have identified in need of assistance through tutoring assistance while at the high school level, the program encourages a mentoring based program.
 
Carol also noed that several of our members either are active members of tutor connection like Paul Reinheart or prior members such as Judy.
 
Next Week our meeting is on Tuesday, December 10th.
