Mountain View Rotary Club – Club Meeting

Meeting Notes – March 20, 2018 by Bruce          
                                              
President Scott welcomed all to the meeting and reminded the club of Rotary’s themes: Our Rotary International theme for this year is “Rotary: Making a Difference.”   Our District Governor Orrin Mahoney’s theme is “Developing Lifelong Friendships, While Making a Difference.”  Our Mountain View Rotary Club is “Having Fun Making a Difference.”  
 
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Tori Atwell and Phil led the club in a belated Saint Patrick’s Day tribute of “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling.”.  
 
Bruce Barsi offered the thought for the day with quotes about persistence and never quitting.  
 
Introduction of Visiting Rotarians & Guests was done by Bert.  Honorary Members Thomas Dittler and Gunther Wobser joined us today.

    • Thanks to Jim Cochran and Anita Grossman for volunteering at CSMA event
    • Next CSMA event is April 21st and Judy Hannemann is signed up to help
    • There will be a tree planting event at Crittenden Middle School on May 5th
 
  • Club Service  -- Twana and Tori
    • Club Social Pizza Party at Bruce and Suzanne’s house next Tuesday, March 27th, starting at 6:00 pm.  Contact Bruce if you haven’t already signed up.
    • Rotating Dinner is on Saturday, April 28thAnita is coordinating the event and there is a signup sheet being circulated.
    • The Kickout is on Friday, June 22nd, at Michaels at Shoreline.  Jerylann is coordinating the event.
 
  • President’s Club:   Thanks to all!  We are presently up to 25 members for a total of $3,750.
  • CHAC Breakfast on Thursday, March 28th.  Go to www.chacmv.org for tickets.     
  • CSA Empty Bowls Soup Supper, Sunday, April 15th  --  card at table
  • Next Board Mtg:  Thursday, March 22nd, 5 p.m., at Villa Siena
  • District Training on April 14th in the morning in Saratoga.  Signup sheet being circulated.  Contact Bert for more information.      
  • Envelope being circulated for Polio Campaign’s final push.  Please contribute what you can. 
  • Alan Goodman invited everyone to a performance of his band this coming Saturday night starting around 7:30 pm at the Wine Tasting business in Downtown Los Altos.
 
Rene Zimmerman from the El Camino YMCA was our speaker today and she was introduced by Jim Cunningham.  Renee is currently a member of the Los Altos Rotary Club; she is a past president of the Peninsula Sunrise Rotary in Redwood City and is a Paul Harris fellow.  She received her BA from SFSU and a Masters degree from the London School of Economics.  She has 26 years of non-profit experience and has been the Executive Director of the El Camino YMCA since January 2016.
 
 
Ms. Zimmerman told us about several of the programs sponsored by our local YMCA including:
            Afterschool activities and childcare at eight of our local schools
            Preschool at two local schools
Summer camps and water safety instruction with scholarships available
Several teen programs including Youth in Government and College Tours
Alta Vista Opportunity program
Reaching out to military personnel at Moffett Field
