Two New Members Introduced
Rotarians Kathy Friend and Randy Roberts introduced two new Rotarians at our last meeting.
First up was new member Debra Faye Williams Robbins. Faye has been an educator since 1979, when she began teaching at Arlington Elementary. After stints as a principal and an Area Administrator for North Side and South Side areas, where she was in charge of all the feeder schools, she became the Chief of Student, Family and Community Engagement which is designed to support new and current families and to connect them with resources in the community. She also holds a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree and is working toward a doctorate in Education Administration.
Our second new member is Chris Angellatta. Chris is a former 11-year Rotarian from the Gahanna Club in Columbus, Ohio. In a career spanning 25 years at the YMCA, he currently serves as the Chief Operating Officer at the YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne. Chris earned his B.S. in Education and an M.A. in Public Policy and Management, and is pursuing his PhD in Global Leadership.

President-elect (2019-20) and today’s Sergeant Holli Seabury pulled off a good one at today’s meeting by announcing that the venue for the 2020 International Conference, which was scheduled to be held in Honolulu, Hawaii, had suffered extensive fire damage and the conference had been moved to Dayton, Ohio. She even had a mock screen shot of the International Conference website announcing the change. This came as unhappy news to President-nominee (2020-21) Jeff Peat, who had really been looking forward to the trip to Hawaii during his presidential year, especially in light of the fact that the last time Jeff served as a Rotary Club president, the international conference was in Chicago—a fact, which, we have on good authority he “bitched and moaned about.” Once the hoax was revealed, Holli assured everyone it was all in good fun. To which Jeff replied, “I love you too, Holli, but, remember, payback is hell.” We’re all looking forward to being there when Holli gets punked.Paul Harris Fellows Presented
Foundation Chair and President-Nominee presented two Paul Harris Fellows at today’s meeting.
The first went to Mark Westerhausen , who is a Paul Harris +5.
The second awardee was Ron Verlee, a Paul Harris +6. The Paul Harris Fellow program recognizes individuals who contribute, or who have contributions made in their name, of $1,000 to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.
Annual Celebration Dinner
The Annual Celebration Dinner will take place on June 20th at Baker Street Station (221 W Baker Street), with the social hour starting at 6pm and dinner at 6:45pm. This year's theme is “All Aboard the Service Above Self Express" and we will be having a fun night of (virtual) train travel through the service we have done this past year! Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA)
RYLA co-chairs Chris Bien and Parry Leavell presented completion certificates for their participation in RYLA camp. Participants at RYLA camp are chosen for their leadership potential and are sponsored by the Club. These certificates were presented to Jazzmyne Swenson, Ivan Rascon (not present), and our own inbound Rotary exchange student Ema Skolnickova.

Terri Theisen, Urban Agriculture Educator for Purdue Extension – Allen County spoke to our Club today about the Johnnie Mae Farm, an urban farm in southeast Fort Wayne. Terri started her presentation by giving us a quick overview of the neighborhood where the Johnnie Mae Farm is located. The population is young (median age is 22), largely African-American, and low-income with an average per capita income of less than $10,000 annually and per household income of less than $20,000. The majority of the households are composed of a single parent with one or more children, and no access to a personal vehicle. The nearest grocery store is 3.1 miles away—a three hour round trip using available public transportation. As a result, this neighborhood has very little access to fresh produce. The Johnnie Mae Farm was implemented to address that lack of access.The farm is a partnership between the City of Fort Wayne’s Office of Housing & Neighborhood Services, the Purdue Extension - Allen County, Vincent Village, Community Harvest Food Bank, the Renaissance Pointe YMCA, and the Renaissance Pointe Neighborhood Association. It is run mostly by volunteers and, at the moment, the biggest need is for a full-time Farm Manager to oversee the entire operation.
Throughout the 2018 season, staff and volunteers harvested more than 3,500 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables, which were available to local residents at low cost. At the end of the growing season, neighborhood residents are invited to harvest everything in the gardens and each receives a free bag of healthy produce. At the end of the 2018, 250 people showed up for this Harvest Celebration.

On June 17 and 24 we need volunteers to take photos at our meetings and run the Powerpoint Programs. The usual guy who does this will be on vacation. He will continue to do the Spin, update our Website, and do the next PowerPoint programs from afar, unless someone wants to volunteer for these areas! So many choices! Take photos! Members from Rotary Clubs in India visited District 6540 during the last couple of weeks. These Rotarians were present for our District Conference May 10-11. They also visited several Rotary Clubs in our district and learned much about Northeast Indiana. Above, the Rotarians from India traded Rotary flags with our Club.
