Attendance today was 20 of 26, or 77 percent.

Today's meeting is likely one of the last in our Virtual Meeting series.  Neal is working to restart in-person meetings soon at Norma's.  We had 20 members present, with two guests: Alex Fuller and our club's Assistant Governor, George Elwell.

Our speaker today was Plano Deputy City Manager Greg Rushin.  Greg provided a synopsis of the civil unrest related to the death of George Floyd.  Greg began his discussion by stating that his email volume has significantly grown during the course of the current unrest.  In responding to resident emails, Greg emphasizes the training that members of the Department receive.  He also emphasized the multiple layers of accountability to proactively identify problem areas and issues before they manifest in a public setting.  Greg stated that the Department receives up to five racial profiling complaints per year (normally between zero and five complaints).  He mentioned the "Campaign Zero" effort to reduce officer involved shootings nationwide.  The roots / sponsorship of this effort are unclear.  Greg further discussed his service on the Executive Board of the IACP (International Association of Chiefs of Police) during the aftermath of Ferguson, Missouri.  He served on the Board with the Commissioner of Police for Philadelphia.  The Police Commissioner was a Co-Chair of a Task Force commissioned by President Obama to study and report on the events surrounding the Police Response to Ferguson.  The panel provided 57 recommendations related to improving preventative and response measures.  Greg also discussed the role of the federal government in identifying problem Police Departments.  In his closing comments, Greg stated that the Plano Police Department will continue to engage residents of Plano on police-related matters.

The meeting adjourned shortly thereafter.

The motto of Rotary is "Service Above Self." We all know from experience how much more we can accomplish together than alone. Along those lines, it is imperative that we actively promote our club and invite friends and coworkers to join.
