This Week’s Program: Judge Lund – Drug Court

                           Week of January 23, 2023

Notes from Friday’s meeting:
With Marcia Yost presiding, she also led our singing of the National Anthem along with “The Happy Wanderer” and “Smile.”  Don Phillips offered the opening prayer.
Angie McKee was present to introduce visiting Rotarians and guests, but there were none.  Lynda Olinski served as our Zoom moderator.
Marcia noted that the District Rotary celebration will take place on April 22 this year in Plymouth, IN.  The celebration will occur at the Christos Banquet Center.  Please calendar that date for future reservation.
In addition to having Bryan Barahona present, Marcia Yost reintroduced Julia Jun as our second Goshen College International Scholarship recipient.  Julia had been chosen last semester but was later required to delay that until this semester due to a class conflict.  Be sure to introduce yourselves to and welcome our Goshen College scholarship recipients.
Sean McCrindle introduced our program provided by Rebecca Shetler Fast.  Rebecca is in her first year as the CEO of Child and Parent Services (CAPS).  Rebecca grew up in Canada, but as a result of having family in the Goshen area, she went to Goshen College.  She began as a theater major but then changed to majoring in social services as a result of her SST program in Ethiopia where she learned the plight of and provided services to orphans.  After graduation, she served as a social worker providing trauma clinician services to children and veterans.  Seeking programs for prevention more than remediation, she provided social services for Haitian operations for five years.  She returned to the Elkhart County area just before the pandemic when she began working for The Source.  She was then selected to lead CAPS just a few months ago.
CAPS has a mission of not only responding to children in need of services but also seeking prevention.  Rebecca indicated that is where her heart especially lies.  CAPS provides case management services for children and parents by providing connections to jobs, mental health services, housing, and training.  In responding to children in need of services, CAPS also provides a friendly interview program and the CASA program in order to try to break the cycle of abuse.  CAPS currently has a staff of approximately 65 plus approximately 60 volunteers.  Eighty to 85% of funding comes from grants with the remainder coming from fundraising.  If you are interested in volunteering with CAPS, please be in touch with Rebecca Shetler Fast.  Thank you to Sean McCrindle and Rebecca Shetler Fast for the update on Elkhart County CAPS.
