MEETING August 20, 2021
ATTENDEES:  15 of 26, 58% of membership, 5 virtual
 
 
President-Elect Richard Amato called the meeting to order at Norma's Cafe while President Mike Castro is on vacation.  The prayer was offered by Sharon Lewis and Acting Secretary Neal Norton led the Pledge of Allegiance.  No guests were present.  Rich called for Brag Bucks  and the Pig was well-fed.  Committee reports were provided, Sharon Lewis will have some flyers or brochures next week for Membership,  Richard Biggers reported that we will have a Flag Restoration Day on Saturday, August 21 at 9 AM.  Should not be many flags to repair and it should go quick.  Shep Stahel reported that Love Where You Live has no takers yet for Projects, George Elking discussed the upcoming blood drives and we need volunteers to both donate and work the drives.   Program Chair Greg Rushin reported on the next several speakers.  
 
Our program is a Rotarian in the Plano Rotary Club, Sara Akers, and Sergeant-at-Arms Doug Cargo personally covered her fine for not wearing her Rotary pin.  
Sara Akers is the Vice President of Community Outreach for the North Texas Performing Arts (NTPA).  

Sara received her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts from Southern Methodist University with a major in Dance and a minor in Theatre. Sara continued her education at the University of Texas at Austin where she received her Masters of Fine Arts in Children’s Theatre and Creative Drama.

During her time at UT Austin, Sara received the Aurand Harris Playwriting Award and taught on the UT Austin faculty for two years. In 1981, Sara began teaching Creative Drama and Movement at The Lamplighter School in Dallas, where she taught for 9 years. During this time, she also taught and directed at Dallas Theatre Center, Children’s Arts and Ideas Foundation, and the Junior Players Guild. Sara created the Imagination Company underneath the umbrella of the Junior Players Guild.

In 1991, Sara founded Plano Children’s Theatre, and has watched the company grow from a small theatre in Plano to a family of theatres covering the North Dallas area. Sara now works as the organization’s Vice President of Community Outreach and is responsible for North Texas Performing Art’s Diversity and Inclusion Program, member development, and other special projects.

Sara also works with the Plano Repertory Theater that has the adult-based show Cabaret coming up.  Tickets can be purchased online at NTPAREP.org. Showtimes are:

1)  Rotary Club of Plano Sunrise - If you are mailing your dues payment, please send it to:   PO Box 861165  -  Plano, Texas 75086-1165   If you are paying with check, or at a club meeting, please only pay $170.  If by Credit Card, $175.  Check your email for an invoice that was sent to you on April 1, 2021 at  8:39 AM which has a link to pay online.
2)   Plano Sunrise Rotary has provided a total of $138,500 since 2000 to the Rotary Foundation and since July 1, 2020 to March 2021, our club has donated a little over $ 4,000.
3)   Plano Balloon Festival has been CANCELLED for 2021.

Over the last 20 years, our club has donated over $133,000 to the Rotary Foundation. Over the same period, the club has inducted 72 Paul Harris Fellows.
